HISTORY Torridon House is on land which once formed part of the Beinn Damph Estate which ran from Applecross in the south to nearly Gairloch in the north. In the later part of the nineteenth century the entire estate was purchased from the then owner, the Duke of Leeds, by the 4th Earl of Lovelace who set about investing in the estate creating a number of fine houses, including Beinn Damph House (now the Torridon Hotel). The 5th Earl then added Torridon Estate to the property and the family moved from Beinn Damph House in the 1960s as the new public road was thought to be too close and they settled in Torridon House. The house is now lived in by the 5th Earl and his wife. TORRIDON HOUSE Torridon Estate was bought in the 1950s by the 4th Earl of Lovelace from lands belonging to the Lord of the Isles and which included one of the best deer forests in the west Highlands. The house holds a prominent position on the north shore of Upper Loch Torridon. The house was built in around 1876 using the famous Torridon red sandstone and was designed for family living as well as to support sporting parties during the shooting and fishing seasons. The house has been remodelled over the years, but its layout remains central around the magnificent reception rooms. All three lead from the impressive pine panelled reception hall, including a lovely library with fully fitted bookshelves, a beautiful drawing room with decorative ceiling, plaster work and cornice, the most elegant fire place and spectacular views across the gardens. The dining room is situated on the east side of the house, but is well positioned with a pantry and kitchen nearby. There is a good sized study and gun room as well as a billiard room. A covered courtyard at the back has a number of useful rooms off including the laundry, work shop, larders and staff room. An extensive basement provides masses of storage, has a boiler room, wine cellar and a fully fitted bar. The bedroom accommodation is on the first and second floors. The master suite has bedroom, sitting room, dressing room and bathroom and there are 17 further bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. There is also a nursery and playroom on the top floor.

GARDEN AND GROUNDS The immediate gardens around the house are very special indeed. Set out when the house was built it is now highlighted by magnificent native trees, which have framed a large front lawn sloping gently down towards the River Corrie. There are deep herbaceous borders and a small rock garden.
