2 Notes from the Editor

Last time I was writing about snowdrops and now there is beautiful blossom everywhere. The weeks have been racing past and we’ve had the fun of the Beetle Drive, the Neal’s Yard party and the Easter Egg Hunt. Thanks to Patricia for bringing her bunny over to meet us. Soon it will be the Summer Fete - do join us if you can, the more the merrier! If you can lend a hand, that would be much appreciated too. The Echo is mainly financed by our advertisers, so please give them your support when you can. One more date for your diary - 28th June is National Unplugging Day. (It’s also the date of Morning Chorus’ concert in the church - see separate slip). We’re being encouraged to put down our smartphones, tablets and computers for 24 hours to experience life unplugged. I spend more than enough time checking in on my work phone but, scarily, a recent study found the ‘average’ parent uses their smartphone 240 times a day – on emails, texts and social media. That’s equivalent to four hours every day. In fact, nearly half of parents surveyed are logging into Facebook or other social media before doing anything else – eyes glued to their phones even before getting out of bed or seeing to the kids! If you manage to take a break from technology, let me know what you get up to so we can share ideas of places to go and things to do with other readers in the August issue of the Echo. Good Health, Tish

The ECHO is produced for the villagers of Badingham by the Badingham Community Council Registered Charity No. 274549 The Editor’s decision on whether or where to place material is final. While every effort is made to check information published, the BCC does not endorse the accuracy or reliability of any article or advert within the magazine. E.O.E.

3 BADINGHAM

It seems time has flown since the long winter months and we are all looking forward to a warm and sunny summer.

Summer Fete This year’s fete will again be held at Badingham White Horse by kind permission of Lisa and Mark. We had such a good time last June with the party atmosphere extending into the evening. We are hoping the weather will be as kind as last year – warm and sunny. It’s a lovely occasion for meeting friends and making new ones.

This is our major fund-raising event of the year so please come along and join in the fun. It will be the second year for our Bale Race, organised by Roger Pryke and Rob Welham – contact them for further details. We do hope we have lots of contestants.

The week prior to the fete a committee member will call to collect any contributions you can make towards the tombola or raffle. We are extremely grateful for your generosity and value your support.

Easter Egg Hunt As only a handful of children have taken part in recent years, we have decided to give the Easter Egg Hunt a rest for the time being. A big thank you to Sonja and Tish who organised this year’s activity and also to Patricia who added a seasonal touch by taking her own Easter Bunny into the churchyard for the children to enjoy.

Defibrillator Thank you to everyone who keeps an ‘eye’ on the defib. I haven’t heard of anyone needing it so far – thank goodness!

10 Jumble Sale Success

The Jumble Sale held in Village Hall on Saturday 2 May raised the fantastic sum of £334 for Hillside Sanctuary Equine Appeal.

It was a pity more villagers couldn't attend, but for the loyal regulars who supported or donated in different ways - a big THANK YOU!

A nice bonus was the folk who came from Loddon having seen the event details on the village website, so it's well worth using it to advertise your event.

Patricia Grant

This proved to be a very enjoyable evening - thank you everyone who helped, Caroline for the presentation and everyone who came along to support. We raised £111.50 for the Village Hall. Ann Foster

Beetle Drive Firewood & Kindling Thank you everyone who came along and supported our Beetle Drive. I had no idea how many different versions of playing the game there were! It was a lively and fun evening with quite a lot of noise (someone listening outside said it sounded like the money changers in the Temple), some extremely artistic and imaginative beetles were drawn - sadly there was no prize for the best only for the person scoring the highest number of points and for the person scoring the lowest number of points. We all enjoyed delicious refreshments and £254.50. was raised for church funds of which 10% will be donated to the Village Hall. Thank you to all helpers - these things could not be done without you. Ann Foster on behalf of Badingham PCC.

11 The Maypole Club

In April we had a very successful evening with one of the organisers of the Choir. John really managed to get us all singing. May was a little calmer with our own member Sue demonstrating the art of painting on silk. We are having a Car Treasure Hunt during June followed by a meal at the great White Horse then in July our annual BBQ. Any new members are always made most welcome so do come and join us! We meet the second Wednesday of the month but please ring Mandy or Gillian to confirm as venues are different during the summer months.

