The dour development from Sunday's 34-13 victory over the HAWKS VS. EAGLES 49ers in San Francisco was injuries to middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu and defensive end Patrick Kerney. But coach Mike WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, 1:15 p.m., Holmgren was optimistic Monday that each of the Pro Bowl Qwest Field players from a year ago will be available for this week's game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Qwest Field. TV/RADIO: KCPQ/13; KIRO-AM/710 Tatupu strained his groin, while Kerney aggravated his left shoulder -- the same one that needed surgery during the offseason to repair a torn labrum. Neither is expected to practice much this week, but each should be able to play. On Tatupu, Holmgren said, "I believe he'll be able to play in the game Sunday." On Kerney, he offered, "He is much stronger right now than he was yesterday. So our hope is, if he can regain his strength, which is the biggest thing, then we should have him as well. "It scared him. Because it was the shoulder that he had operated on and he did so much rehab on." The Seahawks pushed their record to 2-5 and climbed into a tie for second place in the NFC West with their win over the discombobulated 49ers.

  • THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 26, No. 5 (2004) a SAFETY ANALYSIS
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 26, No. 5 (2004) A SAFETY ANALYSIS By Gary Selby The Safety: One of football’s rarest scoring plays. The Digest of Rules in the NFL’s Record and Fact Book describes a safety as: “Two points are scored for the opposing team when the ball is dead on or behind a team’s own goal line if the impetus came from a player on that team.” Emphasis on impetus. A fairly straightforward definition. Most fans know a safety when they see one, despite there being numerous types. But when they happen, its like an electric shock. The responses range from “What? So what’s the score now?” to “Better get another beer and some pretzels. This thing’s getting complicated.” But I wanted to look a little deeper. How many safeties have there been in the NFL? What are the types? What is their effect on a game? Can it be measured? I had never seen an analysis of the safety, so I decided to do one myself. My interest was sparked while reviewing files for the PFRA’s Linescore Project. In a 1965 Giants-Cardinals game I saw the following entry for an individual score: StL – Team Safety. Team Safety? Huh? Did the entire Cardinals defense tackle Tucker Fredrickson in his end zone? After a trip to the library revealed the answer, I kept thinking about how devastating a safety can be. You give up possession, give your opponent 2 points, and then you have to punt the ball from your own 20, giving your opponent good, if not excellent, field position.

Our goal is to win preseason games. It’s important. We take it seriously.” ****************************************************************************************************************************************** MID-POINT OF PRESEASON FEATURES FIVE NATIONAL TV GAMES Things are serious out there. Last week in the first full week of preseason, a slimmed-downed BRETT FAVRE completed nine of 10 passes for 91 yards and a TD…new Cardinals quarterback KURT WARNER notched 14 completions in 19 attempts for 151 yards and a TD…and the New England Patriots may have done it again – found an outstanding quarterback in a late round. ”We don’t want to get too excited,” said Favre after Green Bay’s 10-7 victory over San Diego. “We still have a lot of work to do.” As do all NFL clubs as Week 3 of the preseason approaches. The mid-point of the summer schedule includes five national TV games and nine “look-in” games on NFL Network Saturday night that allow fans to see developing action around the league.

  • Sports Leagues' New Social Media Policies
HULL - formatted 4/19/2011 1:59 PM Sports Leagues’ New Social Media Policies: Enforcement under Copyright Law and State Law Michelle R. Hull* INTRODUCTION In 2009, the National Hockey League (“NHL”), National Football League (“NFL”) and National Basketball Association (“NBA”) became the first major North American sports leagues to announce social media restrictions.1 The major sports leagues have similar social media policies, the broadest of which extends longstanding copyright infringement warnings to social media websites like Facebook and Twitter.2 The more narrow social media restrictions limit only play- by-play uploading by players, personnel and coaches, while the broader restrictions purport to prohibit real-time uploading of play-by-play game approximations by all Internet users.3 The NFL, which has always barred play-by-play descriptions of games in progress, extended that ban to social media platforms, requesting that social media play-by-play game accounts be time delayed and limited in amount, in order to protect the game coverage of accredited licensees.4 The leagues’ request that social media platforms not host game time play-by-play approximations raises questions regarding sports leagues’ enforcement of their intellectual property rights. Given that billions of social media users around the globe are able to upload from virtually any public sporting event or broadcast using mobile devices, the sports leagues’ social media policies face issues of enforceability. Contract and property law supply the legal framework for leagues’ authority to control the uploading capabilities of sports arena attendees.5 Employment law forms the legal * J.D. The twelve-minute test, which measures “cognitive ability,” has been shown to have a disparate impact on minorities in various employment situations. This Note contends that the NFL’s use of the Wonderlic also has a disparate impact because of its effect on a player’s draft status and ultimately his salary. The test cannot be justified by business necessity because there is no correlation between a player’s Wonderlic score and their on-field performance. As such, this Note calls for the creation of a football-specific intelligence test that would be less likely to have a disparate impact than the Wonderlic, while also being sufficiently job-related and more reliable in predicting a player’s success.
