Media support for the 13/14 Jazz Series provided by WRTI and City Paper. 10 | ABOUT THE ARTISTS Gary Burton (Vibraphone) Born in 1943 and raised in Indiana, Gary Burton taught himself to play the vibraphone. At the age of 17, Burton made his recording debut in Nashville with guitarists Hank Garland and Chet Atkins. Two years later, Burton left his studies at Berklee College of Music to join George Shearing and Stan Getz, with whom he worked from 1964 to 1966. As a member of Getz's quartet, Burton won Down Beat Magazine's “Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition” award in 1965. By the time he left Getz to form his own quartet in 1967, Burton had recorded three solo albums. Borrowing rhythms and sonorities from rock music, while maintaining jazz's emphasis on improvisation and harmonic complexity, Burton's first quartet attracted large audiences from both sides of the jazz-rock spectrum. Such albums as Duster and Lofty Fake Anagram established Burton and his band as progenitors of the jazz fusion phenomenon.

This summer’s stellar lineup features a must-see mix of the finest jazz artists in the world, performing in the intimate and easily accessible South Bay setting of the Stanford University campus.   • Julian Lage Arclight
    JULIAN LAGE ARCLIGHT Arclight, Julian Lage’s Mack Avenue debut, marks his first recorded outing on electric guitar and in a trio format, backed by double bassist Scott Colley and drummer Kenny Wollesen. Like that titular intense white light, Lage is a performer who burns brightly: The pace he sets is brisk, the mood often upbeat, the playing so quick-witted and offhandedly dazzling that one is compelled to immediately press “repeat,” especially when tracks like “Persian Rug” and “Activate” whiz by in under two and a half minutes. For a thoughtful artist like Lage, who will research and ruminate on a project long before he sets foot in a studio, this was a liberating experience, plugging in and playing with a kind of abandon. He was encouraged along the way by his producer and friend, the eclectic singer-songwriter Jesse Harris, who helped maintain an air of spontaneity and discovery throughout the trio’s three-day stint at Brooklyn Recording. Lage has long been heralded for his virtuosic ability as an acoustic guitarist. In fact, he was well known in musician circles as a guitar prodigy whose early genius was captured in a 1997 Oscar-nominated documentary short, Jules At Eight. As an adult, he’s fulfilled the promise of his extraordinary youthful talent. The New Yorker’s Alec Wilkinson declared, “He is in the highest category of improvising musicians, those who can enact thoughts and impulses as they receive them.” Nate Chinen of The New York Times called Lage “one of jazz’s breezier virtuosos, possessed of an unflappable technical facility and a seemingly boundless curiosity.” After independently releasing a solo acoustic set of largely original material called World’s Fair in 2014, that curiosity prompted Lage to reconsider the electric guitar— specifically a Fender Telecaster, “the most refined embodiment of the modern guitar,” as he puts it.

    THE GARY BURTON QUARTET Ein ziemlich populärer Satz der letzten Jahre lautete „mit 60 beginnt das Leben“. Gary Burton allerdings hat, wie schon so oft in seiner Karriere, dem Buch zum Lebensabend gleich noch ein Kapitel hinzu gefügt. Im Januar feierte er seinen 71. Geburtstag - ein Alter, das die meisten Künstler schon mit der Rückschau auf ihr Schaffen verbringen. Burton hingegen schaute in die Zukunft und festigte zugleich mit seinem letzten Album „Guided Tour“ die Reputation seiner neuen, großen Band, des New Gary Burton Quartet. Über das was war hat er dann lieber ein Buch geschrieben: Im September 2013 erschien mit „Learning To Listen“ seine Autobiographie. Als Executive Vice President des renommierten Berklee College of Music sah man ihn drei Jahrzehnte lang als Jazz-Erzieher, während parallel dazu seine Karriere als Performer und Recording Artist auch nicht eben in ruhigen Bahnen verlief. Berühmt für die Wiederentdeckung und Verfeinerung der Vier-Klöppel-Technik am Vibraphon, gelang ihm zudem die Erschaffung seines eigenen, ganz unverkennbaren Sounds. Nebenher etablierte der Amerikaner an seinem College die ersten Onlinekurse auf der Plattform Coursera, der bereits zwei Monate vor ihrem offiziellen Start 25.000 Studenten angehörten. Auf „Guided Tour“ nun bewies der innovativste Vibraphonist des Jazz, das sein New Gary Burton Quartett kein Zirkuspferd ist, das nur einen Trick beherrscht. Mit dem überreich talentierten Gitarren-Genius Julian Lage und den zwei Veteranen Scott Colley am Bass und Antonio Sanchez an den Drums, ist „Guided Tour“ so etwas wie ein musikalisches Ausrufezeichen einer der dynamischsten Bands auf der Szene dieser Tage. Und selbst, wenn er jetzt in veränderter Besetzung auf Tour geht: Den Spirit seines neuen Quartetts wird Gary Burton deshalb nicht zuhause lassen.

    05/21/13 Mark Egan/Karl Latham/John Hart Unit 1 Wavetone Records By Mike Joyce Not that fans who’ve been following bassist Mark Egan’s long and remarkable career need reminding, but this leaderless ensemble’s recording debut is yet another illustration of just how well versed he is in the art of the electric trio. While flashes of similarities to Egan’s work in like settings are inevitable, the performances captured on Unit 1 swiftly reveal a distinctive brand of jazz-funk propulsion and interplay, a match of wits featuring drummer Karl Latham and guitarist John Hart in equally prominent roles. Several jazz and pop standards, including tunes by Thelonious Monk, Ann Ronell, Wayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins, provide grist for the trio’s willfully out-of-kilter mill. It’s a power-trio-generator, all right, but what often stands out amid the 16th-note rhythms, spiky harmonies and syncopated drive is a keen sense of dynamics, especially when the focus shifts to Hart’s feather-light phrasing, Latham’s deft brushwork and Egan’s fretless bass finesse. Although improvisation is the album’s primary thrust, with most of the tracks running between six and nine minutes, melodies linger and charm during “Old Folks,” “Willow Weep for Me” and “My One and Only Love.” What’s more, Hart’s sheer soulfulness and unmistakable blues affinity subtly complement Egan’s rippling undercurrents and Latham’s deep grooves. Well worth the wait, Unit 1 was recorded five years ago at the club Bula in Newton, N.J. Here’s hoping Egan, Latham and Hart offer an update soon—in or out of the studio.
