It is a genre of North American popular music, originated in the South of the continent, mainly Atlanta and Georgia during the 1920s. Its roots are considered to be the southeastern genres of American folk music and Western music, but blues modes have also been used extensively throught its recorded history. Contry music is most often made of ballads and dance tunes, with simple forms and harmonies, usually accompanied by string instruments such as banjos, electric and acoustic guitars. The term „country music” gained popularity twenty years after the emergence of the genre, preffered over the earlier term, „hillbilly music”. It came to encompass western music, which evolved parallel to it from similar roots, in the mid-20th century. Today, the term “country music” is used to describe many styles and subgenres. The origins of the genre are the folk music of mostly white, working-class americans, who mixed together popular songs, Irish and Celtic fiddle tunes, traditional ballads, and cowboy songs, together with various musical traditions from European immigrant communities. In 2009, country music was the most listened rush hour radio genre during the evening commute, and second most popular in the morning commute in the United States. For something that is now considered to be such a quintessential part of American culture, country music has an interesting history. The main reason for which I choosed this subject for my project is that country music is a very important part of american culture and history. Learning more about this music gendre means learnig more about what is specific for what american culture represents. 4 Colegiul Național ,, Mihail Kogălniceanu’’ Stages of development – Country music’s
