We appreciate the opportunity to present to you the proposed changes to the toll and fare structures. For the last several years, we have committed to cost-savings measures that have enabled us to operate without changes to our toll or fare structures. However, we now face a very challenging time as our future needs will require us to find additional revenue sources to fund our Capital Program which is critical to maintaining the safety, security and serviceability of our assets. We are confident that with the feedback received from you, our customers, we will be able to propose a plan to our Board of Commissioners that will enable us to face the challenges that lie ahead. Matheussen Chief Executive Officer, Delaware River Port Authority President, Port Authority Transit Corporation The Delaware River Port Authority The Delaware River Port Authority of Pennsylvania and New Jersey is a regional transportation agency. DRPA’s lines of business, collectively called “the Authority,” operate under the motto “We Keep the Region Moving.” DRPA traces its roots back to 1919 when leaders from the two states began planning for a bridge across the Delaware River. That bridge, now known as the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, was once the longest suspension bridge in the world. Today, more than 80 years after its opening, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge remains a key transportation artery and a regional landmark. -

Battery Lewis and the Navesink Military Reservation at Hartshorne Woods Park – Monmouth County Park System Information Sheet on Restoration & Interpretation Key to Defense of America’s Greatest Harbor With the looming threat of war in the late 1930s, the United States initiated a program to modernize and expand coastal defenses along the eastern and western seaboards. The Hartshorne property in the Navesink Highlands was deemed a desirable site due to its high elevation and location at the southern entrance to the New York harbor. In 1942 the US Government purchased 224 acres, and between 1942 and 1944 the Army constructed the Navesink Military Reservation as part of the Harbor Defenses of New York, headquartered at Fort Hancock on Sandy Hook. The objectives of the Harbor Defenses of New York were to deny enemy ships access to New York Bay, and to furnish heavy artillery support for defense against landings. Two batteries were constructed at the Navesink Military Reservation during World War II. Battery Lewis, the larger of the two, is a 600 foot long casemated battery, consisting of two 16 inch caliber gun emplacements connected by a corridor housing ammunition storage and power rooms. Battery Lewis is the only 16 inch gun battery in the State of New Jersey. Constructed of steel and thick reinforced concrete and covered with earth, and built upon the prototype developed by the Army for all 16 inch gun batteries, Battery Lewis was designed to withstand battleship and aerial attack. Two 16 inch Navy Mk11 M1 guns on M4 Army barbette carriages were mounted in Battery Lewis in May 1943. -

One op- eration after another, beginning with the Marshalls and running straight through the first air strikes on Tokyo, the big battleship has gone about the business of leveling Jap shore instal- lations and protecting carrier forces in the proverbial "one hand tied be- hind the back" fashion. Attacking Jap planes take one look at the dread- nought's gun-studded decks. That's usually enough. The one-time fast carrier task force flagship is potential enemy destruction, and no one is more aware of it than the Japs. Edgewater, Colorado 2 The Jerseyman Looking Back… August 1, 1945 (Ship’s Archives) During the 1968/1969 Vietnam tour of USS New Jersey, crewman Bob Foster found this unsigned poem stuffed inside a crack between a shelf and the wall of his locker in “M” Division. Dated August 1, 1945, he found the poem during a review of his navy souvenirs and donated it to the ship’s archives. -

NEW JERSEY ... “TYPHOON COBRA,” DECEMBER 18, 1944 - Thousands of US sailors serving aboard the 130 plus ships of Task Force 38, rode out a terrible storm on December 18, 1944, and it is sadly remembered today as “Typhoon Cobra.” This storm resulted in 3 capsized destroyers, the loss of 790 men, the total destruction of 146 badly needed combat aircraft, and brought crippling dam- age to many ships. Especially hard hit were the CVL’s (Light Aircraft Carriers,) and CVE’s (Escort Carriers.) At the time, USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62) was serving as fleet flagship for Task Force 38, and was under the command of Admiral William “Bull” Halsey. Today, as The Jerseyman commemorates this tragic World War 2 event, we are privileged to include stories of the storm as it was experienced by many of the sailors who were there. During our typhoon research, we were also fortunate to have had contact with Mr. Richard A. Strand, brother of lost USS SPENCE crewman Robert L. Strand. Mr. Strand has compiled an extensive amount of material about his brother’s ship. He graciously shared this information with The Jerseyman, and for many years, has offered his efforts at no cost, to the families of USS SPENCE crewmen. Along with the USS SPENCE’s history, his research contains many operating charts for the ship, and an excerpt from the Presidential Unit Citation (PUC), that USS SPENCE had received as part of Arleigh Burke’s famous “Little Beaver” Destroyer Squadron (DesRon) 23. -

Our veterans have honorably served and sacrificed throughout the world when our nation called, and many have paid the ultimate sacrifice. It is with eternal gratitude that we take the time to honor the memory of our fallen while bringing alongside and thanking those heroes still among us. Our veterans are woven into the fabric of our great nation we call America. Veterans like those who served in the Pacific during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, during WWII, the Korean War, and… these warriors exemplified the meanings of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Today‘s Veterans, you, lend the character and the core values you developed while in uniform to the communities in which you live and work. We should take advantage of every chance we have to learn from and thank you for your devout patriotism. Service to our nation has bound us together and we must continue to draw on our veterans‘ experiences and value their dedication to our country and our way of life. This communication will strengthen and forge the future for our next generation of warriors and veterans. It is an honor for me to talk to and to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have gone before us and laid the foundation on which our service members today build their legacy. -

Three sailors were actually standing watch at the bow in this photo - as mine lookouts. We had just run into a series of big swells of which this was one of the largest. Only by the grace of God, they survived by wrapping themselves around the twin pedestals of the 20MM guns that were there at the time. Those guns, and the two ready service ammunition boxes helped prevent them from being swept away. They were badly bruised, and nearly drowned from being under water for so long. One of them had a broken collar bone. After they were rescued, they were sent below to sickbay and the seas finally calmed. COMPREHENSIVE ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT for the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 2018 The USS New Jersey (BB-62) (“Big J” or “Black Dragon”[5]) is an Iowa-class battleship. The USS New Jersey earned more battle stars for combat actions than the other four completed Iowa-class battleships. The USS New Jersey was decommissioned for the last time in 1991 (after serving a total of 21 years in the active fleet), having earned a Navy-Unit Commendation for service in Vietnam and 19 battle and campaign stars for combat operations during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Lebanese Civil War, and service in the Persian Gulf. The ship was donated to the Home Port Alliance in Camden, New Jersey, and began its career as a museum ship on October 15 2001. These investments will greatly contribute to the building of the Camden County Link Trail which will benefit the City of Camden and the surrounding area in multiple ways. The Camden County Link Trail is an ambitious 34-mile trail project that will connect the urban core and scenic waterfront of the City of Camden to 16 of the county’s suburban communities, while linking to countless businesses, schools, neighborhoods, parks, and open spaces. When fully constructed, it will allow hundreds of thousands of county residents to walk, hike, or bike to recreational areas, commute to work or school, and stimulate local economies at multiple downtown business districts. It is my understanding that with this funding residents and commuters will be able to safely navigate the beautiful Delaware River and Cooper River waterfront, while avoiding high traffic areas such as Routes 30, 130, and 676.
