WUDANG is the source of the pure and original Tai Chi, Taoist Qigong (energy meditation), Traditional Medicine (herbs, acupressure & massage) and Taoist philosophy. Life on the mountain has always been about harmony with nature. Throughout China’s history, emperors and learned literates have sought the expertise of the Taoists and bestowed riches to help with the construction of the majestic timeless temples and centres of learning, such as the “Purple Cloud Temple Palace” and “The Golden Summit”. TAOIST LIFESTYLE The Taoists were the true, dedicated masters of Tai Chi. They lived in the mountains, and along with their followers, they led a monastic life in quest of achieving immortality and following the way of the Tao. They meditate and practice daily in order to attune their spirit, condition their mind, discipline their body, and elevate the essence. Zhang San Feng (Temple Tai Chi) Tai Chi was originally created by Taoist monk Zhang San Feng in the Wudang Mountain. Its philosophical foundation was based on the Yin Yang principle of balance. Mind-body harmony and being in tune with the natural order of things were at the core of Tai Chi practice. In this 21st century, Temple-style Tai Chi is still considered the most authentic and wholesome Tai Chi system. The original system has been preserved intact in the Wudang Mountain; with both mind and body discipline still the focus for health and longevity. MASTER ZHAO grew up learning the traditional wisdom of the Taoist sages, almost without knowing that these skills were not widely known. Master Zhao was the Wudang Mountain martial art champion then later all China Wudang Kung Fu Champion before he returned home to the quietude of Wudang to further develop his ‘internal art’. Master Zhao is the Chief Instructor and Keeper of the Nine Dragon Taoist Tai Chi Academy in Wudang Mountain. YANG SHENG The Taoists’ search for longevity and immortality led to the development of “life nourishing” skills called ‘Yang Sheng.’ To nourish life and live to a full life span of 100 years, one has to prevent and avoid illness, and the method for doing this was called ‘Sheng Dao’ or the ‘way of life’. This includes living a normal and regulated lifestyle, proper nourishment of the body, mind, emotions, adaptation of lifestyle to seasonal and climatic changes, and Qigong practice (Nei Dan -inner- and Wai Dan -outer- methods). FIVE ANIMALS FROLIC The development of Chinese physical therapy is generally attributed to Taoist physician Hua Tuo (136 AD - 208 AD) who was also known for his use of general anaesthesia with Indian hemp during surgical operations and extensive knowledge of anatomy, acupuncture, and obstetrics. After noticing that exercise facilitated the digestive and circulatory functions in addition to strengthening the body, he devised a series of movements that imitated the motions of the five animals - the tiger, stag, bear, monkey, and crane. Each series of movements has specific health effects. For example, the crane movements - where the arms are spread out to imitate a bird spreading out its wings - facilitate the breathing process.
