Hello PHriends! Well, the warm weather still seems to be with us as we enter into Fall...but not for long. This time of the year it's time for flip-flops and fire pits. I want to thank all our phriends who came out and walked and/or donated to Relay for Life of Sullivan. Between donations, the raffle for the Bud Light Sound Tower and selling Margaritaville Shrimp, we made a total of $1,386.95. We also won several awards; Four-Day Online Challenge, Best Campsite Food and Best Decoration Theme! Way to go Team!!! The Boots & Bling Jamboree is just a few weeks away, October 3rd. If you have not signed up to volunteer yet, please do so ASAP. At this time we really need help with the clean-up after the event! I hope you all plan to attend and have purchased your tickets! Wear your club shirt to the event with pride!

Again, remember that we do not have a Charity Director this year! If you want to chair a charity and have an event, let me know and the Board and I, will help and support you in any way you need!!

6 7 TROP ROCK MUSICIAN OF THE MONTH THOM SHEPHERD www.thomshepherd.com

If you've been listening to Country or Trop Rock music in the last ten years, then you've probably heard a song or two written by our Trop Rock Musician of the Month, Thom Shepherd, whether you knew it or not. He is one amazing singer/songwriter and many of us had the pleasure of seeing him live and meeting him at our Crawfish & Shrimp Boil in June! He did an outstanding job entertaining us, mingling with the crowd and eating crawfish with many of our members and guests!

Growing up around St. Louis, MO, Shepherd was a water bug and spent his summers on the Mississippi River. When he and his family later moved to Stephens City, VA, he made time to go down to the Potomac River and Lake Anna. He ended up graduating from George Mason University and in 1993 made his way to Nashville, a place he still spends a lot of his time today.

In 2001, he and veteran songwriter Wood Newton wrote "Riding with Private Malone", performed by David Ball, which shot up to the #2 US Billboard Country Chart spot and #36 on the . With the success of this song, Shepherd was sought out by both up-and-coming performers and old, established acts alike.

He is the writer of five #1 singles - “Redneck Yacht Club,” recorded by Craig Morgan, “Riding with Private Malone” recorded by David Ball, Kyle Park’s “The Night Is Young,” Josh Abbott and Pat Green’s single, “My Texas,” and Kevin Fowler’s “Beer Season.”

In total Thom has had over 10 singles and had almost 100 cuts by artists including Easton Corbin, Pam Tillis, John Anderson, Lorrie Morgan, Colt Ford, Bucky Covington, George Jones, Trailer Choir, Montgomery Gentry, Buddy Jewell, and Cledus T. Judd. His music has taken him on 9 tours performing for our military in 17 different countries.

He wrote the title track of Tracy Lawrence’s Grammy nominated album “The Rock,” has a song on James King’s 2014 Grammy nominated album “Three Chords and the Truth,” and wrote the 2011 GMA Canada Song and Video of the year for High Valley’s recording of “A Father’s Love (The Only Way He Knew How).”

Thom Shepherd has kept his personal life under wraps for the most part, but he has let it be known that he is a divorced father of two and a two-time cancer survivor! He currently lives in Austin, TX. He is also the co-owner of the Bourbon Street Music Company and co-president of www.redneckyachtclub.com.

BLOOD DRIVE, TOY DRIVE, RAFFLES…. Over the next two weeks the notes will start to come out concerning raffles, toy drive, and blood drive details. Stand by for more information!

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT DON MIDDLEBROOK AND THE PEARL DIVERS One of the most recognized names in Trop Rock music is Don Middlebrook. Don is a twenty-seven year veteran of Trop Rock songwriting. Many consider his song, “I Stole Jimmy Buffett’s TV Guide,” to be one of the earliest Trop Rock songs ever written, and from that moment on Don’s Trop Rocking has never stopped. In the last twenty-seven years Middlebrook has logged an average of one hundred seventy dates per year all around the nation, including two to three stops in Key West annually. After harmonica player “Fingers” Taylor left Jimmy Buffett’s band, Middlebrook and Fingers toured for four years straight and recorded four CDs together. Middlebrook has recorded 13 albums during his career. His “Beach Bar Serenade” album features the song “Goodbye Captain Tony” which has been dubbed the theme song for the annual Captain Tony Days in Key West. “The Key West Connection,” Don’s 2014 project, raises money for the Key West High School Band & Choir. It was co-written with Lorrian Hemmingway, granddaughter of author Ernest Hemmingway. The band’s latest project, “Songs from Talespin Bay,” is up for the Trop Rock Music Association’s Album of the Year. It features Bob Segar’s horn section, The Motor City Horns, and cover art by world renowned marine life artist, Wyland. Also from that album, the song “The Legend of Sunny Jim” is up for Trop Rock Song of the Year, a very proud moment since Don loves bragging up his peers. Don and the band have been privileged to share the stage with all time greats like Reba McIntyre, The Doobie Brothers, Hall and Oats, Jefferson Starship, Meatloaf, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. A NOTE FROM DON The band and I are honored to be playing the Street Festival at Meeting of the Minds in Key West on November 6, 2015. I will be bringing my six piece band from Michigan for the first time. The guys and I have been gearing up our show all summer long -- getting ready for Duval Street! Three of the guys in the band have never been to Key West. As you all know, they’re in for the trip of their lives. Let the truth be told, if not for this wonderful opportunity, they may have never experienced the Keys. How sad that would have been . . . but, that’s not the story I’m telling here. The band will experience a life-changing week, thanks to the par- rot heads and MOTM. Words cannot express my gratitude for this – but, I do have an idea, a way of saying thank you. The band and I have been in the studio working on some new songs. I told Andrew that I’d like to give everyone that is registered for MOTM a free download of two of our new, never-released songs. It allows you to get to know us a little better, and it’s our way of saying, “Thanks.” More details will be coming on this download after registration closes. Let music bring us together and keep us together!
