BRINGING ETHNOGRAPHY HOME: KNUT HJALMAR STOLPE’S WORK IN PERU (1884) Ellen FitzSimmons Steinberg Jack H. Prost University of Illinois at Chicago INTRODUCTION Stübel. Their intent was to document the tombs before the Necropolis was totally destroyed. The Ancón, on Peru’s central coast, is one of the results of their 1875 excavation were originally most explored, excavated, and plundered sites published between 1880 and 1887 in 15 volumes in that country. Bates took a dim, but fairly common, view of Sophoclean satyr play: ‘When one looks over what is left of these satyr dramas h e cannot help being surprised that the great tragic poet who produced such masterpieces as the Oedipus Tyrannus , the Antigone and the Electra could stoop to such composition.’ 1 With an attitude like this, it is no wonder that scholars have long resisted as cribing Sophoclean fragments to lost satyr plays while there was any possibility that they might have come from the more ‘respectable’ sibling genre of tragedy.

McKITRICK ABSTRACT. -The forelimb musclesof several speciesof the kingbird group are here described and illustrated, with the goal of discovering character statesof use in delineating cladeswithin the Tyrannidae. These musclesconform in all species to the oscine pattern as described by other authors, with the exception of a few features. Special attention is given to M. latissimus dorsi caudalis, the only muscle that varies widely among, as well as within, the speciesexamined. Absence of this* musclein the speciesofMyiozetetes could mean that this group is a clade. Variation in other tyrannids, however, indicates that closely related speciesmay be losing M. latissimus dorsi caudalis independently. Burcu Arıkan Erciyas B.A. Bilkent University, 1994 M.A. University of Cincinnati, 1997 Committee Chair: Prof. Brian Rose ABSTRACT This dissertation is the first comprehensive study of the central Black Sea region in Turkey (ancient Pontus) during the Hellenistic period. It examines the environmental, archaeological, literary, and numismatic data in individual chapters. The focus of this examination is the central area of Pontus, with the goal of clarifying the Hellenistic kingdom's relationship to other parts of Asia Minor and to the east. I have concentrated on the reign of Mithradates VI (120-63 B.C.), but the archaeological and literary evidence for his royal predecessors, beginning in the third century B.C., has also been included. Pontic settlement patterns from the Chalcolithic through the Roman period have also been investigated in order to place Hellenistic occupation here in the broadest possible diachronic perspective. The examination of the coinage, in particular, has revealed a significant amount about royal propaganda during the reign of Mithradates, especially his claims to both eastern and western ancestry. One chapter deals with a newly discovered tomb at Amisos that was indicative of the aristocratic attitudes toward death. The tomb finds indicate a high level of commercial activity in the region as early as the late fourth/early third century B.C., as well as the significant role of Amisos in connecting the interior with the coast.

This article aims to explain how Ptolemy could have constructed a map of the Pontus Euxinus (Black Sea), as described in his Geography, under the assumption that his sources were similar to those that have come down to us. The method employed is based on the comparison of Ptolemy’s data with corresponding information from other ancient sources, revealing the most conspicuous similarities and differences between them. Three types of information are considered as possible “constituent elements” of Ptolemy’s map: latitudes, coastline lengths, and straight-line distances. It is argued that the latitudes Ptolemy used for the key points determining the overall shape of the Pontus (Byzantium, Trapezus, the mouth of the Borysthenes and the Cimmerian Bosporus, the mouth of the Tanais, etc.) were most likely inherited from earlier geographers (Eratosthenes, Hipparchus, and Marinus). In exactly the same way, Ptolemy’s data on the circumference of the Pontus and the length of the coastal stretches between the key points (from the Thracian Bosporus to Cape Karambis, Sinope, Trapezus, and the mouth of the Phasis, etc.) closely correlate with the corresponding estimates reported by other geogra- phers (Eratosthenes, Artemidorus, Strabo, Pliny, Arrian, and Pseudo-Arrian), which implies that Ptolemy drew on similar coastline length information.

In two former small publications* I exhibited comparative vocabula-' ries of the Greek and Gaelic, and of the Latin and Gaelic languages respectively, and endeavoured to shew that a large proportion of the words in the two classical tongues might be traced to a Celtic origin : with this distinction, however, that while the Greek words appeared to be derived in a great measure directly from the Celtic, the Latin words seemed to have been derived from the same source, partly in a direct line, and partly through the medium of the Greek ; and in the contributions alluded to in reference to this inquiry, I attended chiefly to the words commonly employed by the writers of these languages. The present attempt, also, has for its object to trace the etymology of some of the proper names mentioned by these writers, and to shew that these may likewise be explained on the same principle ; and while some have contended for the Sanskrit origin of the Greek, and for the Sanskrit, Greek, Teutonic, and Slavonian origin of the Latin, there is not wanting ample, if not conclusive evidence, of the partly- Celticf origin of these languages, as well as of the nations which em- ployed them.
