A DECISION that only physical voting will be al- lowed at the National Union of Public Workers’ (NUPW) upcoming elections is not sitting well with some of its members. Speaking after Saturday’s wrap-up of the union’s Annual General Conference, a source told The Barbados Advocate that the elections committee, headed by Acting General Secretary Wayne Walrond, was not allowed to table a proposal for e-voting to take place in- stead. The recommendation argued, amongst other things, that due to the presence of community spread of COVID-19 in the island, it is safer to allow membership to cast their votes online in order to prevent further transmission. Since a spike in COVID-19 numbers in December, and a subsequent lockdown, the is- land’s positivity rate has been on the decline even as the island gradually reopened. “There appears to be some worry that the validity of the votes will be in question if mem- bers are allowed to vote online,” the source noted.
