4 / BFA ANNUAL REPORT 2020 PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS

Dear Member Clubs, invited Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of the Execu- tive Board of the Barbados Football Association (BFA), I welcome you to our AGM.

As I look back at the developments of the year under review, I am pleased at the improved performances of our national selections, especially so of our Senior Men’s and our U20 Men’s Teams who have advanced in their respective competi- tions.

Our efforts in developing the Future Tridents Program has now began to bear fruit. RANDOLPH HARRIS We are at a good place with our local games and must now work together to har- PRESIDENT ness these exceptional talents observed during our various competitions.

In an era of many distractions, we must continue to make our sport attractive to the many boys and girls in areas that are sustainable.

Our women’s football department continues to be of grave concern. In 2020, we invite all of our stakeholders who have a passion for women’s football to come and share their time and thoughts in an effort to make women’s football in Barbados vibrant. The FA has no choice than to support this kind of effort since there are many opportunities in football for females to advance personally and professionally in this beautiful game.

Looking forward, the Association continues to manage its operations in a culture of integrity and compliance, and to this end we have managed to attract a number of partnerships/sponsorships for our competitions. I take this opportunity on behalf of our football community to say thank you for having faith in us.

Our greatest challenge now, however, is to attract the general populace to football. I want to assure them that this game is enjoyable. With his tenacity, the confidence that he could reach a professional level and the support of his family and friends, we produced Thierry Gale right here in Barbados. There are many more Gales here, just needing the correct guidance and mentorship. The public can help us now with its support.

Finally, football is a team game. As leaders of young minds, we have to set an example of teamwork and unity if this game is to progress locally. Let us block the holes and continue to work together for the ‘good of the game’.

RANDOLPH HARRIS PRESIDENT

Barbados remained at the top of refereeing with four members making the official FIFA Referees list once again.

The Gem of the Caribbean Sea managed to stay ahead of Grenada, Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda and Puerto Rico. During a special ceremony at one of the Premier League games at the Barbados Football Association’s Wildey Turf, Gillian Martindale, Shannon Gibson, Tonia Deane and Kevon “Inches” Clarke were present- ed with their FIFA badges for the year by Chairman of the Referees Committee Barney Callender.

Clarke, the lone male in the group, was listed as an Assistant Referee for the second year running, while Gibson and Deane retained their spots on the list in the same capacity since being added in BFA CHAMPIONS CUP 2015 and 2016 respectively. 14 / BFA ANNUAL REPORT 2020 LATAPY APPOINTED HEAD COACH

The Barbados Football Association welcomed Russell “The Little Magician” Latapy to their ranks.

He took over from Technical Director Ahmed Mohamed who had been doubling up in the capacity of Head Coach of the Senior Men’s National Team since 2017. The Trinidadian, who has a decorated football career spanning over 20 years, is best known for representing his local Soca War- riors in the 2006 World Cup.

President Randy Harris said he and the midfield magician had been in talks for two years and Latapy had expressed interest in joining the Association and adding to its development.

Harris also thanked Mohamed for working as coach in the inter- im, after he took the reins from Colin Harewood who served in the position for a short time, for the start he made in reshaping the face of local football.

At the time of his introduction, Latapy, whose coaching career got off the ground in Scotland, said he was ready to give his best and was determined to have his two year contract extend- ed. TRIDENTS LOSE TO

The senior Bajan Tridents went down 1-0 to Nicaragua in their final Concacaf Nations League game, missing out on the chance at League B qualification. Despite playing in front of a packed home crowd at the Barbados Football Association’s Wildey Turf, the visitors’ second half goal cancelled the senior team’s hopes of going to the Concacaf Gold Cup. While the senior men played a solid defensive game in the first half against the Nicaraguans, a second half corner kick, off the heel of Captain Juan Barrera in the 65th minute, was to the team’s undoing.

Following the game, Nicaragua’s Head Coach Henry Duarte said he was expecting a tough game, but made the most of the opportunity afforded to his team in the second half.

Technical Director Ahmed Mohamed, who ended his national team duties with this game, said while he was disappointed, the boys had played a much better game than Nicaragua, who had all professionals on their side, but failed to get the desired result.
