Historical Spotlight: Rob Ickes—Millbrae’s Grammy Award-Winning Artist INSIDE THIS I S S U E : By Paul Baxter

Sometimes you simply have to move to where the grass is greener. Per- Historical Spotlight 1 haps you take a position with a new company that has opportunities not available locally. Or maybe you need a different climate. Millbrae has been home to a number of famous and highly accomplished people that President’s Report 1 did in fact leave for greater opportunities that would enhance their ca- reers. Among them George “High Pockets” Kelly , the 1973 Baseball Tribute to Alma Massolo 2 Hall of Fame inductee and two-time World Series champ; Larry Grena- dier , renowned bassist who has performed with Jazz greats , Pat Metheny, Joe Henderson and Gary Burton; Craig Venter , famed Vice-President’s Message 3 biotechnologist, biochemist, geneticist, entrepreneur, 2008 recipient of the National Science Award and one of the first people to map the hu- man genome; Charles Baty , guitarist extraordinaire with the W. We can add to that distinguished group musician Rob Ickes , a 1984 Millbrae Now & Then 5 graduate of Mills High school. Rob is a celebrated dobro player who now makes his home in Nashville, TN. Rob’s list of achievements and awards is simply amazing. Rob won the International Bluegrass Asso- Calendar of Events 6 ciation’s Best Dobro Player of the Year award for a record-setting fif- teenth time in 2013; IBMA notes that Rob is the most awarded instru- mentalist in the history of the IBMA awards.
