    The Royal Thomian Derby (Or the Royal Thomian Match) by Renu Manamendra (Life Member - Royal College Union and the Group of '76) Reproduced from the Daily News The most looked forward to sporting and social event in the Calendar of present and past students of the two most renowned high schools in Sri Lanka, the Royal versus S. Thomas' Cricket Match, is played over 3 days in the month of March in the city of Colombo. S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia, a private Anglican school has about 2,500 boys on roll, while Royal college Colombo, a government-run non-denominational school accommodates approximately 8,000, making it the largest school in the country. Origins of School Cricket in Ceylon The early origins of S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia date ba ck to 1851 when it was located in Mutwal, Colombo. It is the first Ceylonese school to play cricket - beginning 1864 against the Small Pass Cricket Club in Colombo. This is also the first recorded instance of a cricket match between two Ceylonese teams pla yed in Ceylon. S. Thomas' was represented in this historic match by G. A. Edward, W. De. Livera, K. Banda, S. H. Pereira, L. Sepion, B. A. Senanayake, C. de Silva, L. T. Nolan, E. de Hoedt, H. M. Fernando and A. Perera. As there was no other school playin g cricket at the time, from 1864 to 1877, S. Thomas' played against the clubs and other teams that were in existence in Colombo, Negombo and Kalutara, including the elitist European dominated Colombo Cricket Club.

    SRI LANKA CRICKET CODE OF TOURNAMENT RULES AND REGULATIONS These rules are approved and adopted by the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket at the meeting held on 18th November 2017, by virtue of the powers vested in it in terms of clause l3(a) of the Constitution of Sri Lanka Cricket and shall be in full force with effect from 18th November 2017 A Code to regulate Domestic Tournaments Conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket PART I OBJECTS AND APPLICATION 1. Application of this Code shall be- (a) These rules shall be cited as the Domestic Tournament Rules (hereinafter sometimes may called and referred to as “The Rules”) of Sri Lanka Cricket (hereinafter called and referred to as “SLC”), and shall be observed and/or adhered to by all Participants specified hereto. (b) These rules shall be applicable to Any Tournament played within the territory of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka that is organized, structured, planned, conducted, supervised, sponsored, held, convened or authorized by Sri Lanka Cricket.     List of Contributors Lucian C. Arulpragasam was born in (then) Ceylon. He graduated from the University of Ceylon in 1948 in Economics and Political Science and was appointed Assistant Lecturer in Political Science at the same University. He joined the Ceylon Civil Service in 1951, where he worked for ten years in the fields of agrarian reform and agricultural policy/planning for the agriculture sector. In 1962, he joined the FAO where, as Regional Officer for Asia/Far East resident in the region, and later as Chief Economist for Asia/Far East at FAO Headquarters (Rome), he was able to visit and work in every country in Asia for a period of over 20 years, observing also their political developments. Later, as Chief of the Agrarian Reform Service he also covered other countries in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. After his retirement from FAO, he worked as a consultant for many UN agencies and authored many of their publications. Although living abroad, he has visited Sri Lanka at least once or twice each year over the past 50 years, which has enabled him to keep in touch with the economic and political developments in his own country. Mr Arulpragasam now lives in retirement in the Philippines. Radhika Coomaraswamy was Under Secretary General of the United Nations and Special Representative of the Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflict 2006-2012. Before that she was the Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Commission on Violence Against Women 1994-2003. In Sri Lanka she was a Director of the International Center for Ethnic Studies 1982-2006 and Chairperson of the Sri Lankan Human Rights Commission 2003-2006.
