1 The Siege of Fort Beauséjour by Chris M. Hand Notes Early Conflict in Nova Scotia 1604-1749. By the end of the 1600’s the area was decidedly French. 1713 Treaty of Utrecht After nearly 25 years of continuous war, France ceded Acadia to Britain. French and English disagreed over what actually made up Acadia. The British claimed all of Acadia, the current province of New Brunswick and parts of the current state of Maine. The French conceded Nova Scotia proper but refused to concede what is now New Brunswick and northern Maine, as well as modern Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton. They also chose to limit British ownership along the Chignecto Isthmus and also harboured ambitions to win back the peninsula and most of the Acadian settlers who, after 1713, became subjects of the British Crown. The defacto frontier lay along the Chignecto Isthmus which separates the Bay of Fundy from the Northumberland Strait on the north. Without the Isthmus and the river system to the west, France’s greatest colony along the St. Lawrence River would be completely cut off from November to April. Chignecto was the halfway house between Quebec and Louisbourg. 1721 Paul Mascarene, British governor of Nova Scotia, suggested that a small fort could be built on the neck with a garrison of 150 men. a) one atthe ridge of land at the Acadian town of Beaubassin (now Fort Lawrence) or b) one more west on the more prominent Beauséjour ridge. This never happened because British were busy fighting Mi’kmaq who were incited and abetted by the French. -

GEOFFREY PLANK The Two Majors Cope: The Boundaries of Nationality in Mid-18th Century Nova Scotia* THE 1750S BEGAN OMINOUSLY IN Nova Scotia. In the spring of 1750 a company of French soldiers constructed a fort in a disputed border region on the northern side of the isthmus of Chignecto. The British built a semi-permanent camp only a few hundred yards away. The two armies faced each other nervously, close enough to smell each other's food. In 1754 a similar situation near the Ohio River led to an imperial war. But the empires were not yet ready for war in 1750, and the stand-off at Chignecto lasted five years. i In the early months of the crisis an incident occurred which illustrates many of *' the problems I want to discuss in this essay. On an autumn day in 1750, someone (the identity of this person remains in dispute) approached the British fort waving a white flag. The person wore a powdered wig and the uniform of a French officer. He carried a sword in a sheath by his side. Captain Edward Howe, the commander of the British garrison, responded to the white flag as an invitation to negotiations and went out to greet the man. Then someone, either the man with the flag or a person behind him, shot and killed Captain Howe. According to three near-contemporary accounts of these events, the man in the officer's uniform was not a Frenchman but a Micmac warrior in disguise. He put on the powdered wig and uniform in order to lure Howe out of his fort. -

We, the people of Wisconsin, grateful to Almighty God fbr oar freedom, in order to secure its blessings, form a more perfect gorer:; • menu insure domestic tranquility, and promote the general weifars ; do establish this CONSTITUTION. ARTICLE I. DECLARATION OF RIGHTS. SECTION I. All men are born equally free and indepandent, ar;d have certain inherent rights, among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness ; to secure these rights, governments are insti tuted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of tha governed; SEC. 2. There shall be Heither slavery nor involuntary servitude m this State otherwise than for the punishment of crime, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted. SEC. 3. Every pjrson may freely speak, write and pubh'sh his sentiments on all subjects, being responsible for the abuse of that right, and no laws shall be passed to restrain or abridge the liberty of speech or of the press. In all criminal prosecutions or indictmentii for libel, the truth may be given in evidence, and if it shall appear to the jury, that the matter charged as libellous, be true, and was published with good motives, and for justifiable ends, the party shaii be acquitted ; and the jury shall have the right to determine the law and the fact. SEC. 4. The right of the people peaceably to assembly to consul': for the common good, and to petition the Government or any depa/t ment thereof, shall never be abridged. -

Dafoe and the Free Press; Canada and the French Canadian Question; The Maple Leaf Forever, Canada, Quebec and the Uses of Nationalism; and The Regenerators: Social Criticism in Late Victorian English Canada. The last mentioned was awarded the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non Fiction in 1985. 1492 and All That: Making a Garden out of a Wilderness "The Land is a Garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness." Joel 2:3 For Howard Lamar 1492 and All That - Part 1 "Is not America," Fernand Braudel asks in The Perspective of the World, the third volume of his magisterial Civilization and Capitalism, "perhaps the true explanation of Europe's greatness? Did not Europe discover or indeed 'invent' America, and has Europe not always celebrated Columbus's voyages as the greatest event in history 'since the creation'?" And then the great French historian concludes that "America was . the achievement by which Europe most truly revealed her own nature."' Braudel wrote without any intended irony, but that final remark about Europe truly revealing "her own nature"1 is perhaps what is really at issue in the current reassessment of the implications of Columbus's landfall at Guanahari, or San Salvador, as he named it in his first act of semiotic imperialism. -

