14 March, 2020: CORONAVIRUS ROILS FINANCIAL WATERS FOR IDLED CRUISE INDUSTRY. CAN IT SURVIVE? Flourishing cruise lines were gearing up for their busy spring season when it all came crashing down due to pandemic. The once-flourishing global cruise industry appears, for now, to be an early casualty of the novel coronavirus. Dead in the water, as they say. All major cruise lines now have suspended operations for 30 to 60 days. Two Princess ships sit empty on San Pedro’s deserted waterfront — next to the also- closed USS Iowa museum ship — with no passengers and no place to go. Affected in the canceled voyages are Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and MSC. Earlier shutdowns were announced, on March 11 and 12, respectively, for Viking and Princess cruise ships. The dramatic turnaround in the normally busy and flourishing industry comes in the wake of a devastating public relations moment — the grim specter of glamorous ships carrying stricken and contagious passengers in search of a port, carried on TVs across the world. 14 March, 2020: WHICH CRUISE LINES HAVE SUSPENDED OPERATIONS DUE TO CORONAVIRUS AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR MY HOLIDAY? The global cruise industry is taking a break from operations for at least a month as travel restrictions due to coronavirus take hold around the world. The first cruise operator to announce it was suspending its river and ocean cruises for a temporary period was Viking, closely followed by Princess Cruises, and nearly all other major cruise lines have made similar announcements in the past 48 hours. The unprecedented move to shut down the global cruise industry follows advice from both the UK and US governments that those aged 70 and over, and those with pre-existing health conditions, should avoid cruise holidays for the time being, while coronavirus is such an important health issue. 14 March, 2020: AIDA CANCELS ALL CRUISES UNTIL APRIL 3RD – CREW ARE WELCOME STAY ON BOARD The German Cruise line AIDA Cruises has made a very difficult decision announcing temporarily pause of its global cruise operations until early April 2020. The decision was taken as a response to the global spread of COVID-19 virus, recently calling for extraordinary measures and for the resolute contribution of all stakeholders to stop the outbreak. In a letter sent to the crew members, Aida announced that the shipboard employees will be given options to stay on the ships during this period, or return home, therefore the crew are given freedom to decide what is best for them and their families. Regardless of their decision, there will be no terminations of crew contracts. That means nobody has to leave the ship. The crew who plan to disembark and return home, even if their contracts are longer, they can do so as soon as the company arranges for flight tickets. In both cases, AIDA will cover the flight costs. 14 March, 2020: THE CRUISE INDUSTRY PRESSURED CARIBBEAN ISLANDS TO ALLOW TOURISTS ONTO THEIR SHORES DESPITE CORONAVIRUS CONCERNS SAM DUNCOMBE, head of the Bahamian environmental organization reEarth, looked on with concern Thursday as island authorities debated whether to allow passengers to disembark from Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ Braemar, the latest ship hit by the novel coronavirus. The Dominican Republic turned away the Braemar at the end of February due to health officials’ concerns about flu-like symptoms reported on board. But in a move typical of an industry that tends to play island nations against one another, the cruise company called the decision an “overreaction” and found a friendly port in St. Maarten. 13 March, 2020: A CRUISE EXPERT DESCRIBES THE BIGGEST MISTAKE PRINCESS CRUISES MADE IN HANDLING THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK THAT INFECTED OVER 700 PEOPLE ON THE DIAMOND PRINCESS Before canceling all of its cruises through May 10, Princess Cruises received criticism for its handling of a coronavirus outbreak on its Diamond Princess ship that eventually infected over 700 passengers and crew members. The biggest mistake made by the cruise line came from those running the ship, like its captain, said Ross Klein, a professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland who studies the cruise industry and runs a website documenting illness outbreaks on cruise ships. The ship's captain wasn't proactive enough in taking steps to protect passengers and crew members, Klein said, leaning instead on the Japanese government, which imposed a quarantine over three days after learning that a prior passenger on the ship had tested positive for the coronavirus. Saga, the travel and insurance company for the over-50s, has cancelled all cruises until May in response to the growing coronavirus threat. Announcing the move, Saga said its decision was sparked by the government’s latest travel advice, which states that people over 70 and those with pre-existing health conditions should avoid cruises after a number of ships around the world were locked down because of Covid-19 outbreaks onboard. Saga said it would temporarily suspend its cruises for six weeks until 1 May and would be offering customers a full refund or credit for future sailings. It said that the move would result in a £10m-£15m loss in pre-tax profit for its cruise business and that it would take additional action – including cost-cutting – if necessary. Martinique has three of the 11 confirmed cases in the French overseas territories, which includes five cases in French Guiana on the South American mainland. In a press release, tourism officials said the ship will remain three miles off shore from the bay of Fort-de-France while sick passengers onboard are tested. The ship’s passengers were not the only ones who found themselves floating out at sea. The island of Barbados had also denied landing rights to the Fred Olsen Cruise Line Braemar Thursday after it confirmed that four crew members and a passenger had tested positive for COVID-19. Two weeks earlier the ship had been turned away from the Dominican Republic for fear several people aboard with flu-like symptoms might be carrying coronavirus. On Wednesday, the ship’s passing near Haiti’s southern coast created panic in the town of Port Salut after passengers heard there were people with COVID-19 aboard. On its way to the Bahamas late Thursday, the Braemar said in a statement it was “working with the Bahamas, the UK government, UK Chamber of Shipping and Public Heath England to ensure that all guests can return home as soon as possible.” The crew and guest had tested positive

