*3 interesting facts about each Wonder Ancient wonders of the world WHAT ARE THE ANCIENT WONDERS OF THE WORLD ? The The Ancient Wonders of the World are 7 amazing architectural achievements from the ancient world. Only 1 of the Ancient Wonders still exists today: The Great Pyramid of Giza. All of the others were destroyed in the distant past.

WHO DECIDED ON WHAT THE ANCIENT WONDERS ARE? Around 400 BC (about 2400 years ago), the Ancient Greeks began to travel. As they did, they wrote about all of the amazing things that they saw. About 100 BC (2100 years ago) the Greek historian (in the picture) had made a list of the 7 most wonderful monuments they had seen. This is the frst list of The Ancient Wonders of the World. There are only 7 ancient wonders on the list because the Ancient Greeks thought number seven was special and magical.

The Statue of Zeus The Statue of Zeus was a giant seated statue of the Greek god Zeus. Zeus was the god of sky and thunder. The statue was created in Olympia, Greece by the sculptor Phidias in 435 B.C. It was made from ivory and gold with many jewels and was over 12 meters tall. It was destroyed by fre between there years 400 and 500 A.D. The Great Pyramid of Giza The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and largest pyramid. It is also the oldest of the Ancient Wonders by a long way! The Great Pyramid is also the only Ancient Wonder that still exists today. It was built in Giza in the country we now call between 2584 and 2561 B.C. The Ancient Egyptians built the Great Pyramid as a tomb for the pharaoh Khufu. It is 147 meters tall and was build out of 2.3 million blocks of stone. There are many rooms and passages build inside the pyramid.

The HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were located the country we know as Iraq near Al Hillah. They were build around 600 B.C by Nebuchadnezzar II, a Babalonian king. It is said he built the gardens to please his wife, Amytis of Media, because she missed the trees and plants of her home. We don’t know if the Hanging Gardens were actually real as no actual evidence of them has ever been found.

The The Temple of Artemis was in the modern country of Turkey in the town of Selçuk. The temple was built by the Ancient Greeks and the Lydians around 550 B.C for the goddess Artemis (their goddess of hunting). It was destroyed by arson in 356 B.C and rebuilt. The Temple was closed by Christians who did not belive in the Greek gods. It was destroyed by Goths (a Germanic tribe) in a raid around 262 B.C. Mausoleum at Halicarnassus The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was a tomb built about 351 B.C in what we now call in Turkey. It was built for , who was a Persian Governer and Artemisia II of . They were married but also brother and sister! The Mausoleum was 45 meters tall and the sides were decorated by sculptures. It is thought that the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was destroyed by an earthquake sometime between 1100 and 1200 A.D.

The Colossus of Rhodes The Colossus of Rhodes was a huge statue of Greek god of sun, . It was built at the harbour in the Greek city of Rhodes in 280 B.C by Chares of . It was 33 meters tall and built to celebrate Rhodes’ victory over Cyprus in a war. It was destroyed in the great earthquake of 226 B.C when it snapped at the knees and fell, having only stood for 54 years.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria The Lighthouse of Alexandria was built around 280 B.C on the island of Pharos, Alexandria in Egypt. It was built as a lighthouse and had a giant mirror to refect sunlight in the day with a fre lit on it at night. It was between 115 and 145 meters tall and was the tallest building in the world for hundreds of years. Over time, it was damaged by several earthquakes and fnally ruined by one in 1303 A.D. Ancient wonders of the World Vocabulary Ancient - Ancient is something that took place or belonged in the very distant past.

Archetecture - Archetecture is the planning and creation of buildings or momuments.

Arson - Arson is when somebody sets fre to something on purpose.

B.C - BC means Before Christ. It is the time before Jesus Christ was born in the Christian religion. The year 0 is when Jesus is said to have been born. Any time before that is called BC. So 100BC is 100 years before Jesus was born. 1BC would be 1 year before Jesus was born.

Christian - Christians believe in the religion of Christianity.

Diodorus Siculus - Diodorus Siculus was a Greek historian who wrote many history books around 2100 years ago. 15 of his books still survive. He made the frst known list of the Ancient Wonders of the World.

Greek - Greek is a way to describe something or someone from the country of Greece.

Harbour - A harbour is a place where ships can come in to the land to unload or stay.

Mausoleum - A mausoleum is an amazing tomb - a place where someone is buried.

Monument - A monument is a building or statue that represents an important person or event.

Pharaoh - A pharaoh is an Ancient Egyptian king or queen.

Sculpture - A sculpture is a statue that is created by an artist called a sculptor.

Tomb - A tomb is a building where someone is buried.

Wonder - A Wonder is something that is amazing or marvellous to see.
