The Rt Revd Stephen Conway is the Area, or Suffragan, Bishop of Ramsbury, in the Diocese of Salisbury, which he is currently ‘minding’ as there is also an ‘episcopal interregnum’ in that diocese. Bishop Stephen was trained at Westcott House here in Cambridge, and until he became Bishop of Ramsbury in 2006 served all his ministry in the Diocese of Durham, in two curacies, then as a Parish Priest, as Director of Ordinands and Bishop’s Chaplain, and finally as an Archdeacon.

    ORM THE SERPENT: A taLE OF VIKING LEICESTERSHIRE Michael Wood It is a real pleasure, and a great honour, to be elected President of the Society – an undeserved honour given such distinguished predecessors. Local history is the root of history, and Leicester is the home of local history. Almost at the start of British writing on local history, following Lambarde in Kent, came Burton’s Description of Leicestershire (which went through Ned Blunt’s printing shop at the same time as the First Folio).1 Burton planned no less than three village histories – Lindley, Theddingworth and Dadlington – and his notebooks are a still untapped source of material, including his transcripts of lost Leicestershire Hundred Rolls in the Bodleian Library which would be a very valuable and exciting task for a local historian with Latin, following the model of the Kent Hundred Rolls Project. Later, as local studies burgeoned the London printer John Nichols compiled perhaps the greatest local history ever written, The History and Antiquities of the County of Leicester, which is still a gold mine for the local historian. That impetus continued throughout the nineteenth century when this society was founded in 1855. Then from the 1930s came a new golden age (a long one – for we are still in it!) when Frank Attenborough brought the Devonian Bill Hoskins here (there are photos of young David counting hedgerows around Oadby!). From then on the Transactions contain a roll call of the great historians who have shaped every generation of students since and opened local studies to a far wider public, nationally and internationally.

    SUFFRAGAN BISHOP OF RAMSBURY STATEMENT OF NEEDS AND PERSON PROFILE 1: THE DIOCESE’S VISION FOR CHANGE With the arrival of a new diocesan Bishop, the Right Reverend Nicholas Holtam, in September 2011 the conversations about re-shaping of the vision and strategy of the diocese have begun. In appointing a Bishop of Ramsbury it is the intention to recruit someone who, together with other senior colleagues and especially the new Diocesan Bishop and the Bishop of Sherborne, could lead in this process and help set a fresh direction and tone. See Appendix A for an extract from Bishop Nicholas’ first Synod address which gives an insight into the direction of travel. The Diocese’s Vision has been for a Church which, changed and revitalised to meet the great challenges of the 21st century, will be confident in faith and grow among the communities of the Diocese. Three key diocesan strategies underline this vision: - to adopt as the underlying themes of our work the five marks of mission of the Anglican Communion - to commit to be a learning and teaching Church for all believers - to work with a vision of developing a body of ministers, lay and ordained, stipended and voluntary, parish-based and engaged in fresh expressions of church, and deployed in response to the mission and ministry needs of our whole communities. These strategies have been the foundation of the Deanery Strategic Plans for the mission and ministry of each of the 19 Deaneries for the last five years. 2: THE DIOCESAN VIEW OF THIS POST The extensive and thorough consultation on the future of the See of Ramsbury and the future ministry of Bishops and Archdeacons in this diocese sought opinions from nearly 1,000 people across the diocese both from schools and parishes, civic bodies, ecumenical partner, producing some thoughtful and insightful responses from 5 open meetings, 2 diocesan meetings, 7 schools meetings and 115 written replies representing Parochial Church Councils and individuals from all walks of life.

In a celebration of new ministry on the 29th July, all our hopes were realised in the Licensing of Revd Trudy Hobson, our new Priest in Charge, by the Bishop of Salisbury in Heytesbury. A full congregation welcomed the Bishop, the Rural Dean and clergy representatives from near and far, who, together with the choir, and music chosen to fit the occasion, witnessed and celebrated both the solemnity of the occasion, and then her joyful installation. Churchwardens, Lay Worship Leaders and Pastoral Assistants led the Welcome of Parish Councils, Schools and the many aspects of church and community life. We rejoice in Trudy Hobson’s calling, her appointment and her licensing and we look forward to her ministry here.
