Name of course: MA Thesis North American Studies Date of submission: 15 August 2018 The work submitted here is the sole responsibility of the undersigned, who has neither committed plagiarism nor colluded in its production. Signed Name of student: Claudia Gielis Gielis /3 Abstract Masculinity and femininity can be performed in many ways. The emo genre explores a variety of ways in which gender can be performed. Theories on gender, masculinity and femininity will be used to analyze both the lyrics and the music videos of these two bands, indicating how they perform gender lyrically and visually. Likewise a short introduction on emo music will be given, to gain a better understanding of the genre and the subculture. It will become clear that the emo subculture allows for men and women to explore their own identity. This is reflected in the music associated to the emo genre as well as their visual representation in their music videos. This essay will explore how both a male fronted band, My Chemical Romance, and a female fronted band, Paramore, perform gender. All studio albums and official music videos will be used to investigate how they have performed gender throughout their career.

Scream 4: Calling Kevin Williamson. In 2014, I came across an opportunity to write for an arts & entertainment website. To apply, all I had to do was write a film review. I had never written a film review. After a flurry of research on “How to Write a Film Review,” next was deciding the film. I did not have to think long. I would review Scream 4 . I had an encyclopedic knowledge of the Scream series and had lost count of how many times I had watched and rewatched. I considered Wes Craven one of my heroes. The topper? Scream 4 had filmed in my town and many a late night was spent sitting on a sidewalk across the street watching them film. Yes, I would review Scream 4 . Below is my review as sent to the editor in 2014. Spoiler alert – I got the gig and for three years was a blogger for The Script Lab. Happy reading! Dimension Films – 2011 Director: Wes Craven Screenplay: Kevin Williamson, Ehren Kruger (not credited) Scream 4: Calling Kevin Williamson, Calling Kevin Williamson by Michelle Donnelly. With fevered anticipation I arrive at the movie theater on opening night to see Scream 4 , the latest installment of the Scream series. An hour and fifty-one minutes later, I walk out wondering what I have done to drive screenwriter Kevin Williamson away and am confused as to why he wants to destroy the relationship we once had.

  • The Gendered Politics of Hollywood Film Production Culture
The Gendered Politics of Hollywood Film Production Culture Jessica-Angel Nichole Hunter-Thomas Faculty Mentor: Professor Reed Moran Department of Film and Electronic Arts I long personally for the day when that modifier [woman director] is a moot point. I anticipate that day will come. I think we’re close. If ‘The Hurt Locker’ or the attention that it’s getting can make the impossible seem possible to somebody, it’s pretty overwhelming and gratifying. At least we’re heading in the right direction. ——Kathryn Bigelow Los Angeles Times February 2, 2010 Abstract This paper explores the cultural inner workings of the film industry and the factors that contribute to the dearth of women employed “behind the scenes” within the Hollywood Production Culture. The Hollywood Production Culture is defined as the cultural norms, practices, and economic influences functioning within Hollywood. Throughout the history of the film industry, women have been underrepresented in positions of power and influence. These positions of power and influence are labeled Above-The-Line positions and include producers, writers, directors, and cinematographers. This study focuses on finding and analyzing the contributing factors of the gender disparity in Above-The- Line positions. The methodology used to explore the gender disparity within Hollywood Production Culture is an interdisciplinary approach, using textual analysis of industry literature, scholarly studies, and data analysis. 85 Introduction and Background The 2010 Academy Awards was host to a historical event—for the first time in its over 80-year history, the top directorial honor was granted to a woman. Kathryn Bigelow was only the fourth woman to be nominated, and at the 2010 Academy Awards, she became the first ever to win for her Iraqi war film, The Hurt Locker.
