Weston, CT Phoenix Mt. Lakes, NJ Vancouver Toronto Fiji is emerging as the hot spot in the Pacific. Tourist arrivals are booming and many resorts are reaching full capacity. The introduction of low cost airlines, coupled with the appeal of Fiji as both a safe haven and one of the few remaining unspoiled tourist destinations is driving demand. Developers and investors appear enthusiastic about market prospects. This enthusiasm is also being stimulated by the Fiji Government, which is offering generous financial and tax incentives to encourage new development. Situated in the heart of the South Pacific, the Republic of Fiji comprises 333 islands. Sunny, unique and friendly, the Fiji Islands are one thousand miles of pristine white sand beaches, fabulous coral gardens and azure lagoons. Fiji enjoys a tropical maritime climate, without undue extremes of humidity and temperature. The population of Fiji is approximately 832,000 people, most of whom live on the two main islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu and comprise a combination of native Fijians (53%), Indians (40%) and a balance of other races. In 1970 Fiji was granted independence and became a self-governing nation within the Commonwealth, after 96 years of British rule.

&HER ISLANDS Lau Group G Vanua Levu G Mamanuca Islands Ta ve uni G Viti Levu G Yasawa Islands WITH Transpacific Holidays &HER ISLANDS The Pacific Relaxing Experience The island nation of Fiji lies in the western Pacific Ocean, and covers an area of 18000 square kilometres. With such a large area you will never have a feeling of being crowded. It is a 3.45 hours flight from Sydney or an 11.30 hour flight from Los Angeles. The country is made up of over 300 individual islands, of which approximately forty have accommodation available for visitors to stay at. Fiji’s main island, where all the international flights arrive and depart, is called Viti Levu, it’s the location of the nations capital Suva, which is situated on the eastern side of the island and connected by a five hour coastal highway drive or a 30 minute shuttle flight from Nadi. Although an interesting town to visit we would not recommend it for those clients looking for a relaxing holiday in the sun. Fiji’s other main town, and the location for the main international airport, is Nadi, which is located on the West Coast of Viti Levu close to all the main vacationing areas. Fiji’s tropical climate varies very little throughout the year ranging between 74 and 80˚F with year round cooling sea breezes. The rainy season is in their summer, which is October through March, with the greater chance of heavier rainfalls from mid January to March, however you would be very unlucky to experience a period of extended rain even during the rainy season.

  • Illustrative Case Study on Denarau Island Resort in Fiji Karen Bernard
Background Paper prepared for the Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction 2013 Tourism Investment Choices and Flood Risk: illustrative case study on Denarau Island Resort in Fiji Karen Bernard United Nations Development Programme and Samantha Cook Secretariat of the Pacific Community Geneva, Switzerland, 2013 1 Tourism Investment Choices and Flood Risk: illustrative case study on Denarau Island Resort in Fiji GAR 2013 ISSUE #2: How do investment decisions in the private sector (in a context of incentives and regulation by the public sector) increase levels of disaster risk and, in some cases, transfer risk from private investors to governments and to other sectors of society? Authors: Karen Bernard (United Nations Development Programme, UNDP) and Samantha Cook (Secretariat of the Pacific Community, SPC) Abstract One of the factors which increases the vulnerability of SIDS is their limited economic diversification. Many SIDS countries rely heavily on the tourism industry as a key source of national income and employment, as they have a comparative advantage in this sector due to luxurious sandy beaches and picturesque coastlines. However, this reliance on tourism creates pressure to offer investors concessions and incentives to undertake construction projects which may exacerbate the risk exposure of the local population. One case in which this dynamic can be seen is the development of the Denarau island tourist area in Fiji. With a typical SIDS economic structure, Fiji has identified tourism a priority industry for expansion, and it constitutes 5 percent of GDP. As part of the expansion drive in this sector to generate additional foreign exchange and other economic benefits, Denarau was designed and built as a tourist enclave located on the western coast of Fiji’s main island, strategically located near the country’s international airport.