11 March, 2020: AS CORONAVIRUS FEAR SPREADS, MORE PORTS ARE TURNING AWAY CRUISE SHIPS Many Americans are sticking with plans for cruises in the coming weeks, despite new advisories from the U.S. Department of State and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that they should stop cruising for now. But not everything is looking upbeat for their upcoming voyages. In the wake of the advisories, a growing number of ports are weighing whether to turn away cruise vessels for the time being. The port towns of Santa Barbara and Monterey, in California, on Monday became the first U.S. ports to announce they would stop cruise ship arrivals. Both cited the CDC advisory. Canadian officials also are considering whether to stop cruise ship arrivals at all Canadian ports, according to Bonnie Henry, the top health official in British Columbia. “There is ongoing discussions” on the topic, Henry said at a press conference on Monday, noting the decision is being made at the federal level with input from her and other regional health officials. She said a decision could be coming in a matter of days. “We are in a very critical time around the world,” Henry added, before suggesting that she was in the camp calling for a temporary halt to cruise ship arrivals. “It is my belief that we should be delaying our cruise season until we are in a safer place internationally.” If Canada took such action, it would join a growing number of countries that are banning cruise ship arrivals outright. The latest is India, which implemented a ban on cruise ship arrivals over the weekend. The United Arab Emirates also made a similar decision in recent days. Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci warned Americans with underlying health conditions against boarding cruise ships and airplanes as the number of coronavirus cases across the world grows. "If you are an individual that has an underlying condition right now, not wait, you should start to distance yourself from the risk: crowds, getting on a long plane trip and, above all, don't get on a cruise ship," Fauci said on "Fox News Sunday." The virus outbreak is hitting airline and cruise line companies particularly hard. A cruise ship hit by the virus is expected to dock in Oakland, California, Monday, while another ship is waiting for tests on two crew members before docking in Port Everglades, Florida, according to the Miami Herald. 09 March, 2020: FLORIDA’S $9 BILLION CRUISE INDUSTRY FACES BIGGEST TEST SINCE 9/11 Sunday’s travel warning by the US State Department against cruising was meant to protect travelers from the novel coronavirus, known as Covid-19. But it also threatens the health of one of South Florida’s largest and most iconic industries, responsible for nearly $9 billion in annual economic impact to Florida — most in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. That impact is now in doubt in the wake of the global Covid-19 outbreak. Fears about the disease and an oil price war sent stocks plummeting so dramatically Monday that trading on the New York Stock Exchange was halted within minutes of the market’s opening bell. Trading resumed after a brief hiatus, but the breather wasn’t enough to halt the worst one-day point loss for the Dow Jones Industrial Average in history. While the overall market fell 7% Monday, cruise stocks plunged by 20% and more. Shares in Carnival Corp., the world’s largest carrier, fell 20%, while Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. dropped by 25% and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings plummeted by 27%. COVID-19 OUTBREAK ON THE DIAMOND PRINCESS CRUISE SHIP: ESTIMATING THE EPIDEMIC POTENTIAL AND EFFECTIVENESS OF PUBLIC HEALTH COUNTERMEASURES Cruise ships carry a large number of people in confined spaces with relative homogeneous mixing. On 3 February, 2020, an outbreak of COVID-19 on cruise ship Diamond Princess was reported with 10 initial cases, following an index case on board around 21-25th January. By 4th February, public health measures such as removal and isolation of ill passengers and quarantine of non-ill passengers were implemented. By 20th February, 619 of 3,700 passengers and crew (17%) were tested positive. Conclusion: The cruise ship conditions clearly amplified an already highly transmissible disease. The public health measures prevented more than 2000 additional cases compared to no interventions. However, evacuating all passengers and crew early on in the outbreak would have prevented many more passengers and crew from infection. Mainichi reports a cruise ship that was turned away from Japan this week over coronavirus fears returned to Taiwan on Saturday, with everyone on board testing negative for the illness. Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung boarded the Super Star Aquarius as soon as it docked at the northern port city of Keelung around noon, leading a team of medical staff to perform health screening of the 1,738 passengers and 776 crew. In the evening, authorities announced that the tests showed that no one had the coronavirus. According to the ship and media reports, 41 of the guests had recently travelled to China, where the virus is spreading. Chen told a press conference before boarding the ship that all passengers could go home later in the day and self-monitor their health condition afterwards provided no one tested positive for the virus.

07 Feb 2020: , Health concern at disembarkation New York Post reports more than 4,000 passengers fled a Royal Caribbean liner in Bayonne, New Jersey, on Friday after their Caribbean cruise — and four passengers were rushed to the hospital for testing. The four suspect passengers were all Chinese nationals who had recently traveled from home. They included one who fell ill with a fever on board and later tested positive for influenza. Some of the patients were wheeled off the vessel on gurneys, and all four were immediately taken to University Hospital in Newark by infectious-disease experts from the federal Centers for Disease Control for testing. Another 23 passengers — Chinese nationals who had been kept in isolation during much of the 12-day cruise on the Anthem of the Seas — were also whisked away by CDC officials, who had boarded the vessel as soon as it docked. They were taken to Newark Liberty International Airport for a flight back to China, as per a Trump administration directive amid the global outbreak. No one aboard the ship is known to have the coronavirus, but that was no consolation to many passengers, who complained that crew members kept them in the dark about the threat in their midst.