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: John Clarence Webster was born 21 October 1863 in Shediac, New Brunswick, which was also where he did his primary studies. He graduated from Mount Allison College in Sackville, New Brunswick in 1882 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1883, he began his medical studies at the University of Edinburgh where he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and a Masters in Surgery in 1888. During the course of his medical training he went to Leipzig and Berlin. He worked as an assistant in the Department of Midwifery and Diseases of Women at the University of Edinburgh until his return to Canada in 1896. He settled in Montreal and was appointed Lecturer in Gynecology at McGill University and Assistant Gynecologist to the Royal Victoria Hospital. In 1899, he accepted an offer to fill the Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Rush Medical College, affiliated with the University of Chicago. He also worked in Hospital at the Presbyterian Hospital, the Central Free Dispensary, and at the St Anthony’s and St Joseph’s Hospitals in Chicago. He retired in 1920. During his career he won prizes, and received many scholarships and honours. -

CJSAEIRCEEA 23) Novemberlnovembre 2010 55 Perspectives "A COUNTRY AT THE END OF THE WORLD": LIVING AND LEARNING IN NEW FRANCE, 1608-1760 Michael R. Welton Abstract This perspectives essay sketches how men and women of New France in the 17th and 18th centuries learned to make a living , live their lives, and express themselves under exceptionally difficult circumstances. This paper works with secondary sources, but brings new questions to old data. Among other things, the author explores how citizen learning was forbidden in 17th- and 18th-century New France, and at what historical point a critical adult education emerged. The author's narrative frame and interpretation of the sources constitute one of many legitimate forms of historical inquiry. E. PHELAN, 2331 St. Catherine Street, lVIontreal HISTORY HE history of Montreal as a centre of population commences with the visit of Jacques Cartier to the Indians of the town of Hochelaga in 1535. The place was situated close to T Mount Royal, on a site a short distance from the front of the McGill College Grounds, and all within less than a block below Sherbrooke Street, at Mansfie1.d Street. It was a circular palisaded Huron-Iroquois strong hold, which had been in existence for seyeral generations and had been founded by a party which had broken off in some manner from the Huron nations at Lake Huron, at a period estimated to be somewhere about 1400. It was at that time the dominant town of the entire Lower St. Lawrence Valley, and apparently also of Lake Champlain, in both of which quarters numerous settlements of the same race had sprung from it as a centre. Cartier describes how he found it in the following words: " And in the midst of those fields is situated and fixed the said town of Hochelaga, near and joining a mountain which is in its neighbour hood, well tilled and exceedingly fertile; therefrom one sees very far. -

AN UNFAMILIAR ESSAY BY FREDERICK J.TURNER Quite early In his professional career Professor Turner evinced an Interest in immigration problems, historically considered, as a particular aspect of his central interest — the study of the territorial advance of the American popula tion. In the course of a review of Roosevelt's Winning of the West, In 1889 Turner wrote: To this valley, also, have come migrations from the Old World such as can be compared only with the great Wandering of the Peoples — the Volkerwanderung — of the Middle Ages. A new composite na tionality is being produced, a distinct American people, speaking the English tongue, but not English.^ Once his period of apprenticeship was completed—It ter minated when Johns Hopkins conferred the doctorate In 1890 — Turner seized the opportunity of planning research projects In this inviting field. As his seminar topic for the college year 1890—91, he selected the study of immigration into Wisconsin.^ Turner's approach to the subject was broad and philosophical. Wisconsin had been rocked by controversies between natives and foreign-born, the latter strongly resenting the enactment of the Bennett Law, which prescribed that all schools in the state should give a portion, of their Instruction In the English language. To the schol ar's mind it was clear that immigration, historically treated, opened the gate to a better understanding between native and foreigner. Toward the close of 1891 Turner published an essay on the "Philosophy of History," in the course of which he took occasion to remark: "^The Dial (Chicago), 10:71 (August, 1889).