29 HISTORIC FINDS IN BADINGHAM Earlier this month a BAFTA was won by The Dectorists a BBC series partly filmed in . Here, Sonja writes about some of Badingham’s historic finds. As we all know, metal-detecting is a popular hobby for those who are honest and mindful of other people’s property. Yet others are quite the opposite and would take it all, even without permission for going on the land. During the early 80s to late 90s we had two lovely men who were metal detecting enthusiasts live in Badingham...Colin Ware and Terry Marsh. Colin lived in The Willows, Bowling Green Road and Terry lived at Wayside, Low Street. Terry was most interested in history and very knowledgeable of all his finds - and if not, sure to find out from Archaeological Survey at . But the most wonderful finds we had in Badingham were human remains in a Low Street garden. It was first thought to be just one but was later identified as being the remains of a man and a women, aged between 25 and 35 years. The female was 5' 1", the male 5' 5". They were possibly Roman and could have been from a Roman Cemetery on the Mound of Burstonhaugh (the Church). Two thoughts on this is - the garden where they were found backs onto the Churchyard and there could possibly be more human remains from Roman times. Also, while in some places it is now almost silted up, in times past the River Alde was navigable by boats through Badingham close to Low Street. Perhaps one day further investigations will be made in the Church- yard, just beyond the present day hedge. I hope it happens in my time. In addition to all this, Badingham folk have made other finds in their gardens: fossils around 60,000,000 years old, flint from the ‘Flake Industry’ about 2,500 BC, a Medieval bronze buckle, C14 door key, an ancient leather shoe, a Puzzle Ring from C18 or C19, a C14 lions head door knocker. A bronze key was found at Stone Cottages in 1950s. Various pottery shards, including some identified as Roman and Medieval, have been found as well as handmade nails, clay pipes and stems, clay and glass bottles - dating from a time when there was no rubbish collection. Being a farming area, some agricultural implements, of course. So you gardeners keep digging and looking, you never know what you might find? Let me know, as I would be interested to see them. Happy hunting, Sonja

23 Last Thursday I was invited to a press briefing at Hall - where next for the Badingham Echo?! - to hear about the milestone of £500,000 distributed to local charities, community projects and individuals in need by the Heveningham Hall Country Fair Trust.

What started in 1996 as a coffee morning to raise funds for three local churches has become a huge affair calling on an army of 200 local volunteers from six villages who plan, steward and cater for the Country Fair and, since that was forced to be cancelled in 2001 due to Foot and Mouth, the Fireworks and now a Christmas Market and Santa ‘Hell Run’.

Funds have been given to local schools, churches, sports clubs, community nurses. The emphasis has been on projects that bring life back to the community and improve facilities.

One of those community projects is the ‘Hall for All’ which is being planned by the villages of Heveningham, Huntingfield and . Both this year’s Country Fair and a medieval fayre at Huntingfield are using the Magna Carta’s 800th anniversary as their theme.

Baron William de Huntingfield owned land from Eye across to the coast and down to Framlingham. He was one of the 25 rebel barons who drew up the Magna Carta, the Great Charter of the Liberties which still forms the basis of constitutional law across the world. William’s nephew Roger de Huntingfield married Nichola le Breton at Badingham in 1278. I’m hoping someone can tell me more about the Badingham connection.

Farming Calendar Much is changing out in the fields. After waiting for a good soak, to give a much needed drink and let the nitrogen through to the roots, the cereals and oilseeds are looking a lot healthier. Grass is growing lush in the sunshine. Heveningham Hall Country Fair with Wings & Wheels Peas and sugar beet have pushed through, barley is coming into ear and field beans will soon be in flower. Meanwhile, after so much of the countryside has been a vivid yellow, the oilseed rape flowers are about to fall and we’ll be wondering how fat the pods will be this year. Farming is so much weather dependent. Not only the clouds that pass over without giving a drop of rain, the strong wind that prevents spraying against disease and the hail that can cause so much damage close to harvest time, drought in Australia, heavy rain in North America or bumper crops in the Ukraine have a huge effect on prices. Not to mention Mr Putin’s export bans, politcal unrest in north Africa and the changing diet of the Chinese people. Enough for any farmer to reach for a crystal ball or Old Moore’s Almanac !
