Mercy Corps delivers lifesaving aid to help hard-hit communities survive, recover and rebuild. CONGO they took shelter, we built safe places for kids to play. Business & Human Rights Resource Centre appoints Mayling Chan as its East Asia Researcher & Representative November 2010 Business & Human Rights Resource Centre is pleased to announce the appointment of Mayling Chan as its East Asia Researcher & Representative. She is based in Hong Kong. Mayling will begin working with the Resource Centre in December, covering China (including Hong Kong), Taiwan and Singapore. She will draw attention to the human rights impacts (positive & negative) of companies in the region; highlight under-reported cases and concerns raised by civil society; seek company responses to alleged abuses; undertake research missions; and build contacts with NGOs, companies, investors, journalists and government representatives. A large number of candidates applied for the position and five were interviewed; the applicants were of a very high calibre. About Mayling Chan Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mayling worked at Oxfam Hong Kong from 1991 to 2005, serving from 2000-2005 as Programme Director of the organization, focussing on Asia and Africa. Her research and work over the years at Oxfam Hong Kong and as an independent consultant have covered development, environmental and human rights issues, including rights of access to natural resources, indigenous rights, women’s rights, and labour rights. Mayling co-led a campaign on fair employment conditions and the supply chain in relation to the garment industry in Hong Kong. In Cambodia she examined how logging and rubber companies were impacting local communities. Mayling’s research projects and consultant work have taken her to a range of countries including mainland China, Ecuador, Cambodia, North Korea, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Cuba, Ethiopia and Zambia. -

Kaduna, Nigeria | Emmanuel Bamidele for Mercy Corps ADVANCING PEACE IN A CHANGED WORLD COVID-19 effects on conflict and how to respond SEPTEMBER 2020 Introduction Dire predictions regarding the impact of COVID-19 on armed conflict and violence have proliferated since the pandemic began. One notable forecast projects that thirteen countries are likely to experience new conflicts in the next two years due to the exacerbating effects of the pandemic. COVID-19 is now widely understood as a potential threat multiplier that can amplify existing conflict drivers, as well as an accelerant of existing conflict processes that can hasten a spiral into deeper instability. Research from past pandemics, like HIV/AIDS and Ebola, makes clear that exposure to infectious disease increases the risk of armed conflict. Conflict, in turn, tends to exacerbate disease transmission and hinder public health responses. Pandemics have a similar effect as other external shocks, such as natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, and droughts), extreme temperature rise, declines in export prices and economic crises—all of which are associated with the outbreak or intensification of conflict within a year of onset, especially in low-income and ethno-linguistically fragmented countries. On the other hand, COVID-19 could present opportunities for governments, donors, and practitioners to catalyze some positive trends toward peace while blunting the political, economic, and social consequences of the virus. Before these opportunities recede, the international community must ensure that crucial investments to address conflict drivers—both those that predate the pandemic and those that have been exacerbated by it—are not diverted elsewhere, while proactively anticipating and preventing COVID-19’s worst impacts in conflict-affected contexts. -

Our work has been successful because of relationships that have been established on a local, national and international basis with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), local partner charities, corporations, hospitals and governments working to provide access to improved healthcare in over 100 countries throughout the developing world and here at home. Together we have distributed medical equipment and supplies to over 600 partner charities working with healthcare institutions and missions around the world. Globus Relief values resources, accountability, quality, efficiency and credibility with our partners and those we serve and has an aversion to waste. These values have prevented millions of pounds of useable surplus from ending up in landfills and salvage facilities across the United States. This has strengthened our position with many of our long-term partners and gives us the ability to engage in new collaboratives that will be instrumental in adhering to our values as well as the continued success of the vision, mission and operations of Globus Relief. Dear Colleague: As you begin the important work of the 111th Congress, we write to provide you with information about U.S.-Cuba policy and to offer our resources and our best advice as Congress debates the policy and considers legislation in the year ahead. U.S.-Cuba relations have been at a standstill for many years, but momentum for change is developing. President Obama has pledged to remove travel restrictions on Cuban-Americans, and Secretary of State Clinton told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during her nomination hearing that the Obama Administration will conduct a review of Cuba policy. Important groups that cut across the political spectrum -- including Cuban-Americans, the U.S. business community, leading religious denominations, advocates for human rights, foreign policy specialists and others – all support significant changes in the policy. Public opinion research conducted in 2008 has also documented a growing majority for changing U.S. policy toward Cuba in the Cuban-American community itself. According to a pre-election poll conducted by Florida International University, the majority of Cuban Americans support unrestricted travel and direct bilateral talks between the two countries. Internationally, pressures to change our Cuba policy are growing. In this hemisphere, all of Latin America’s elected leaders, most notably Brazil’s president Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva and Mexico’s president Felipe Calderon, have urged the United States to change its Cuba policy. In Cuba itself, processes of change are underway. Fidel Castro is ailing. His successor and Cuba’s current president, Raul Castro, has begun some modest economic reforms, and has called for direct negotiations with the Obama administration.
