Basson Family Vineyard the Wine Warp and Weft are the intersecting threads that comprise a piece of fabric. This project is the result of the intersection of many different people and the idea that these interwoven ‘threads of life” can create something grater than the sum of the parts. Shewshwe is a traditional fabric produced in South Africa, considered the denim of the Western Cape. It is durable, worn by everyone, and rooted in tradition. The Vineyard : Basson Family Vineyard Located deep in the Swartland at the foot of the Pardeberg Mountains, the Bassom Family Vineyard was first planted by Stephan Basson’s great grandfather in 1919. This vineyard represents a long tradition of winemaking in South Africa that can be traced back to the first plantings in 1659, boasting 30-year-old, dry- farmed, bush vines. The Sweshew Red Blend reflects a quality of South African wine that is rarely seen in North America. This wine was produced in conjunction with the Basson family, who have been farming their esate in the Swartland for four generations. The Wine : “Sweshwe” Red Blend 33% GRENACHE, 30% SYRAH, 22% CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 10% MOURVÈDRE, 5% MALBEC The wine opens with complex but inviting aromas of graphite, black pepper and mulberry. The palate is rich and dynamic with flavors of Damson plum, kola nut, sassafras, tayberry, and Bing cherry. Silken but lengthy tannins carry the wine from start to finish, with notes of tobacco, oak and spiced vanilla. The Winemaker : Hal Landvoigt Winemaker Hal Landvoigt has traveled wine regions around the world, sourcing the finest grapes and cultivating a unique and unpretentious winemaking style. He was drawn to the Swartland because of the opportunities in viticulture that do not exist almost anywhere else in the world. As he tasted wines with the Bassom family, siting in the 100-year-old earth-bricked cellar that was built by Stephen’s great grandfather, he recognized that he was tasting history. NEW IN 2020 Italian varietals cultivated in Washington’s Yakima Valley. “Those of you, on the other hand, who drink Barolo and Barbaresco on a regular basis should absolutely try a bottle of this, and better yet, should bag it up and serve it blind to your Italian-wine-loving friends. I suspect they will be much more likely to identify this as a Nebbiolo D’Alba than a new-world example.” – Paul Zitarelli, Founder Full Pull Wines & Wine Enthusiast “40 under 40” of 2013 Seattle native Peter Dow was first entranced by Italian cuisine and culture during a fateful trip to Northern Italy in 1972. Upon his return to the States, he opened famed Seattle restaurant Café Juanita in 1977, a concept reflective of his dining experiences in Italian trattorias. While mastering recipes designed to showcase local ingredients, Peter grew fixated on providing a true Italian varietal house wine. Located in the Northwest corner of the Yakima Valley on the south slopes of Ahtanum Ridge, this is one of the oldest vineyards in Washington state, with 1973- planted Cabernet Sauvignon still in production. Red Willow pioneered many varieties in Washington state, including Barbera and Nebbiolo. Farmer and viticulturist Dick Boushey first planted vinifera in 1980. His 160 acres of vineyards are planted on several sites within a two-mile radius, generally south-facing slopes. A HEARTFELT MISSION … Colby Groom, son of notable U.S. and Australian known winemaker Daryl Groom, was diagnosed with a defective aortic valve and underwent two open heart surgeries before the age of 10. During his journey to recovery he began volunteering with the local American Heart Association. Upon recovery, Colby proposed to create a wine and use the proceeds to support heart health charities. Daryl embraced the idea to help lift Colby’s spirits and aid his healing. Together they created Colby Red wine. All the fundraising proceeds made from Colby Red are donated to the American Heart Association as well as other organizations, such as Children’s Heart Foundation, the Make-A-Wish Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Foundation, and heart health research. HORSE HEAVEN HILLS Inspired by the valor and strength of heraldic lions, The Conqueror represents a blend of relentless pursuit and refined winemaking. The quest for the finest grapes was realized at Canoe Ridge Vineyard in Washington state’s renowned Horse Heaven Hills, where warm days give way to cool nights. This hand-crafted wine is deeply layered, concentrated and worthy of cellaring, but is best conquered now. HORSE HEAVEN HILLS AVA The Conqueror hails from the famed Horse Heaven Hills appellation of Washington State. Best known for its award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, the vineyard’s first vines were planted in 1997 and includes plantings of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Roussanne and Cinsault, making it the site of Washington’s most sought-after vineyards for red varietals. This AVA has a insulating “river effect” from the Columbia River, which protects vines from temperature extremes. Optimal sun exposure with cool winds provide cool nights, ideal for excellent sugar to acid balance. Strong, consistent winds contribute to tougher, thicker grape skins, imparting tannins and flavor. While visiting Bordeaux, CC and I made a joke of getting our photo in front of the imposing gates of this great French Chateaux knowing they are not open to the public and their wine is sold mostly to collectors. We wanted to make our own premium Bordeaux blend that we could welcome our guests to enjoy at an accessible price. To create this wine, we sourced from some of the best growers and regions in Washington State, including sites in Red Mountain and Horse Heaven Hills. In 2016, both areas experienced a long, spectacular growing season allowing the grapes to develop ripe flavors and expressive aromatics. Aged in 100% new French oak to frame its age-worthy tannins, the resulting wine is dark, aromatic, and richly textured. A special thank you to artist Donald Rainville for this painting which became the wine's label. Tasting Notes: With flavors of black cherry, kola nut, and cinnamon, this contemplative blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet franc is a harmonic fusion between old world inspiration and new world terroir.

