Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis studies sailors who worked onboard British and North American slave ships between 1750 and 1808. Its starting point is the discrepancy between maritime historiography and that of the slave trade: in the former seamen appear as radical, anti-authoritarian figures who were far more accepting of black men and women than other occupational groups in this era. In slave trade literature, by contrast, sailors appear as shadowy figures ready to do the captain’s bidding, which generally meant abusing, maltreating and assaulting men and women of African origin. Through detailed analysis of the lives and working conditions of those who were lowly employees in the slave trade, it is possible to see that the much-vaunted radicalism of seamen as a group grew at least in part from their work onboard ‘guinea ships’. Freedom and fair payment for labour were hardly unconnected to slavery and the slave trade, and sailors who were involved in the delivery of slaves to the Americas had ample occasion to compare their own situation with that of slaves. It was this which, to some extent, led to their famous politicised protests for freedom and better pay around the Atlantic rim. In addition the slave trade brought European seamen into contact with people of African origin on a large scale. Sailors on slave ships worked alongside free Africans and Afro-Caribbeans at all points of their journey, and often had men of African origin as colleagues even during the middle passage. While seamen were certainly the perpetrators of many of the middle passage’s atrocities, racial constructs and interracial interaction were vastly more complex during a slaving voyage than is often accepted. Indeed, the middle passage—the voyage from Africa to the Americas—is often used to symbolise the shared pain of all those who have suffered and do suffer as the result of racism.^ Although academic scholarship, concerned with historical data rather than heritage, and facts rather than symbolism, remains somewhat alien to this public image of the slave trade, nevertheless works that gaze out from Africa into diaspora, or conversely look east over the ocean from the Americas identifying African roots, partially address this search for answers and meaning. Another strand of historiography surrounding the slave trade is perforce even further removed from the wider perception of the slave trade, being the study of profit and loss, numbers and figures, accounts and economics. Philip Curtin’s 1969 The Atlantic Slave Trade: A Census, the first monograph to seriously attempt to calculate the number of Africans who were traded across the Atlantic Ocean, is a work historians relied upon, with modifications, until the release of The Trans-Atlantic ' W.E.B. Du Bois, quoted in Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker, The Many-Headed Hydra: Sailors. Slaves. Commoners and the Hidden History of the Revolutionary Atlantic (Boston: Beacon Press, 2000)152. ^ (New York: Farrar, 1990) 149. ^ I accept that the term ‘middle passage’ is unacceptable in many ways, and to many people, because of its Eurocentrism. Nevertheless, as to the majority of seamen of many nationalities the voyage was a ‘triangular’ affair, o f which the middle, transatlantic section was the most feared, I have used it in this work. Slave Trade: A Database on CD-ROM in 1999/ Others have been concerned not so much with the number of Africans bought and sold, but the profits garnered by slaving merchants/ Without such facts and figures this history would be without an anchor, to use a suitable maritime metaphor. Despite this rich and diverse historiography, and to some extent because of the gap between public perception and academic study, a large group of people involved in the trade is hidden from view, appearing as ‘bit part’ players if they emerge on stage at all. Bridging that gap, the starting point of this work is neither the merchants’ economics nor the slaves’ suffering, but the men who were paid employees on slave ships, the irrepressible Jack and his brother tars. There were approximately 330,000 seamen involved in Britain’s slave trade during 1680-1780, but they are infrequently mentioned in slave trade studies, and analysed even less.^ The implication of sailors being mentioned so seldom and their separate perspective rarely being acknowledged is that lowly tars appear passively complicit figures in the travesty wrought by slaving merchants. When a slave trade sailor appears in the literature, it is commonly with cat-o’-nine-tails or branding iron in hand, firing fiercely on rebel slaves, or mercilessly raping a captive African woman. This image of them is not incorrect; certainly seamen were responsible for many of the individual travesties of the trade. All these aspects of a slave ship sailor’s multipart character and behaviour are examined in detail in chapter five. Where this representation falls short is not that it wrongly ascribes brutality to seamen—that they were often cruel is beyond doubt—but that it tacitly suggests that they were consciously occupied in the production of one of the most repellent racial injustices the world has known. Along with the American or Caribbean slaveowner wielding his whip, a sailor standing over a captive African with a branding iron is part of our collective imagery not just of almost indescribable inhumanity, but racial hatred on a scale, in terms of longevity at least, virtually unsurpassed. ^ (Madison, WI: University of Wisconsin Press, 1969); David Eltis, Stephen D. Engerman, “The Importance o f Slavery and the Slave Trade to Industrializing Britain” Journal o f Economic History 60:1 (2000) 123-144. A major problem with this supposition is that it is thoroughly in contradiction to the way seamen as a group in this time period are represented in the separate historiography of sailors in all trades, and in the profession in general. Jeffrey Bolster’s Black Jacks argues that white sailors in the eighteenth century Atlantic were more accepting of blacks as colleagues than their landlubber peers, often working alongside them as equals. Furthermore he argues that they “empathized with the plight of blacks” in general.^ Julius S. Scott has argued that in the Caribbean, sailors and slaves often found “common cause”. He posits slave trade seamen, furthermore, as major purveyors of information about the French Revolution and British abolitionism to West Indian enslaved field hands.® In fact, the shared history of seamen and slaves, as Scott suggests, is in turn part of a much bigger history, that of the radical Atlantic. For example, sailors and slaves famously fought side by side during the opening frays of the American Revolution. The rebels who stormed Newgate gaol in London in 1780 consisted of both sailors and freed slaves working together. All around the Atlantic in this era sailors and (former) slaves were a visible and vocal element of the rebellious mobs that so terrified the established authorities.^ In its widest implication, therefore, the picture of seamen revealed in these radical histories not only challenges the racial arguments of slave trade history, but also the economics embedded therein.

