The Union Daily Times/Union, S.C., Friday, March 2, 2012 9 The Dixie Youth Draft opens this Saturday Tiffany Grady-Hudgins Sports Editor A draft day has been organized by the Dixie Youth board of directors and president Tommy Ford for youth who are interested in playing Dixie Youth baseball. The event will take place this Saturday at the Buffalo Ball Park (registration times are listed below). The draft will be set up like a practice where the players will throw, hit and field while the Dixie Youth coaches observe. After observing the players on the field, the coaches will draft the players to a team, much like a professional baseball draft. The purpose of draft, as explained by Ford, is to keep the teams equal throughout the league, with no one dominant team. Ford also said that everybody will be drafted with no cuts and that each child who signs up will play baseball for Dixie Youth. After the draft, the players will begin practicing with their teams on different fields in the county and will play at the Buffalo Ball Park and also the Timken Complex. At end of the season, All Star teams are picked by the coaches. There will be three teams — Minors (8-10 Photo submitted years), Majors (11-12 years) and Dixie Boys (13-14 Members of the MES Green Team help collect products to be recycled at the school each week. years).
