In 2011 Christmas Day falls on a Sunday and St Stephen's Day falls on a Monday. New Year's Day 2012 falls on a Sunday. There is no specific rule about what happens when a public holiday falls on a weekend. You are not automatically entitled to take the next working day off work. You are entitled to the normal alternative arrangements for public holidays. These are: A paid day off within a month of the public holiday An additional day of annual leave An additional day's pay The nearest church holiday to the public holiday as a paid day off. Under the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 you may ask your employer, at least 21 days before a public holiday, which of the alternatives will apply to you. Your employer should respond to you at least 14 days before the public holiday. In practice, most employers will give employees Tuesday 27 December and Monday 2 January off in lieu of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day – but it is important to remember that this is not an automatic entitlement. Blarney girl Emma Bickerdike recently competed in the National Juvenile U12 2km Cross Country championships at Sligo racecourse. Emma was selected to compete for both the Cork team and the Munster team, having finished 2nd in the Cork County championships and 3rd in the Munster championships. Emma had a great run in the nationals where she finished in 9th place out of 145 competitors being the first Cork girl home. She helped Munster win the provincial title, and Cork the county title, which meant she came home with 3 All Ireland Championship medals. This was a great achievement for Emma who trains exceptionally hard for competitions under the supervision of her coaches at Leevale AC (where she is now a member) and her dad Mark. Well done Emma.