Existing historiography is fragmentary and incomplete. Memoirs suffer from limited points of view and personal biases. No academic study has examined the Filipino resistance with a critical and interdisciplinary approach. No comprehensive narrative has yet captured the fighting by 260,000 guerrillas in 277 units across the archipelago. This dissertation begins with the political, economic, social and cultural history of Philippine guerrilla warfare. The diverse Islands connected only through kinship networks. The Americans reluctantly held the Islands against rising Japanese imperial interests and Filipino desires for independence and social justice. World War II revealed the inadequacy of MacArthur’s plans to defend the Islands. The General tepidly prepared for guerrilla operations while Filipinos spontaneously rose in armed resistance. After his departure, the chaotic mix of guerrilla groups were left on their own to battle the Japanese and each other. While guerrilla leaders vied for local power, several obtained radios to contact MacArthur and his headquarters sent submarine-delivered agents with supplies and radios that tie these groups into a united framework. MacArthur’s promise to return kept the resistance alive and dependent on the United States. The repercussions for social revolution would be fatal but the Filipinos’ shared sacrifice revitalized national consciousness and created a sense of deserved nationhood. The guerrillas played a key role in enabling MacArthur’s return.

Newton, though not representative of every abolitionist, was a vital figure in the abolitionist movement. His influence on Hannah More and William Wilberforce along with his contributions to the Parliamentary hearings made him a key aspect of its success. How he came to fulfill that role was a long and complex journey, both in terms of his religion and his understanding of slavery. He began his life under the spiritual direction of his pious, Dissenting mother, became an atheist by nineteen, and then an influential, evangelical minister in the Church of England in his later adulthood. In the midst of that journey, Newton was impressed, joined the crew of a slave ship, was himself enslaved, became a slave ship captain, and then, eventually, a fervent abolitionist. Though he was influenced by any people and ideas, his development of an evangelical Calvinistic theology seems to have driven him to ultimately condemn the slave trade.

    ‘A Man of Courage and Activity’: Thomas Tew and Pirate Settlements of the Indo - Atlantic Trade World, 1645 -1730 1 Kevin McDonald Department of History University of California, Santa Cruz “The sea is everything it is said to be: it provides unity, transport , the means of exchange and intercourse, if man is prepared to make an effort and pay a price.” – Fernand Braudel In the summer of 1694, Thomas Tew, an infamous Anglo -American pirate, was observed riding comfortably in the open coach of New York’s only six -horse carriage with Benjamin Fletcher, the colonel -governor of the colony. 2 Throughout the far -flung English empire, especially during the seventeenth century, associations between colonial administrators and pirates were de rig ueur, and in this regard , New York was similar to many of her sister colonies. In the developing Atlantic world, pirates were often commissioned as privateers and functioned both as a first line of defense against seaborne attack from imperial foes and as essential economic contributors in the oft -depressed colonies. In the latter half of the seventeenth century, moreover, colonial pirates and privateers became important transcultural brokers in the Indian Ocean region, spanning the globe to form an Indo-Atlantic trade network be tween North America and Madagascar.     William Wilberforce: Triumph Over Britain’s Slave Trade Abigail Rahn Senior Division Historical Paper Words: 2499 Rahn 1 History has shown that the road to societal change is often paved with hardship and sorrow. The fight to end the British slave trade was a poignant example of the struggles to reach that change. The British slave trade thrived for over two centuries and was responsible for transporting 3.4 million slaves, mainly to Spanish, Portuguese, and British colonies.1 This horrific institution was permeated with misery, corruption, and cruelty. The conditions on the ships were abhorrent. The male captives were shackled together below deck, unable to move, and forced to lie in their own filth.2 The women were allowed some mobility and stayed on deck but were exposed to sexual harassment.3 Yet the appalling trade was “as accepted as birth and marriage and death.”4 It was not until William Wilberforce decided to combat slavery within Parliament that slaves had true hope of freedom. William Wilberforce’s campaign against the British slave trade, beginning in 1789, was a seemingly-endless battle against the trade’s relentless supporters. His faith propelled him through many personal tragedies for nearly two decades before he finally triumphed over the horrific trade. Because of Wilberforce’s faith-fueled determination, the slave trade was eradicated in the most powerful empire in the world. After the trade was abolished, Wilberforce fought for emancipation of all slaves in the British empire. He died just days after the House of Commons passed the act to free all slaves, an act that owed its existence to Wilberforce’s relentless fight against the slave trade.5 1Clarkson, Thomas.

