Fiji’s main island, where all the international flights arrive and depart, is called Viti Levu, it’s the location of the nations capital Suva, which is situated on the eastern side of the island and connected by a five hour coastal highway drive or a 30 minute shuttle flight from Nadi. Although an interesting town to visit we would not recommend it for those clients looking for a relaxing holiday in the sun. Fiji’s other main town, and the location for the main international airport, is Nadi, which is located on the West Coast of Viti Levu close to all the main vacationing areas. Fiji’s tropical climate varies very little throughout the year ranging between 74 and 80˚F with year round cooling sea breezes. The rainy season is in their summer, which is October through March, with the greater chance of heavier rainfalls from mid January to March, however you would be very unlucky to experience a period of extended rain even during the rainy season.

Authors: Karen Bernard (United Nations Development Programme, UNDP) and Samantha Cook (Secretariat of the Pacific Community, SPC) Abstract One of the factors which increases the vulnerability of SIDS is their limited economic diversification. Many SIDS countries rely heavily on the tourism industry as a key source of national income and employment, as they have a comparative advantage in this sector due to luxurious sandy beaches and picturesque coastlines. However, this reliance on tourism creates pressure to offer investors concessions and incentives to undertake construction projects which may exacerbate the risk exposure of the local population. One case in which this dynamic can be seen is the development of the Denarau island tourist area in Fiji. With a typical SIDS economic structure, Fiji has identified tourism a priority industry for expansion, and it constitutes 5 percent of GDP. As part of the expansion drive in this sector to generate additional foreign exchange and other economic benefits, Denarau was designed and built as a tourist enclave located on the western coast of Fiji’s main island, strategically located near the country’s international airport.
