By Jennifer M. Fogel a Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
A MODERN FAMILY: THE PERFORMANCE OF “FAMILY” AND FAMILIALISM IN CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION SERIES by Jennifer M. Fogel A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in The University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Regina Morantz-Sanchez Associate Professor Bambi L. Haggins, Arizona State University © Jennifer M. Fogel 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe my deepest gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee – Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Dr. Bambi L. Haggins, and Dr. Regina Morantz-Sanchez, who each contributed their time, expertise, encouragement, and comments throughout this entire process. These women who have mentored and guided me for a number of years have my utmost respect for the work they continue to contribute to our field. I owe my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Amanda D. Lotz, who patiently refused to accept anything but my best work, motivated me to be a better teacher and academic, praised my successes, and will forever remain a friend and mentor. Without her constructive criticism, brainstorming sessions, and matching appreciation for good television, I would have been lost to the wolves of academia. One does not make a journey like this alone, and it would be remiss of me not to express my humble thanks to my parents and sister, without whom seven long and lonely years would not have passed by so quickly. They were both my inspiration and staunchest supporters. Without their tireless encouragement, laughter, and nurturing this dissertation would not have been possible. -

Ink Master: Angels': New, All-Women Series Is "Inspiring," Showrunner Says by Amanda Buckle June 2017
https://mic.com/articles/178923/ink-master-angels-new-all-women-series-is-inspiring- showrunner-says#.q1nb1r7bX 'Ink Master: Angels': New, all-women series is "inspiring," showrunner says By Amanda Buckle June 2017 Ink Master alums Ryan Ashley, Kelly Doty, Nikki Simpson and Gia Rose are here to stay. The tattoo artists proved to be top competitors in season eight of the Spike reality series and in March, the network announced that the women would be returning for their own one-hour special, Ink Master: Angels. On Monday Spike revealed that the special has now been turned into a series. Ink Master: Angels will consist of 10 episodes and debut this fall. The series will follow Ryan, Kelly, Nikki and Gia as they "travel the country and go head-to- head with some of America's most talented tattoo artists." The twist is that the competitors facing the four women will be fighting for a spot on season 10 of Ink Master, which will debut in 2018. The announcement doesn't come as a big surprise as Ink Master pulled in a 57% female audience for its eighth season — the largest number of female viewers in franchise history. The eighth season also crowned Ryan Ashley as its first female winner. For Ink Master showrunner and executive producer Andrea Richter, the idea to bring the women back came together "pretty quickly." "It's interesting having been there and filmed them for the first time and seeing all of them meet for the first time and bond," Richter said. "I think it was an obvious choice. -

A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF TELEVISION’S LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER IMAGES. words and images matter NETWORK RESPONSIBILITY INDEX TABLE OF CONTENTS • TABLE OF CONTENTS TK EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 3 ABC 8 CBS 10 CW 12 FOX 14 NBC 16 ABC FAMILY 18 FX 20 HBO 22 HISTORY 24 MTV 26 SHOWTIME 28 TBS 31 TLC 32 TNT 34 USA 36 MORE CABLE NETWORKS 38 BIOS 41 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The GLAAD Network Responsibility Index (NRI) is an evaluation of the quantity and quality of images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgen- der (LGBT) people on television. It is intended to serve as a road map toward increasing fair, accurate, and inclusive LGBT media representations. GLAAD has seen time and again how images of multi-dimensional gay and transgender people on television have the power to change public percep- tions. The Pulse of Equality Survey, commissioned by GLAAD and conducted by Harris Interactive, confirmed a growing trend toward greater acceptance among the American public. Among the 19% who reported that their feelings toward gay and lesbian people have become more favorable over the past 5 years, 34% cited “seeing gay or lesbian characters on television” as a contrib- uting factor. In fact when Vice President Joe Biden endorsed marriage equality this year, he cited the NBC sitcom Will & Grace as one of the factors that led to a better understanding of the LGBT community by the American public. As diverse LGBT images in the media become more prevalent, the general public becomes exposed to the truth of the LGBT community: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans are parents and teachers, law enforce- ment and soldiers, high school students and loving elderly couples. -
Brand/Rebrand: Spike
Brand/Rebrand: Spike 04.02.2015 It's happening: The unofficial network for guys is turning into Spike, a general entertainment network for "The Ones to Watch." Even though Spike flipped the switch on its network rebrand rather suddenly at this year's upfront presentation, its overall brand transition has been in the works for almost two years now. At its March 3 upfront, Spike TV dropped the "TV," introduced a new logo and tagline, and dedicated itself even moreso to original programming that men and women could equally enjoy. Welcome to the new #Spike: http://t.co/hQ6o39XXFI pic.twitter.com/KwgPl3APZ6 - SPIKE (@spike) March 3, 2015 Back when Spike TV launched in 2003, the young, male-skewed network targeted an underserved audience who was leaving television in favor of video games, according to Spike's SVP of marketing and brand creative, Terry Minogue. So for its first decade or so, Spike was a place where those demographics could find programming that related to them. "Spike was sort of the loud guy in the bar," said Minogue, who says that while its branding served its purpose in its time, it became "a bit too exclusive for men. It had a place at the time with really high brand awareness, but that male audience has shifted." Now, 12 years later, the network has found that what once was the place to "Get More Action" needed a turnaround. "You look at the old spike branding and it feels right for that audience," said Minogue, "but as we evolved, we definitely needed a new look." So Spike began emphasizing programming to its lineup that encouraged co-viewing, according to Minogue, such as Bar Rescue and Ink Master, and the channel saw a huge uptick in female viewers.
