Other pathogens, notably influenza A (H7N9), Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus and Nipah virus, have demonstrated their capacity to become global threats. In parallel, the increasing incidence of multidrug-resistant pathogens has become a pressing global health threat that challenges both the human and animal health sectors. The prospect of a post-antibiotic era prompted a high-level consultation on antimicrobial resistance at the 2016 United Nations General Assembly. It was only the fourth such occasion Member States convened and issued a declaration associated with a developing health crisis. -

POLICY BRIEF Investing in One Health A concerted approach to address shared risks to humans, animals, and the environment Health disasters like Ebola in West Africa, H5N1 Avian Influenza in Asia and Europe, and Zika virus in Latin America have significantly harmed both health and economies. Many of these countries afflicted by diseases of pandemic potential also face a persistent burden of endemic diseases such as rabies, Lassa virus, and brucellosis, and are challenged by bacteria increasingly resistant to antibiotics. Zoonotic diseases (transmitted between animals and humans) account for over a billion human cases and a million deaths annually. These disease threats compound poverty and obstruct development. Ecosystem alteration, climate change, and inadequate biosecurity are also disproportionately present in the developing world, and exacerbate existing and emergent disease risk. Strong, environmentally considerate, public health systems are needed to prevent, reduce, and manage risks to humans, animals, and the environment and are critical to achieve the World Bank’s twin goals of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity. The One Health concept recognizes these connections and promotes coordination to better understand and manage risks. This approach can help countries achieve progress on national and global priorities includ- ing poverty alleviation, economic growth, food security, health, and well-being, toward achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One Health: What It Is and Why It Matters Public health challenges at the human-animal-environment interfaces are inherently multi-sectoral, and therefore warrant whole-of-society solutions. The One Health concept recognizes the connections between humans, animals, and the environment and promotes coordination to better understand and manage risks. -

Coronavirus (COVID-19) and wildlife trafficking The ongoing Covid crisis has brought renewed attention to the global problem of wildlife trafficking. The World Health Organization has determined that COVID-19, just like SARS, Ebola, Bird Flu, and MERS, originated from an animal. In a recently published Nature article, scientists claim that smuggling of pangolins in South-East Asia could be one of the triggers of the current crisis, as these smuggled animals carried viruses closely related to coronavirus. In fact, pangolins are the most-commonly illegally trafficked animal in South East Asia, used both as food and in traditional medicine. The OECD Task Force on Countering Illicit Trade has been looking at the threat of wildlife trafficking. In a 2019 report The Illegal Wildlife Trade in Southeast Asia, the OECD has reported that, after pangolins, the other most traded illegal wildlife products in South East Asia were good such as carved ivory, big cats, rhino horn and various live animals. The Task Force finds that several complex trade routes are used to smuggle wildlife products such as pangolins, and that Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam are the key transit countries for these illegal wildlife trade products. Illegally smuggled wildlife products arrive into the Southeast Asian region via air and sea, and subsequently transit through complex and organized routing processes. Poachers sell pangolins mostly in regional markets in Viet Nam and China where their consumption as food is appreciated, and their scales are used for medical purposes. -

I am pleased to share the first edition of our inflight magazine for 2020, filled with fantastic milestones recorded over the past three months of 2019, which was also one of the busiest periods at Air Seychelles. Following the delivery of our first A320neo aircraft in August 2019, and after having successfully completed three months of flying, the operations control centre team conducted a survey to evaluate the general performance of the newest acquisition. Completing 410 sectors as from 6 August up to 4 December 2019 overall, the aircraft on average completed 100 flights per month, produced 20 percent fuel savings per flight, in addition to generating 50 percent reduced noise footprint and nitrogen oxides (NOx). This amazing result must not go unnoticed as the aviation industry globally is under considerable pressure over the issue of carbon emissions and its impact on climate change. Today, I am proud of the contribution Air Seychelles is making towards sustainable development and we cannot wait for the arrival of our second A320neo in April 2020. The exciting month of November 2019 was marked with the introduction of our new non-stop weekly service between Seychelles and Tel Aviv. Being onboard the inaugural Tel Aviv – Seychelles flight, which was 100 percent full and bearing witness to the excitement of the guests as they boarded the aircraft was definitely a historical milestone for the national airline. -
