The Romans in Worcester A Town and its Hinterland Education Pack Education Pack Welcome The Romans in Worcester resource is intended to align with the national curriculum in England, with the focus on Worcester and its hinterland bringing the wider understanding of Roman Britain closer to home. The resource book provides information for teachers of Key Stage 2 learners, along with accompanying PowerPoint presentations, suggested activities and other resources. There is an accompanying loan box incorporating replica items as well as archaeological finds from the Mab’s Orchard excavation at Warndon, Worcester. The book is laid out with information for teachers shown alongside the relevant PowerPoint slides, to help you explore a variety of themes with your learners. At the start of each chapter and before each activity, we provide a listing of relevant points in the Key Stage 2 programme of study. The understanding of historical concepts, such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity and difference, is a key aim within the national curriculum for history, while the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain (including ‘Romanisation’ of Britain: sites such as Caerwent and the impact of technology, culture and beliefs, including early Christianity) is a required part of the Key Stage 2 curriculum. Therefore we have highlighted key changes and new introductions that took place in the Roman period by marking the text in bold. We hope that you will find this a useful and inspiring resource for bringing archaeology and the Romans into your classroom. Active OCR: A Level II Start Up Grant Enhancing the humanities through innovation: Over the past several years, many large archives (such as the National Library of Australia and the National Library of Finland) have attempted to improve the quality of their digitized text collections by inviting website visitors to assist with the correction of transcription errors. In the case of print collections, an optical character recognition (OCR) system is typically used to create an initial transcription of the text from scanned page images. While the accuracy of OCR engines such as Tesseract and ABBYY FineReader is constantly improving, these systems often perform poorly when confronted with historical typefaces and orthographic conventions. Traditional forms of manual correction are expensive even at a small scale. Engaging web volunteers—a process often called crowdsourcing—is one way for archives to correct their texts at a lower cost and on a larger scale, while also developing a user community. -

Introduction and context 6 7 Research and cultural heritage institutions have, in recent years, given increasing 8 consideration to crowdsourcing in order to improve access to, and the quality of, their digital 9 resources. Such crowdsourcing tasks take many forms, ranging from tagging, identifying, 10 text-correcting, annotating, and transcribing information, often creating new data in the 11 process. Those considering launching their own cultural heritage crowdsourcing initiative are 12 now able to draw upon a rich body of evaluative research, dealing with the quantity of 13 contributions made by volunteers, the motivations of those who participate in such projects, 14 the establishment and design of crowdsourcing initiatives, and the public engagement value 15 of so doing (Haythornthwaite, 2009; Dunn and Hedges, 2012; Causer and Wallace, 2012; 16 Romeo and Blaser, 2011; Holley, 2009). Scholars have also sought to posit general models 17 for successful crowdsourcing for cultural heritage, and attempts have also made to assess the 18 quality of data produced through such initiatives (Noordegraaf et al, 2014; Causer and Terras, 19 2014b; Dunn and Hedges, 2013; McKinley, 2015; Nottamkandath et al, 2014). All of these 20 studies are enormously important in understanding how to launch and run a successful 21 humanities crowdsourcing programme. However, there is a shortage of detailed evaluations 22 of whether or not humanities crowdsourcing—specifically crowdsourced transcription— 23 produces data of a high enough standard to be used in scholarly work, and whether or not it is 24 an economically viable and sustainable endeavour. -

A VINDOLANDA JOURNEY by Deb Bennett, Ph.D. In the Wild Uplands of Northumbria: Once every year since 2002, I have spent a month at Vindolanda, also known as Chesterholm Museum, a wonderfrul historical park in the wilds of northern England. For Americans, describing anything English as “wild” may sound a bit extreme: we think of England as a center of civilization, culture, and urbanity -- not a place to go camping and hiking with scenery such as you might find on the Appalachian Trail or in Yosemite Park. But England is not all London, not all Oxford or Cambridge. The northern part of the country, where it borders on Scotland, was historically known as “the borderlands” -- for centuries a dangerous, politi- cally-contested no-man’s-land laid out on steep scarps, cloven valleys, and high uplands where the only cattle are woolly sheep and the wind whips a wary lookout’s hair. This is a country for pheasant and deer, with beautiful fall colors and fast-running “burns” where trout and salmon leap. The glass-clear tarns and lochs of the Lake District, nearby to the northwest, are part of Britain’s national park system and feature mountain views and world-class fly fishing. Vindolanda sits atop a flat hill within a steep- sided valley. The long stone wall is the actual fort; ruins in the fore- ground are of the village and temple complexes. Here almost 2,000 years ago, Roman armies built forts, and later a massive wall, to divide the civilized South from the wild North. -

It will be published in April 2014 in vol. 8 (1) of the International Journal of Humanities and Arts Computing (http://www.euppublishing.com/journal/ijhac), and appears here thanks to Edinburgh University Press. 1 Crowdsourcing Bentham: beyond the traditional boundaries of academic history Tim Causer, Bentham Project, Faculty of Laws, University College London Melissa Terras, Department of Information Studies, University College London Abstract: The Bentham Papers Transcription Initiative12 (Transcribe Bentham for short) is an award-winning crowdsourced manuscript transcription initiative which engages students, researchers, and the general public with the thought and life of the philosopher and reformer, Jeremy Bentham (1748–1832), by making available digital images of his manuscripts for anyone, anywhere in the world, to transcribe. Since its launch in September 2010, over 2.6 million words have been transcribed by volunteers. This paper will examine Transcribe Bentham’s contribution to humanities research and the burgeoning field of digital humanities. It will then discuss the potential for the project’s volunteers to make significant new discoveries among the vast Bentham Papers collection, and examine several examples of interesting material transcribed by volunteers thus far. We demonstrate here that a crowd- sourced initiative such as Transcribe Bentham can open up activities that were traditionally viewed as academic endeavors to a wider audience interested in history, whilst uncovering new, important historical primary source material. In addition, we see this as a switch in focus for those involved in digital humanities, highlighting the possibilities in using online and social media technologies for user engagement and participation in cultural heritage.
