The Toreros look to build off last season's 4-3 West Coast Conference mark and re-assert themselves as a force in the conference. USO returns nine starters from the 1997 squad including All WCC First Team member Heather Swanson (Irvine, CA) and second team selection Sherice Bartling (San Diego, CA). The Toreros also welcome back a talented group of sophomores headed by WCC Honor able Mention Claire Currie (Downey, CA) and Gina Poltl (San Diego, CA) who scored five goals in her freshman campaign and ranked second on the team in scoring (13 points). Offensively San Diego returns its top goal-scoring threats in Bartling (seven goals, seven assists), Poltl (5,3) and Currie (5,2). Bartling and Poltl each exploded for a hat-trick against Portland State and UC Santa Barbara respectively. Defensively USO Torero Seniors (clockwise): Nicole Gorton (9) , returns a veteran lineup led by Aimee Wagstaff. Sherice Bartling, Katie Eichhorst Swanson, and WCC Honorable Mention Vanessa Thiele (West Hills, CA). Goalkeeping is something of a question mark with returning senior Katie Eichhorst (El Cajon, CA) battling talented newcomers Leila Duren (Branson, CA) and Caley Cook (Redmond, CA) for playing time in the USO nets. Another boost to the Torero assault should come from Alison Benoit (Cedar Hill, TX), a junior center midfielder transfer from the University of Florida. Benoit scored two goals and added three assists for the Gators in 1997. One of the biggest challenges for USO in 1998 could be the rugged non-conference schedule, which includes showdowns with four PAC-10 schools (Stanford (#22),UCLA (#19), Cal and Oregon). Once the non-conference schedule is completed, the road gets tougher. Competition in the West Coast Conference should be intense again in 1998. Santa Clara and Portland both advanced deep into the NCAA Playoffs in 1997. Santa Clara, enters 1998 ranked #3 in the Soccer USD Head Coach John Cossaboon America Pre-Season poll, while Portland appears at #7 . ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 1997 WEST COAST CONFERENCE HONORS & STANDINGS

Ada Greenwood Assistant Coach (1st season)

Greenwood graduated from Dominican College in 1997 after completing a stellar three-year career at the NAIA power. Greenwood was an NAIA All-American forward and was the leading goal-scorer in the Independent Conference, ending his career with 39 goals and 41 assists. Greenwood compiled an impressive coaching resume directing club teams and assisting with high school squads. He was an assistant at Branson High School from 1994-98 and helped Branson to four straight NorCal State Titles. During hi s tenure, Branson was undefeated in all of 1996-97 and was ranked first in the nation by Umbro. He also served as an assistant at Redwood High School in 1993 which won the NorCal Title the same year. Greenwood's club experience includes directing the Marin Red Rockers of the Premier League to a National Runner-Up finish in the WAGS National Tournament. A native of England, Greenwood grew up in South End in Essex County on the outskirts of London. He played soccer at Eastwood High School and also played tennis.

Tommy Tate Goalkeeper Trainer (4th season)

Tommy Tate enters his fourth season as an assistant coach for the USD women's soccer program, where hi s main focus is the goalkeepers. He pl ayed four years ( 1990-94) with the Toreros as goalkeeper and recorded 17 shutouts and fini shed hi s carrer with a 37-14- 5 record. He recorded 16 wins and nine shutouts as a freshman and went 13-4 during hi s senior campaign. A 1995 graduate of USD with a B.A. in History, Tommy also coaches two San Diego Surf club teams (U-17 boys and U-8 boys); and th e past five years has served as an assistant coach for the boy's team at the University of San Diego High School. Setting The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres over looking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The cam pus is named Alcala Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes away as well. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala ( the Castle) by the Moslems. Chris tians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university, the University of Alcala, whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's style. Both institutions are located on a hill overlooking a river valley.

The Campus The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental I 6th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1984, USO has completed 11 major construction and expansion projects. A five-story, Spanish Renaissance parking garage (I, 100 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square foot Loma Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information technology.

Academics USO enrolls more than 6,600 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree pro grams. The university's academic units include the Col lege of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size generally averages between 18-25 students with the stu dent to teacher ratio being 18: I. Over 97 percent of US D's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and uni versities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top 100 schools in the nation. Student Life Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach Did You Know'? parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more.
