LUIS ESTEBAN MARCOS Presidente de la Cámara Oficial de Comercio, Industria y Navegación de Alicante 5 corregido OK ingles.qxd 26/6/01 19:20 Página 6 6 corregido OK ingles.qxd 26/6/01 19:20 Página 7 Preface Since the publication of the first edition of this bilingual dictionary on footwear ten years ago (June 1990) there have been many developments in this industry but the need for such a dictionary in both English and Spanish is still present. This new, revised and enlarged edition is, as before, intended to meet the needs of the con- noisseur of the footwear industry, especially the manufacturer, the expert on foot- wear who, day by day, in his correspondence, on his order forms and whenever and wherever he attends a Trade Fair, needs to know exactly what kind of heel his cus- tomer requires, or if the lining is to be fleecy or pig-skin, or if when he is asked for "red", the customer means "cherry red" or "wine", etc. This is precisely why the dictionary retains its appendix of at least 60 different colours and shades. The recently incorporated vocabulary is based on a compilation of words and expressions, taken as before, from catalogues, order-forms, leaflets, and reports of all which the Author has jotted down over the past 10 years since the publication of the first dictionary. It should be borne in mind that, unless otherwise expressly stated, all the English terms are considered as being British English and the Spanish employed is that which is spoken in Spain. The work is divided into several parts, English/Spanish and Spanish/English and, of course, it is obvious that certain words may have several different meanings. Therefore, the translation or meaning given here is that which has for the Shoemaker. To cite just one example: the Spanish word for "piso" is translated as "sole" (piso del zapato) and not as "flat, apartment", i.e. "piso" in the sense of "apar- tamento". The original six appendixes have been increased to eight and are as follows: - Footwear machinery - Types of materials - Colours - Parts of a hide/skin - Abbreviations - Conversion tables - Parts & Components of the Boot - Parts of the Last/Types of Last If the present work continues to prove to be a useful tool in the hands of all those who have to do with "boots & shoes", both Spanish and English speaking peo- ples, then the Author's wishes will be more than fulfilled.