  • Columbia Winery™ Vision Red Blend Vintage 2018
Columbia Winery™ Vision Red Blend Vintage 2018 With roots dating back to 1962, Columbia Winery has been discovering and celebrating Washington wine for over 55 years. Columbia’s forward-thinking philosophy continues today in the hands of a talented and innovative winemaking team led by Winemaker, Sean Hails. We believe the sum of Washington is greater than its parts, inspiring winemaking and blending philosophies rooted in discovery, sourcing our fruit from across a range of Washington’s premier AVAs. Guided by our vision of high quality, approachable wines, each season we select premier vineyard sites, refine our oak regimen and cellar techniques to impart nuance, texture, and complexity in our wines. About the Wine: Our 2018 Vision Red Blend is a Rhône-style red blend borne of our Winemaker Sean Hails’ goal to create a blend with stand-out color, flavor and finish. For the 2018, Sean brought together three classic Rhône varieties: Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Vision brims with generous aromas of fresh-picked dark plum and tangy red cranberry with a unique hint of pepper spice from the Mourvèdre. Notes of ripe red and dark fruits reminiscent of cherry pie filling linger on the palate and mingle with hints of chocolate. Vision finishes with soft tannins and luscious, lengthy hints of fruit and spice that is richly satisfying. Vintage Notes: The 2018 Vision Red Blend was crafted primarily with grapes sourced from the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. We set our sites on the renowned Six Prong Vineyard, which offers consistent, high-quality fruit year after year. This site gives us complex, concentrated fruit, resulting in wines with ripe dark fruit notes and a touch less acidity.

Columbia Winery 2018 Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Franc Washington’s original premium winery, Columbia Winery has been discovering and celebrating Washington wine for over 50 years. Winemaker Sean Hails blends classic traditions with innovative winemaking techniques to craft a distinct collection of Washington wines. Columbia Winery’s unrelenting curiosity and trailblazing heritage is reflected in the grape selection philosophy of premier vineyard sites within the Columbia Valley and its acclaimed AVAs, including Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills, Yakima Valley and Wahluke Slope. With a tasting room located just outside Seattle and a winery in Eastern Washington, Columbia Winery embodies Washington’s welcoming spirit, rich diversity and exceptional wines. About the Wine: Our 2018 Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Franc is rich and robust with medium weight tannins and balanced acidity. Notes of Bing cherry and ripe plum intertwine with subtle hints of dried sage, while wonderful oak notes of vanilla and spice tie this wine together. Our Cab Franc pairs well with a variety of foods from ribeye to mesquite smoked meats. Viticulture Notes: In 2018, we continued sourcing grapes from our favorite block of Alder Ridge Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. Perched high on the crest of a hill overlooking the Columbia River, this block receives a steady onslaught of wind that stunts the vines and produces tiny berries with intense color and flavor. The fruit has helped us win awards year after year. We harvested this block of Cab Franc on October 5, which is 13 days earlier than the previous year. The spring of 2018 vintage was temperate, which led to normal budbreak.
