    The Nesses Parish Plan & Community Strategy 2004 Sponsored and funded by the Countryside Agency Supported by The Community Council of Shropshire 1 Executive Summary Objectives of the questionnaire The Nesses Parishes are situated in the north of Shropshire between the towns of Oswestry and Shrewsbury. The Parish Plan is a Countryside Agency initiative with the principal objective of developing an action plan designed to ensure the future vibrancy and well-being of the parishes. The data on which the plan is based was generated from two questionnaires submitted to 1) every household and 2) every occupant of the parishes. Data were analysed for three different areas of the parishes, 1) Nesscliffe 2) West of the A5 and 3) the Nesses. Main Findings of the survey Household questionnaire There are 383 households on the electoral register and 85% responded The average household size is 2.49 members A higher proportion of householders aged over 60 live in Nesscliffe (31%) than West of the A5 (21%) or The Nesses (26%) Car ownership is high with 94% of households having at least one car About one third of households report at least one member has attended a school in the parishes, with a significantly higher proportion (50%) from Nesscliffe 58% of households already have access to e-mail and the internet and desire access to Broadband internet 90% of households are registered with a GP in either Prescott (50%) or Knockin (40%) Individual questionnaire 72% of individuals over the age of 10 responded Transport The most used forms of transport are car (79%), bus (15%) and bicycle (11%) Respondents in Nesscliffe are twice as likely to use the bus as those in other areas reflecting the route of the bus through Nesscliffe village People in the 11 – 17 age group are most likely to use the bus.

    Vibrant Shropshire Cultural Strategy Consultation 2020 Survey Report FULL REPORT January 2021 1. Background and Methodology Shropshire Council’s consultation on the draft Cultural Strategy ‘Vibrant Shropshire, Independent by Nature’ was open for 12 weeks from the 12 October 2020 to the 5 January 2021. The draft Strategy sets out the ambition and strategic priorities for the cultural sector for the next 10 years. The draft Strategy was developed in partnership with a range of stakeholders. A Cultural Strategy Working Group ensured a partnership approach and engagement opportunities were provided through a series of individual and group meetings and larger workshops. Appendix 2 of the draft strategy set out the wide range of workshops and one to one engagement interviews and the findings that had resulted from this engagement activity. The consultation was promoted widely using press releases on Shropshire Council’s Newsroom, local newsletters (for example the SALC news to town and parish councils and the VCSA news for the voluntary and community sector), and by targeted email communications to key stakeholders. Members of the public and key stakeholders were encouraged to participate during the 12-week consultation using an online survey or by email or letter. Additional face to face engagement during the consultation period was not possible, however, those unable to contribute online were provided with alternative means of providing their views. The consultation provided robust information to allow people to provide well- informed feedback. The draft strategy was published alongside the evidence base, strategic evidence review (including details of links to other strategies and policies), details of feedback from workshops and face to face engagement, and an Equality and Social Inclusion Impact assessment.

    November 2020 Dear Member It is that time again, the time to write, edit and distribute the month’s Newsletter soon comes around. I hope that this edition finds you well. The present Covid-19 situation continues but there are some signs of hope. Progress is being made with at least two vaccines and the results sound very promising. But I don’t want us to be dominated by this invisible pest. So, for the next hour (or 5 minutes depending upon your attention span) enjoy reading all about, among other things the previous owner of Lindley House which may result in a bit of a discussion. I have received an article from our friend Walter Baynes, and it can be seen that Walter is well skilled in producing excellent articles when he is not busy elsewhere. I did manage to get out and about between lockdowns (although it did rather feel as I was putting my head above the parapet) and have also been researching the Heraldic Shields I started off last month. I know just how disappointed you will be without a quiz, so I have included some for you. Don’t forget to send me any ideas, suggestions, articles, jokes, photographs, indeed anything you like. I will include them in the bulletins or the monthly Newsletter as and when they arrive. I have been royally entertained by a number of you with your jokes and videos.     Explore the finest of Shropshire’s 'Wild’ Humphrey Kynaston countryside the Robin Hood of Shropshire Humphrey Kynaston Way Long Distance & Circular Routes Route 1 Humphrey Kynaston, a notorious highwayman known as ‘Wild’ Humphrey, was Cardingmill Valley to Picklescott descended from a Welsh Prince. He was born around 1468, to Lady Elizabeth Grey, the 5.3 miles / 8.5 km granddaughter of Humphrey Plantagenet, Duke of Gloucester, and second wife of Sir Roger Kynaston, Constable Keeper of Myddle Castle. Humphrey became Constable on Route 2 his father’s death, but, through his dissolute and riotous manner of life, he fell into Picklescott to Church Pulverbatch 2.6 miles / 4.2 km debt, and Myddle castle fell into ruin. His horse, reputed to have been called Beelzebub, the devil’s horse, was said to have been shod backwards to confuse Route 3 pursuers. Humphrey, following a skirmish in Oswestry, along with his half brother Church Pulverbatch to Pontesbury Thomas, and Oliver and Richard Kynaston, was accused of felony in December 1487, 3.2 miles / 5.1 km and he became a notorious outlaw. These were unsettled times, with the Wars of the Route 4 Roses still ongoing, and the Welsh Marshes a lawless no man’s land. Pontesbury to Ford 6.3 miles / 10.1 km In December 1492 Humphrey, now of Nesscliffe, rode to Stretton Dale, (Church Route 5 Stretton) with his half-brother Thomas Kynaston of Shrawardine, and Robert Hopton Ford to Montford Bridge of Hopton, Nesscliffe. There, they killed John Heughes. Many aided and abetted them, 2.4 miles / 3.9 km and in their escape they were lodged and fed at Pontesbury, Shrewsbury and Nesscliffe.

Background and Methodology Shropshire Council’s consultation on the draft Cultural Strategy ‘Vibrant Shropshire, Independent by Nature’ was open for 12 weeks from the 12 October 2020 to the 5 January 2021. The draft Strategy sets out the ambition and strategic priorities for the cultural sector for the next 10 years. The draft Strategy was developed in partnership with a range of stakeholders. A Cultural Strategy Working Group ensured a partnership approach and engagement opportunities were provided through a series of individual and group meetings and larger workshops. Appendix 2 of the draft strategy set out the wide range of workshops and one to one engagement interviews and the findings that had resulted from this engagement activity. The consultation was promoted widely using press releases on Shropshire Council’s Newsroom, local newsletters (for example the SALC news to town and parish councils and the VCSA news for the voluntary and community sector), and by targeted email communications to key stakeholders. Members of the public and key stakeholders were encouraged to participate during the 12-week consultation using an online survey or by email or letter. Additional face to face engagement during the consultation period was not possible, however, those unable to contribute online were provided with alternative means of providing their views. The consultation provided robust information to allow people to provide well- informed feedback. The draft strategy was published alongside the evidence base, strategic evidence review (including details of links to other strategies and policies), details of feedback from workshops and face to face engagement, and an Equality and Social Inclusion Impact assessment.

I hope you were not too inconvenienced by the snow. Here in the Shrewsbury office thankfully we did not get to see the worst of it and suffered little disruption to our working day. In this edition Tony Gibbons invites you to consider crown green bowling. It is good to hear he is still keeping himself busy. I first met Tony 20 years ago when I spent the day poll-clerking for him. I would love to hear from more of you. Let me know how you spend your time.
