Impact of armouring cement tetrapod on olive ridley sea turtle nesting beach at Gahirmatha rookery of Odisha coast has also been reported in this study. This study documented the area of nesting beach has reduced from 0.07 km2to 0.06 km2. Due to a constraint of nesting space, turtles were forced to nest in the gap of cement tetrapods adjacent to the arribada beach and get entangled there, resulting into either injury or death. A total of 209 and 24 turtles were reported to be injured and dead due to placement of cement tetrapods in their nesting beach during 2008-09 and 2010-11 respectively. Olive ridley turtles in Odisha are now exposed to many problems other than fishing related casualty and precautionary measures need to be taken by the wildlife and forest authorities to safeguard the Olive ridleys and their nesting habitat at Gahirmatha. -

Threats to Sea Turtles Artificial Lighting
Threats to Sea Turtles Artificial Lighting Artificial lighting is a significant sea turtle conservation problem. Sea turtle hatchlings instinctively move towards the brightest light when they hatch – on a natural beach, this is the night sky over the ocean. The artificial lighting causes the hatchlings to become disoriented, and ultimately leads to their death. Below are two maps. The “Artificial Lighting” map is a satellite image of the lights that are visible at night in Florida from space. The “Florida County” map will be used for reference. You will also need your “Sea Turtle Nesting Data” from an earlier lesson. Directions: Using the data provided identify areas where artificial lighting has the greatest impact on sea turtle hatchlings. Artificial Lighting Map Lightly shaded areas (yellow) - Lights visible at night from space Compare the “Artificial Lighting” map with the blank county map below. Color in the counties which have the most visible night lights from space. County Map Compare this data with data you collected earlier of the nesting sites of Green, Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles. Mazzotti1 Abstract - Dermatemys mawii (Central American River Turtle), locally known in Belize as the “Hicatee” and in Guatemala and Mexico as Tortuga Blanca, is a large, highly aquatic freshwater turtle that has been extirpated from much of its historical range of southern Mex- ico, northern Guatemala, and lowland Belize. Throughout its restricted range, Dermatemys has been intensely harvested for its meat and eggs and sold in local markets. -

Sea level rise, increasing frequency of large tropical cyclones, loss of reef-building corals and other effects are projected to result in direct economic losses consuming over one-fifth of the gross domestic product of nations in the region by 2100. Resilient mangroves shorelines provide multiple buffers against climate change effects. In addition to serving as habitat for marine species and wildlife, mangroves also provide storm protection for coastal communities, a buffer against coastal erosion, carbon sinks, and additional resiliency for economically important habitat such as coral reef. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Belize has initiated community-based adaptation projects to educate local populations and stakeholders about these emerging problems and to implement “no regrets” adaptation to climate change effects. Understanding of climate change science varies among demographics and opinion leaders within Belize but the value of mangrove habitat for storm protection and fish habitat is generally accepted. -

This Month, the Year of the Turtle Extends Its Hand to You, the Reader
Get involved in a citizen science program in your neighborhood, community, or around the world! Citizen science programs place people of all backgrounds and ages in partnerships with organizations and scientists to collect important biological data. There are many great programs focused on turtles available to the public. Below we highlight citizen science programs from North America and around the world with which you can become involved. We thank everyone who has contributed information on their citizen science programs to the Year of the Turtle thus far. We also greatly thank Dr. James Gibbs’ Herpetology course at SUNY-ESF, especially students Daren Card, Tim Dorr, Eric Stone, and Selena Jattan, for their contributions to our growing list of citizen science programs. Are you involved with a turtle citizen science program or have information on a specific project that you would like to share? Please send information on your citizen science programs to [email protected] and make sure your project helps us get more citizens involved in turtle science! Archelon, Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece This volunteer experience takes place on the islands of Zakynthos, Crete, and the peninsula of Peloponnesus, Greece. Volunteers work with the Management Agency of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos (NMPZ), the first National Marine Park for sea turtles in the Mediterranean. Their mission is to “implement protection measures for the preservation of the sea turtles.” Volunteers assist in protecting nests from predation and implementing a management plan for nesting areas. Volunteers also have the opportunity to assist in the treatment of rescued sea turtles that may have been caught in fishing gear or help with public awareness at the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre.
