• The COX Line
The COX Line The purpose of this note is to outline my present knowledge and conclusions on a Cox family line in t he ancestry of my wife, Betty (Poteat ) Olds, who probably descends in at least three ways from this one family. Collateral descents are not emphasized here, although in the first portion I have deviated from this pattern to consider possible relatives of Thomas Cox. The line begins in a Quaker family living in Chester Co unty, PA, with possible co nnections to New Castle Co unty, Delaware. The Quaker and civil records of those counties may yet provide additional material on these families. Beyond that, the line probably extends to England. The colonial sites connected with the early records of this family are in the present states of Pennsylvania and Delaware. The history of certain of the civil and Quaker divisions of the region are of interest in what follows. Delaware has three counties: Kent, New Castle and Sussex, sometimes called the Lower Three Counties from the Pennsylvania point of view. New Castle, the original county, was formed in 1673 and has a common border with Chester Co., Pa. The other two Delaware counties were formed in 1682. In Pennsylvania, the original counties were Bucks, Philadelphia and Chester, established in 1682. Lancaster County was formed from Chester in 1729 and York County was formed from Lancaster in 1749. Adams County was formed from York in 1800.1 This region was attractive to Quakers from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales even somewhat before the 1682 invitation of William Penn to come to his new colony free of religious persecution.

  • The Twenty Greatest Music Concerts I've Ever Seen
THE TWENTY GREATEST MUSIC CONCERTS I'VE EVER SEEN Whew, I'm done. Let me remind everyone how this worked. I would go through my Ipod in that weird Ipod alphabetical order and when I would come upon an artist that I have seen live, I would replay that concert in my head. (BTW, since this segment started I no longer even have an ipod. All my music is on my laptop and phone now.) The number you see at the end of the concert description is the number of times I have seen that artist live. If it was multiple times, I would do my best to describe the one concert that I considered to be their best. If no number appears, it means I only saw that artist once. Mind you, I have seen many artists live that I do not have a song by on my Ipod. That artist is not represented here. So although the final number of concerts I have seen came to 828 concerts (wow, 828!), the number is actually higher. And there are "bar" bands and artists (like LeCompt and Sam Butera, for example) where I have seen them perform hundreds of sets, but I counted those as "one," although I have seen Lecompt in "concert" also. Any show you see with the four stars (****) means they came damn close to being one of the Top Twenty, but they fell just short. So here's the Twenty. Enjoy and thanks so much for all of your input. And don't sue me if I have a date wrong here and there.

  • Voices in the Hall: Sam Bush (Part 1) Episode Transcript
VOICES IN THE HALL: SAM BUSH (PART 1) EPISODE TRANSCRIPT PETER COOPER Welcome to Voices in the Hall, presented by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I’m Peter Cooper. Today’s guest is a pioneer of New-grass music, Sam Bush. SAM BUSH When I first started playing, my dad had these fiddle albums. And I loved to listen to them. And then realized that one of the things I liked about them was the sound of the fiddle and the mandolin playing in unison together. And that’s when it occurred to me that I was trying on the mandolin to note it like a fiddle player notes. Then I discovered Bluegrass and the great players like Bill Monroe of course. You can specifically trace Bluegrass music to the origins. That it was started by Bill Monroe after he and his brother had a duet of mandolin and guitar for so many years, the Monroe Brothers. And then when he started his band, we're just fortunate that he was from the state of Kentucky, the Bluegrass State. And that's why they called them The Bluegrass Boys. And lo and behold we got Bluegrass music out of it. PETER COOPER It’s Voices in the Hall, with Sam Bush. “Callin’ Baton Rouge” – New Grass Revival (Best Of / Capitol) PETER COOPER “Callin’ Baton Rouge," by the New Grass Revival. That song was a prime influence on Garth Brooks, who later recorded it. Now, New Grass Revival’s founding member, Sam Bush, is a mandolin revolutionary whose virtuosity and broad- minded approach to music has changed a bunch of things for the better.

“Gone for a Soldier”: The Civil War Letters of Charles Harding Cox Contributed by Mrs. Caroline Cox Wyatt* Edited by Lorna Lutes Sylvester In January, 1864, Charles Harding Cox wrote his sister in Indianapolis, Indiana : “Was it patriotism, belligerant spirit, or tired of home that induced me to enlist. I am sure it was not the last and for the life of me can not think why I came for a ‘sojer’.’’ Such a statement was unusual for Cox whose exhuberance and enthusiasm carried him through almost three years of service in the Seventieth Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, and a few lines later he reassured his sister: “Katie! I was a fool for writing the above and did not think while writing it . You must not think I am having a rough time, as no soldiers have ever seen a more easy and pleasant time than the Seventieth Indiana . .” Cox had thoroughly enjoyed his first eighteen months in the army. From August, 1862, to January, 1864, most of his time had been spent guarding trains and performing picket duty near Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Gallatin, Murfreesboro, and Nashville, Tennes- see? He had frequently received “bids” to dances and parties and thought southern girls “far more agreeable and sociable than those at home.” Yet, as Cox warned his sister, the Seventieth Indiana in January, 1864, had been assigned to a new corps “in the extreme front” and the real “tug of war” was to come. As part of the First Brigade, Third Division, Twentieth Army Corps the Seventieth Indiana participated in the Atlanta campaign and Major General William T.

The Majestic Silver Strings, produced by Buddy, is his re-imagination of country songs, loaded with guitars, atmosphere and attitude. Guest vocalists on the album include Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Lee Ann Womack, Chocolate Genius, Ann McCrary and Julie Miller. Rounding out the band are Dennis Crouch on bass and Jay Bellerose on drums. The Majestic Silver Strings and the album’s guests are among the most well respected and in-demand current musicians. Making a record of this caliber was a dream and took luck of scheduling to make come true. A bonus DVD with concert footage of the first, and only performance to date with Buddy, Marc, Bill and Greg playing the tracks selected for this project, will be included with the CD. The musicians re-interpret classic country songs written by some of the most esteemed songwriters including Lefty Frizzell, Roger Miller and George Jones, whose hit “Why Baby Why” is sung by Buddy on the record. The band also tackles a few traditional compositions and several new songs including “God’s Wing’d Horse” written by Julie Miller and Bill Frisell. Many projects boast one guest vocalist; Buddy has six revered friends lending their voices to the recording including Emmylou Harris on “Why I’m Walkin’” and Lee Ann Womack on “Meds.” Buddy also does a duet of “I Want To Be With You Always” with Patty Griffin.
