Essas correla»c~oespodem ser de v¶ariostipos, integrando desde relacionamentos espaciais a especi¯ca»c~oesambientais (descri»c~oesdo habitat ou ecossistema). Sistemas de Biodiver- sidade s~aosistemas de software complexos que permitem aos pesquisadores realizar tais an¶alises. A complexidade desses sistemas varia com os dados manipulados, os usu¶arios visados e o ambiente em que s~aoexecutados. Um problema que deve ser enfrentado, es- pecialmente no ambiente Web, ¶ea heterogeneidade dos dados, agravado pela diversidade dos vocabul¶ariosdos usu¶arios. Esta disserta»c~aocontribui para resolver tal problema, apresentando um modelo de banco de dados que permite organizar informa»c~oesde biodiversidade a partir de padr~oes mundiais de dados. O modelo proposto combina informa»c~oescoletadas em campo com dados de cat¶alogosde museus. Para a especi¯ca»c~aodo modelo, contamos com a parti- cipa»c~aode ec¶ologose bi¶ologos. Para permitir o acesso e recupera»c~aode informa»c~aode forma transparente, o banco de dados foi encapsulado em um servi»co Web, que ¶einvo- cado por aplica»c~oescliente. A valida»c~aodo banco de dados e do servi»coutiliza dados reais fornecidos pelos parceiros do projeto BIO-CORE, um projeto de pesquisa que en- volve pesquisadores em Computa»c~aoe Biologia da UNICAMP e USP. v Abstract Biodiversity research requires correlations of data on living beings and their habitats. Such correlations can be of di®erent types, considering factors such as spatial relationships or environmental descriptions (e.g., description of habitat and ecossystems). Biodiversity information systems are complex pieces of software that allow researchers to perform these kinds of analysis. The complexity of these systems varies with the data used, the target users, and the environment where the systems are executed. One of the problems to be faced, especially on the Web, is the heterogeneity of the data aggravated by the diversity of user vocabularies. This research contributes to solve this problem by presenting a database model that organizes the biodiversity information using consensual data standards. The proposed model combines information collected in the ¯eld with that from museum data catalogues. The model was speci¯ed with the assistance of biologists and ecologists. The database was encapsulated in a Web service to ensure transparency in using, accessing and recovering the information. The service is invoked by client applications. The database and service were validated using real data, provided by the BIO-CORE project partners. Figures highlighting important anatomical features associated with couplets in the key are provided. 2 INTRODUCTION The Caribbean region is one of the major coral reef zoogeographic provinces and a region of intensive human use of marine resources for tourism and fisheries (Aide and Grau, 2004). With the world-wide decline of coral reefs, and deterioration of shallow-water marine habitats in general, ecological and biodiversity studies have become more important than ever before (Bellwood et al., 2004). Ecological and biodiversity studies require identification of collected specimens, often by biologists not specializing in taxonomy, and therefore identification guides easily accessible to a diversity of biologists are necessary.

Abstract: Faunal inventories are extremely important, especially when focused on neglected groups, such as echinoderms, and concentrated on areas under intense anthropic activity such as the São Sebastião Channel in Brazil (23°41’ - 23°54’ S and 45°19’ - 45°30’ W). Intertidal and upper sublittoral zone collections were per- formed at five sites of the Channel’s continental margin from May to August 2001. The rocky substrate down to 19 m deep was surveyed by snorkeling and SCUBA diving from August 2002 to May 2004, on both margins of the Channel: continental (14 sites) and insular (10 sites). We report a total of 38 species of echinoderms (one Crinoidea, nine Asteroidea, 13 Ophiuroidea, nine Echinoidea and six Holothuroidea). Seven of those species have been recorded here for the first time for the Channel (four Asteroidea, two Ophiuroidea and one Echinoidea). Rev. Biol. Trop. 53(Suppl. 3): 207-218. Epub 2006 Jan 30. Specimens were collected from Ría Celestún, Chelem, Dzilam, Ría Lagartos, Yalahau, and Nichupté-Bojórquez lagoons, during May and June 2010. Six species belonging to the families Amphiuridae, Ophionereididae, and Ophiodermatidae were recorded. Amphiodia pulchella was recorded in all lagoons; Ophiostigma isocanthum was recorded only in Yalahau, and Ophionereis olivacea and Ophioderma appressa were recorded only in Nichupté- Bojórquez. Amphiodia cf. planispina was recorded in all the coastal lagoons except in Yalahau; all the individuals of this species were juveniles.

Species are gathered into four groups: 1) A. taxa distributed from North/South Carolina, or from the Caribbean Sea, to Southern Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), B. species ranging from North/South Carolina, Florida, São Paulo, to the mouth of Rio de la Plata, 2) species ranging from Rio de Janeiro south to the San Matias Gulf, 3) taxa recorded from Chile or from Antarctic/Subantarctic waters north to Uruguay, 4) a single cosmopolitan species. While ophiuroids are represented in each one of the mentioned groups, asteroids are restricted to the first one.

We present a systematic list of the echinoderms from Gulf of Mexico’s Mexican waters based on specimens of the Colección Nacional de Equinodermos, Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. This list reveals an important echinoderm biodiversity present in the Gulf of Mexico, where five of the six echinoderm classes are represented. A total of 209 echinoderm species is recorded, distributed in 129 genera, 63 families and 25 orders. 31 new records for the Gulf of Mexico are presented: Asteroidea (16), Ophiuroidea (nine), Echinoidea (one) and Holothuroidea (five).
