  • Nutrient Chemistry of the Coastal Waters of Guam
Micronesica 24(1): 109-135, 1991 Nutrient Chemistry of the Coastal Waters of Guam ERNEST A. MATSON Department of Natural Sciences and Marine Laboratory The University of Guam, UOG Station, Mangilao, Guam 96923 Abstract-Concentrations of nitrate+ nitrite (NO.), reactive phosphate (RP), silica, iron, and chloride in Guam's aquifer, rivers, and coastal waters have been surveyed at various sites between February 1988 and September 1990. Nearshore waters to leeward (west coast) are enriched several fold over those to windward, and are more rapidly depleted and attain lower concentrations with distance from shore. Also, waters within 0.1 km of shore are enriched in NO. and Si- over those 0.5 to 8 km offshore, especially to leeward. River plumes, essentially all of which occur within a 10 km region, rarely discharge past the reef crest, except during rain that lasts several days. Sills at river mouths shoreward of reef moats entrain terrigenous material in the oligohaline zone that is recycled through estuarine plankton. Total annual runoff from the southern rivers that drain the lateritic southern province is approxi mately equal to aquifer leakage from the equally-sized northern car bonate plateau. Because the two terrains have distinct geochemical prop erties, both the type and amount of nutrients delivered to the coastal zones of each province are quite different. Further, individual aquifer subbasins have distinct Si-/CI- fields. As a result, significant differences in biological community structure and production may occur between windward and leeward sides as well as between lateritic and carbonate provinces, but dramatic physical differences between the two coasts makes testing of hypotheses extremely difficult.

  • Program and Abstracts
CONFERENCE PROGRAM AND ABSTRACTS The Conference Committee thanks the following sponsors: 2 3 Warm Pacific Greetings, from Jacqueline Leckie, President of the Pacific History Association The powerful currents and pounding waves of the mighty Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa have a way of returning many people to where they or their forebears have been before. And so the Pacific History Association returns to Guam in 2016 for the 22nd Pacific History Association Conference. This is 26 years after PHA gathered here in 1990. Returning and re-voyaging connect us and allow us to bring new knowledge and new people to the shores we have visited before. New connections offer possibilities for the future but must have a foundation to build upon. That foundation comes from the past, our accumulated knowledge, ideas, conversations, art and skills from what we have learned from the people before us. More than ever, we can’t just rely upon the forces of nature to guide us back to earlier shores but we need guidance and care to make these journeys. Scholars and teachers—in the broadest and most inclusive ways—have acquired a wealth of knowledge and skills to face huge challenges. So we look to that past wisdom and to that protection to guide us into the conference, over the next few days. It seems fitting that the theme of this conference—Mo'na: Our Pasts Before Us—calls for a re- examination of the past to learn how this has shaped the present and may etch the future. The message of the conference theme is more fitting than ever for the renewal, enrichment and sustainability of our cultures and environments.

Annotated Checklist of the Fringing Islets of Guam, Mariana Islands by Alexander M. Kerr University of Guam Marine Laboratory Technical Report 165 December 2019 ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am endebted to Prof. Omaira Brunal-Perry (UOG) for access to maps and lessons in Guam history, Prof. G. Curt Fiedler (UOG) for fieldwork, and Prof. John Jenson (UOG) for advice on geology. Gef dankulu na Saina Ma'åse, todu hamyo! iii iv SUMMARY Guam, the southernmost and largest island of the Mariana Islands, Micronesia, includes around its coastline several dozen small islets. They are primarily of consolidated reef- facies limestone, but include volcanic dikes and unconsolidated sandy islets. The largest is the atoll-like and forested Cocos Island (0.33 km2) atop the southern barrier reef. About half, however, are tiny (<1000 m2), low-lying and sparsely vegetated limestone pinnacles. Traditionally, the larger islets have been important as landmarks for nearshore navigation. More recently, they have become of interest as potential preserves of native flora and fauna. In this report, I list Guam's fringing islets as gleaned from recent maps, aerial photography, historical sources, and field surveys. Information is also provided on each islet's geographic coordinates, distance to Guam, maximum elevation, islet area, islet perimeter, vegetation area, and vegetation perimeter. v vi TABLE OF CONTENTS Acknowledgements iii Summary v Introduction 1 Compilation of data 2 Results and discussion 3 Literature cited 5 TABLE I: The fringing islets of Guam, Mariana Islands 7 vii viii INTRODUCTION Guam, the southernmost and largest island of the Mariana Islands, Micronesia, includes around its coastline several dozen small islets.

It stands as a special place and source of pride for all. Here at Guam National Wildlife Refuge, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service works with others to conserve and restore the precious resources of both land and sea. Guam’s native wildlife flourish in the native limestone and coastal forests and sea creatures are bountiful in the tropical blue waters. Visitors seek out the beauty and tranquility provided and enjoy seeing and learning about wildlife. The refuge is a vital link between Guam’s cultural and natural heritage, a vibrant reminder of the place nature holds in all of our lives and a treasure for future generations. CCPs provide long-term guidance for management decisions and set forth goals, objectives and strategies needed to accomplish refuge purposes and identify the Service’s best estimate of future needs. These plans detail program planning levels that are sometimes substantially above current budget allocations and, as such, are primarily for Service strategic planning and program prioritization purposes.
