Moscow Parks & Recreation Moscow Fall and Winter ‘17 Parks & Recreation Your Guide to Healthy, Active Fun on the Palouse! In This Issue NEW! Landscaping For Birds NEW! Painting With Acrylics NEW! Tasting The Fall Season Palouse Youth Triathlon Fall Sports for Kids and Adults Mayor’s Golf Tournament ...and much more! On the cover: Join us for our 2nd Annual Cops and Robbers Run - great fall fun for the whole family! See p. 6 Welcome to Moscow Parks and Recreation! Director’s Message It’s so hard to believe summer has come and gone. But, the great news is that Moscow Parks and Recreation hosts super exciting fun things to do all year round. Check out this new activities brochure to see just what I’m talking about. When I think of hunting mushrooms, I think of spring time. Check out our “fall” mushroom hunting class taking place in October. There’s still time to get in some rafting trips, too! Oh, and don’t forget all the fall sports programs we offer. Fun for everyone. Pickleball has arrived!!! Lines were added to the basketball court located in Mountain View Park. All you have to do is stop by the HIRC and check out the nets, paddles and ball…for free!! Just bring a valid ID to check them out. Our hope is to add more courts as time goes along. We’ll hope to hear feedback from you to help guide our plans. If you hadn’t heard, Moscow began its phasing of development of park properties. Going in this fall is a new playground, pathway and turf for the new park. It’s located at the corner of Blaine Street and Indian Hills Drive. I’d like to take this opportunity to specially thank Mr. Bill Parks of Moscow for his generous donation of $25,000 toward the purchase of the new playground. It’s people like Bill that makes Moscow such a wonderful place to live. Mr. Parks had also previously donated funding toward the purchase of additional land that became part of this same park. The City officially opened a new restroom facility located adjacent to Friendship Square in the downtown Moscow area. With so many people shopping and attending the multitude of downtown events, this facility was desperately needed. We love our volunteers!!! The Moscow Parks and Recreation Department has close to 1,000 volunteers each year to work the youth programs, work on park projects, raise funds for new facilities and park amenities, to also include those serving on the commissions. Come join us; it’s a blast. We’re always in need of donations to help with the Youth Scholarship Fund. As the economy continues to keep families struggling, the program helps in many ways. Kids that participate in our programs are active, they’re learning, they’re healthier and establishing good healthy active lifestyles that will benefit them in the future as well. They’re also having fun! Please donate to this worthwhile cause. Contact us here at the Parks and Recreation Department for more information, including new program eligibility require- ments effective October 1st, at 208-883-7085 or see our website for more information: www.ci.moscow.id.us As always, I would love to hear from you. How are we doing? Please give me a call or email me and let’s see how we can better serve you. I can be reached at 883-7084 or by email at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you. • 2015 Idaho Wolf Monitoring Progress Report
2015 IDAHO WOLF MONITORING PROGRESS REPORT Photo by IDFG Prepared By: Jason Husseman, Idaho Department of Fish and Game Jennifer Struthers, Idaho Department of Fish and Game Edited By: Jim Hayden, Idaho Department of Fish and Game March 2016 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY At the end of 2015, Idaho’s wolf population remained well-distributed and well above population minimums required under Idaho’s 2002 Wolf Conservation and Management Plan. Wolves range in Idaho from the Canadian border south to the Snake River Plain, and from the Washington and Oregon borders east to the Montana and Wyoming borders. Dispersing wolves are reported in previously unoccupied areas. The year-end population for documented packs, other documented groups not qualifying as packs and lone wolves was estimated at 786 wolves. Biologists documented 108 packs within the state at the end of 2015. In addition, there were 20 documented border packs counted by Montana, Wyoming, and Washington that had established territories overlapping the Idaho state boundary. Additional packs are suspected but not included due to lack of documentation. Mean pack size was 6.4 wolves, nearly identical to the 2014 average of 6.5. Reproduction (production of at least 1 pup) was documented in 69 packs, representing the minimum number of reproductive packs extant in the state. Determination of breeding pair status was made for 53 packs at year’s end. Of these, 33 packs (62%) met breeding pair criteria, and 20 packs did not. No determination of breeding pair status was made for the remaining 55 packs. Mortalities of 358 wolves were documented in Idaho in 2015, and remained essentially unchanged from 2014 (n = 360).