In doing so, I examine piracy and illicit activities such as smuggling and shipwrecking through a new lens. They act as a form of economic engagement that could not only be used by empires and colonies as tools of competitive international trade, but also as activities that served to fuel the developing Caribbean-Atlantic economy, in many ways allowing the plantation economy of several Caribbean-Atlantic islands to flourish. Ultimately, in places like Jamaica and Barbados, the success of the plantation economy would eventually displace the opportunistic market of piracy and related activities. Plantations rarely eradicated these economies of opportunity, though, as these islands still served as important commercial hubs: ports loaded, unloaded, and repaired ships, taverns attracted a variety of visitors, and shipwrecking became a regulated form of employment. In places like Tortuga and the Bahamas where agricultural production was not as successful, illicit activities managed to maintain a foothold much longer.

It is divided into three sections. The first, Policies, presents a new interpretation of the political framework underwhich slave-trade suppression was executed. Section II, Practices, examines details of the work of the navy’s West African Squadronwhich have been passed over in earlier narrativeaccounts. Section III, Representations, provides the first sustained discussion of the squadron’s wider, cultural significance, and its role in the shaping of geographical knowledge of West Africa.One of our objectives in looking across these three areas—a view from shore to ship and back again--is to understand better how they overlap. Removal of that canvas from Rhode Island to the Midwest was a source of regret to some and perhaps relief to other citizens, for artist John Greenwood had captured for posterity a memorable bacchanalia of Rhode Islanders who — by the long arm of coincidence — found themselves in port in the Dutch colony of Surinam sometime during the late 1750s. Most participants in that gala would later hold prominent positions in the civil and military history of His Majesty's colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and during the American Revolution. Identification of the revelers is part of the tradition of the Jenckeses, a family distinguished in the life of Rhode Island for generations. Until its sale to the City Art Museum, that picture had always been in the possession of John Jenckes' descendents, who sold it with great reluctance. Aside from its value as a work of art, associational interest makes Sea Captain Carousing in Surinam a provocative study. It is the purpose of this paper to examine if it were possible or probable that all or some Newport and Providence merchants and mariners, traditionally identified, could have been in Surinam at the time Greenwood depicted them in such Hogarthian attitudes.

From the time of their arrival in Rhode Island's waters in February, the Gaspee and her commander, Lieutenant William Dudingston, had been the cause of much commercial frustration of local merchants. Dudingston was insolent, described by one local newspaper as more imperious and haughty than the Grand Turk himself. Past accounts of his pettish nature followed him from port to port.[1] The lieutenant was also shrewd. Aware that owners of seized vessels — rather than navy captains deputized in the customs service — would triumph in any cause brought before Rhode Island's vice-admiralty court, Dudingston had favored the district vice-admiralty court at Boston instead, an option available to customs officials since 1768.[2] Aside from threatening property of Rhode Islanders through possible condemnation of seizures, utilization of the court at Boston invigorated opposition to trials out of the vicinage, a grievance which had irritated merchants within the colony for some time.[3] Finally the lieutenant was zealous — determined to be a conscientious customs officer even if it meant threatening Rhode Island's flourishing illicit trade in non-British, West-Indian molasses. Governor Joseph Wanton of Rhode Island observed that Dudingston also hounded little packet boats as they plied their way between Newport and Providence.
