Such awareness spawned many activities that lead to conservation of important ecosystems and associated species as well as genetic resources of these organisms. The recognition also became the driving factor for Thailand’s signing of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992 and cradled the country through the struggle until the eventual ratification of the Convention in October 2003. Becoming the Contracting Parties to the Convention, however, is not the end of the country’s efforts for the conservation, but rather the end of the beginning for overcoming the challenges to maintain biodiversity for future generations.

Poyarkov6,7, Jing Che8,9, Yangchun Gao10 & Shiping Gong10* Cyrtodactylus species are the most diverse of the geckos and are widely distributed in Southeast Asia, including Thailand. However, their patterns of distribution, especially in northern and western parts of Thailand, remain unknown because few Cyrtodactylus species in these regions have been described. Thus, a data set of mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase 2 (ND2) gene and fanking tRNAs from Cyrtodactylus found in northern and western Thailand, including contiguous areas, was assembled to elucidate phylogenetic relationships and identify the distribution patterns of these geckos. The results showed four well‑supported clades, a northwestern clade (A), a northern clade (B), a western clade (C), and a special clade characterized by specifc morphological features (D). Clades A–C were grouped with strong support by the geography of their localities from northern Thailand (Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai Provinces) along the Tenasserim mountain ranges to Phang‑Nga Province, Thailand. Clade D is a distinct clade of Cyrtodactylus species characterized by a tuberculate and prehensile tail and distributed widely in mainland Southeast Asia. Overall, the results suggest a pattern of geographic separation and distribution of Cyrtodactylus in northern and western Thailand. Additionally, this study provides evidence of a hidden biodiversity of Cyrtodactylus in these regions. Reptiles have a long, complex evolutionary history that has produced diverse species distributed throughout the world, both in water and on land1.

    THAILAND General Information Thailand was for centuries known as ‘Siam’, the official title changing to ‘Muang Thai’ (‘home of the free’) in 1939. The country is located in Southeast Asia and borders Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. It has a population of nearly 65 million in a country roughly the same size as France and has 3,219 kilometers of coastline. Thailand is a constitutional monarchy with a long democratic tradition – political parties and elections. Aside from this Thailand has a small number of Christians (0.5%) and a few Hindus (0.1%). Thailand prides itself on religious freedom and newer religions (Jehovah’s Witness, etc.) are emerging. Situated in the northern hemisphere but in the tropics, Thailand is a tropical country with often hot and rainy weather and annual monsoons. Thailand has a range of geographic regions - mountainous, plains and plateaus, as well as a number of beach areas. Brotherus, who published alist of Bryales in the Flora of Koh (island) Chang, Trat Province, including 44 species (Brotherus, 1901).
