3 4 part 1 TO TrAVEL TO AN invitation exHIBITIONS: THE 5 PETEr THE GrEAT, part 1 A tsar In france. 1717 30 May - 24 September 2017, Grand Trianon

The exhibition called "Peter the Great, a Tsar in France. to adapt certain models for his own empire. During the 1717" will be on display in the Grand Trianon from 30 two months that Peter the Great spent in Regency Paris, May to 24 September 2017. It is dedicated to Tsar Peter his visits and discussions with French people provided the Great's trip in and around Paris in May and June him with food for thought and had an influence on the 1717, and will commemorate the 300th anniversary works he started in 1703 in Saint Petersburg and the of this diplomatic visit. The fruit of exceptional surrounding area. collaboration between the Palace of Versailles and the Hermitage Museum, the exhibition will present over 150 works including paintings, sculptures, decorative artworks and tapestries, as well as plans, medallions, scientific instruments, books and manuscripts, two thirds of which belong to the collections of the prestigious museum in Saint Petersburg.

A member of the house of Romanov and son of Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich (1645-1676) and Nataliya Naryshkina (1651 - 1694), Peter Ist(1672-1725) embarked on a second journey to the West 20 years after the "Grand Embassy" which took him to Europe for the first time in 1697-1698. He arrived in France on 21 April 1717 and remained until 21 June. He stayed at Versailles twice and was accommodated in the Grand Trianon, from 24 to 26 May and from 3 to 11 June 1717.

The exhibition visit will lead visitors step by step through the trip which, although official, nonetheless allowed a certain amount of freedom since Peter Ist, being little accustomed to French Etiquette and with his imposing figure and unpredictability, departed from protocol on multiple occasions. His encounter with Louis XV particularly shocked onlookers when, flouting the ceremonial custom of the court, he spontaneously took the young king, aged 7, in his arms. A number of memorialists, including Saint-Simon, the Marquis Jean-Marc Nattier. de Dangeau and Jean Buvat, left precious testimonies Portrait of Peter I, Tsar of Russia. 1717. Although there were political and economic aims to the stay, such as a project for an alliance with France against Sweden and the signature of a trade agreement, the reforming Tsar and founder of modern Russia most particularly wanted to see the finest of France in order

The exhibition will also throw the spotlight on the Emperor's close circle (family, important officers, the imperial Court) and the Parisian and international societies of the time (artists, scholars, foreign sovereigns etc.) It will show how, from very early on, Napoleon wanted to write his own legend for posterity by commissioning multiple paintings commemorating key moments in his life. Paintings, sculptures and furniture will reveal the wealth and quality of artistic production at the time and will lead visitors in the footsteps of Napoleon Bonaparte, whose unique destiny forever marked the history of France and Europe.

The exhibition will feature famous works such as the portrait of the Count of Toulouse as a Sleeping Putto by Mignard, or the famous "Cup of Hot Chocolate" by Charpentier, alongside lesser-known but just as evocative portraits like that of the Princess of Lamballe by Ducreux or the Duke of Valois in the Cradle by Lépicié, the latter being displayed for the first time since its recent purchase by the Palace of Versailles.

Discovery and creation

In early October 2016 the participants enjoyed an introduction to photography by one of the Palace photographers in Marie-Antoinette's Estate. A few days later they took part in a day in which they discovered entertainment in the Court of Versailles in the 18th century in the Trianon estate. The different forms of entertainment were presented in the form of theatre sketches. It also provided the participants with an opportunity to use what they learned during the photography workshop to create a photographic report of the location and performances.

39 restoration part 5 of the Queen's Guard room Until summer 2017

Situated between the Queen's Staircase and the Royal Table Antechamber, the Queen's Guard Room served as a vestibule in which the officers in charge of the Queen's protection were posted.

The Queen's Guard Room is the only room in the Queen's State Appartments that is yet to undergo essential renovation work on its painted and architectural decoration, which is the reason for its damaged and dilapidated condition.

The paintings on the ceiling are by Noël Coypel. They were originally commissioned for the Jupiter room, which later became the War Room in 1678. The central painting depicts Jupiter accompanied by Justice, Piety and genies symbolising the planet and its four moons. The paintings in the arch evoke Royal Justice through examples from Antiquity, and the spandrels contain other allegories of Justice and Piety.

The works, which began in early May 2015, aim to restore the magnificent polychrome marble panelling to its former glory, it being one of the largest ceremonial decorative installations dating from Louis XIV and still preserved in the Palace. They will also restore harmony and readability to Coypel's paintings, which are currently in poor condition due to mouldy varnish and multiple re-paints. Work on the stucco, lead and gilded wood decoration will complete the restoration of the ceiling.

utilitarian room that made up for the lack of storage in the main library. It was also used as a passageway for accessing the Gilded Room, which is why it has been very simply decorated with no gilding or sculptures. These two contrasting rooms clearly demonstrate the hierarchic principles that governed spaces according to their purpose and location in 18th-century residences.

The library has not seen any real large-scale renovation work since the 19th century, which is the reason for its current state of disrepair. The decoration is showing signs of dilapidation and surface damage (flaking of the gilding and paintwork) as well as more serious damage Marie-Antoinette's library © Château de Versailles, Thomas Garnier such as loosening and cracks in certain panels and in the ceiling, and a few missing sculptural elements. Closet and a Toilette Room. In these spaces, the queen ceased to be a sovereign and became a woman. The boundary is marked by a door positioned behind a wall hanging to the left of the bed. It leads to a small square antechamber with plain white-painted panelling, as was suitable for this type of room.

The Water Closet is simply decorated because the room is dedicated to "cleanliness", but the overall effect is one of elegance. A small alcove indicates the location of the toilet, and two mirrors originally decorated with sculpted and gilded frames add to the brightness of the room. Marie-Antoinette's Toilette Room (in which the Queen got dressed) is one of the prettiest rooms in the Private Apartments because of its elements of sculpted decoration made for the Duchess of Burgundy. The room bears testimony to the freshness and elegance of the renewed decorative style at the end of the reign of Louis XIV, which can be described as early Versailles . The room was originally gilded in order to highlight the delicacy of its decoration. Once restored, it will rediscover its logic and position as one of the Queen's chambers.
