The K-pop Wave: An Economic Analysis Patrick A. Messerlin1 Wonkyu Shin2 (new revision October 6, 2013) ABSTRACT This paper first shows the key role of the Korean entertainment firms in the K-pop wave: they have found the right niche in which to operate— the ‘dance-intensive’ segment—and worked out a very innovative mix of old and new technologies for developing the Korean comparative advantages in this segment. Secondly, the paper focuses on the most significant features of the Korean market which have contributed to the K-pop success in the world: the relative smallness of this market, its high level of competition, its lower prices than in any other large developed country, and its innovative ways to cope with intellectual property rights issues. Thirdly, the paper discusses the many ways the K-pop wave could ensure its sustainability, in particular by developing and channeling the huge pool of skills and resources of the current K- pop stars to new entertainment and art activities. Last but not least, the paper addresses the key issue of the ‘Koreanness’ of the K-pop wave: does K-pop send some deep messages from and about Korea to the world? It argues that it does. The 8th World Music Festival of "la Caixa" Foundation offers a programme consisting of 11 concerts plus a variety of parallel activities such as lectures, master classes and four family concerts. It will take place from 3 to 26 October CaixaForum hosts the 8th World Music Festival, a broad panorama fostering intercultural dialogue through music On Friday 3 October, the Iranian vocal and instrumental group Masters of Persian Music will launch this year’s World Musics Festival, an event organised annually by "la Caixa" Foundation. On this occasion, the Festival will highlight Persian culture, with three concerts that will give us different perspectives on the music and traditions of modern-day Iran, complemented by a lecture programme that will draw us to the past and present of the art and poetry of this age-old tradition. With a spirit unequivocally open to dialogue and to enriching cultural exchange, the Festival will also feature music from such countries as Palestine, Kurdistan and Tibet, with the participation of some of their most charismatic representatives, those who have contributed most to the revival, survival and diffusion of their respective traditions. Neighbouring cultures, such as the Portuguese, or distant ones, such as the Korean, also form part of the Festival, which moreover includes an interesting panorama of present-day African music from three different viewpoints: those of Tunisia, Mali and Angola. In addition to the aforementioned lecture programme, the Festival will be complemented by, among other parallel activities, a special concert by musicians from around the world who reside in Catalonia, three master classes in traditional Arabic singing, and four family concerts. -

Music of Korea
Namdo Japga medley Namdo is a province in the southwest part of Korea, and Japga refers to the folk songs performed by trained professional singers. This musical style is influenced by other folk music genres in Ko- rea such as pansori and gasa. Namdo Japga is based on the Sinawi mode (also known as Yujkabegi mode). ABOUT THE ARTISTS Beall Concert Hall Sunday afternoon 3:00 p.m. May 2, 2010 Yusun Kim is a leading gayageum (plucked zither) performer in Korea. She was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1980. She began her formal education at Gaywon High School of the Arts and con- tinued studying at Ewha Woman’s University where she received BA and MA degrees in gayageum performance, and is currently WORLD MUSIC SERIES pursuing her doctorate there. She has performed at many music presents venues and festivals in Korea, including the Korean Composers’ Association’s Seoul Composition Festival and the Korean Compos- ers’ Union’s National New Music Exposition, among many others. MUSIC OF KOREA She has also appeared at international concert venues in the U.S., Poland, France, China, Hong Kong, and Japan as a gayageum and a featuring guest artists janggu (drum) artist. She won the Grand Prize in the 2002 Korean Young Performance Arts Competition and the 2004 National Tradi- Yusun Kim, gayageum tional Competition. Currently, she is the principal gayageum player Hyerim Choi, ajaeng in the Gayageum Ensemble Chocolate, and teaches gayageum at Ewha Woman’s University, Gyeongin University of Education, and Dondeok Woman’s University. -

All rights reserved. 110 The Review of Korean Studies Introduction During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Joseon1 Korea (1392- 1910), biographies were written of Ming migrants who had entered Joseon as deserters from the Ming armies during the 1592-1598 Imjin War or as refugees who fled to Joseon in the decade following the 1618 commencement of the Manchu invasion of Liaodong and Liaoxi. Despite the fact that these migrants were not welcomed at the time by the Joseon court, they were declared by the Joseon court in the eighteenth century to be Ming loyalists who had fled to Joseon to escape the Manchu Qing. As such, during the reigns of Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800) and Sunjo (r. 1800-1834), they were provided with hagiographic biographies which were anthologized in collections official and unofficial, in which these deserters and refugees were declared exemplars of the Ming loyalism that had become part of the official narrative of the Joseon court. At the same time, the descendants of these migrants were raised from their relatively humble “submitting-foreigner” status to the much more prestigious “imperial subject” status. This in turn brought the possibility of positions in the military bureaucracy and a role in court-sponsored Ming loyalist rituals. Biography, as a branch of history, has been attracting renewed interest, as is attested by a recent round-table published in the American Historical Review. -

Illinois State University RED NOTE new music festival March 26th – March 29th, 2018 co-directors , distinguished guest composer , distinguished guest composer , guest performers CALENDAR OF EVENTS MONDAY, MARCH 26TH 8 pm, Center for the Performing Arts The Festival opens with a concert featuring the Illinois State University Wind Symphony and Illinois State University choruses. Professor Anthony Marinello conducts the ISU Wind Symphony in a performance of the winning work in this year’s Composition Competition for Wind Ensemble, Patrick Lenz’s Pillar of Fire. The Wind Symphony also performs guest composer William Bolcom’s Concerto for Soprano Saxophone with ISU faculty Paul Nolen, and the world premiere of faculty composer Martha Horst’s work Who Has Seen the Wind? The ISU Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers, conducted by Dr. Karyl Carlson, perform the winning piece in the Composition Competition for Chorus, Wind on the Island by Michael D’Ambrosio, as well as William Bolcom’s Song for Saint Cecilia’s Day. TUESDAY, MARCH 27TH 7:30 pm, Kemp Recital Hall ISU students and faculty present a program of works by featured guest composers Gabriela Lena Frank and William Bolcom. The concert will also include the winning work in this year’s Composition Competition for Chamber Ensemble, Downloads, by Jack Frerer. Shin JOSEON MUMMIES BEFORE MUMMY STUDIES BEGAN IN KOREA Mi Kyung Song1, Dong Hoon Shin2 1 Department of Clothing Science, Seoul Women’s University, Seoul, South Korea 2 Department of Anatomy, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea ABSTRACT Mummy studies in Korea are instrumental in reconstructing the health and disease status of pre-modern Joseon peoples using firm scientific evidence. However, this scientific approach to such investigations in Korea is a relatively new discipline which began only within the last decade. Previous studies on Joseon tombs and their contents were performed exclusively by dress histo- rians because most of the artefacts recoverable from Joseon tombs were tex- tiles. In this report, we examine some of the excavation records left by dress historians in order to elucidate the approximate number and preservation status of Korean mummies discovered prior to the advent of their scientific investigation. Keywords: Korea, mummy, mummy studies, Joseon Dynasty, clothing, history INTRODUCTION Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910 CE) mummies are an essential resource for the scientifi c study of the health and disease statuses of pre-modern Korean peo- ple. Although the exact mechanisms of mummifi cation is still not completely understood, it occurred over the course of several hundred years of burial in a specifi c type of tomb encapsulated by a lime-soil mixture barrier (the LSMB tomb). Considering the lack of any formalized embalming techniques practiced during the Joseon period, the relatively high state of preservation of most of the mummies is surprising (17). -
