After Fronting the Sex Pistols, John Lydon Formed Post-Punk Originators Public Image Ltd (Pil)
After fronting the Sex Pistols, John Lydon formed post-punk originators Public Image Ltd (PiL). Widely regarded as one of the most innovative bands of all time, their music and vision earned them 5 UK Top 20 Singles and 5 UK Top 20 Albums. With a shifting line-up and unique sound – fusing rock, dance, folk, pop and dub – Lydon guided the band from their debut album ‘First Issue’ in 1978 through to 1992’s ‘That What Is Not’, before a 17 year hiatus. Lydon reactivated PiL in 2009, releasing the critically acclaimed album ‘This is PiL’ in 2012. The band continues to challenge and thrive and is set to release the new album ‘What The World Needs Now…’ in September 2015. Public Image Ltd Are: John Lydon: Vocals (1978-Present) After fronting the Sex Pistols, John Lydon formed Public Image Ltd in 1978. PiL went onto blend a variety of different musical styles over three decades before returning in 2009. Outside of PiL John has released several solo records and collaborations. He also brings quality TV to the masses. Lu Edmonds: Guitar & Misc (1986-88) (2009-Present) Multi instrumentalist and former guitarist in The Damned Lu joined PiL in 1986 recording and playing on the album Happy? and co-writing the album 9 adding yet another dimension to the PiL sound. Lu is also associated with a variety of eclectic and acoustic bands including The Mekons and Yat-Kha. Bruce Smith: Drums (1986-90) (2009-Present) Former drummer in The Pop Group and The Slits became percussionist for PiL also in 1986 playing and recording on the albums Happy? and 9. -

But only in the last 20 years have the artists and their work attracted serious study in their own right. Rather than being seen as attractive but essentially incidental illustrations for the study of British society and politics, political and social caricatures are now analysed in depth as both a reflection of, and sometimes a formative influence upon, public opinion. Increasingly their propagandist role as tools in the hands of national government or opposition is recognised. The creators of what are often highly sophisticated and intricate images are now regarded as serious artists, and the importance of their place in the political and social world of the time recognised. The setting up of a national centre in Britain for the study of cartoons and caricature at the University of Kent at Canterbury (see http://library.kent.ac.uk/cartoons [2]) and the major James Gillray exhibition at the Tate Gallery in 2001 (see http://www.tate.org.uk/britain/exhibitions/gillray/ [3]) have set the agenda, while Diana Donald's The Age of Caricature: Satirical Prints in the Reign of George III (New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1996) is currently the seminal text. -

SPRING 2011 THE BELL Although the musical archives of the world have yielded up their fair A CAMBRIDGE share of surprising ‘lost’ or forgotten early works by great MASS composers, few of these discoveries might be regarded with more wonder than the Mass of 1899 by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Submitted for the Cambridge degree of Doctor of Music shortly after his 27th birthday, and lasting around three quarters of an hour, it was by far the largest of the composer’s pieces to predate A Sea Symphony of 1909, and in any context would Photograph of Trinity College, Cambridge © Andrew Dunn be a remarkable achievement. In a sense, it was neither lost nor forgotten, merely overlooked for more than a century – though that omission is in itself remarkable, for the Mass was in Michael Kennedy’s catalogue of the composer’s work, and the score preserved in Cambridge University Library. It was there in 2007 that Alan Tongue first set eyes on it and, galvanised by the 155 pages of autograph manuscript, resolved to obtain permission from The Vaughan Williams Charitable Trust to undertake a transcription. There were no parts, for the piece had never been performed, and in places there were wrong notes, incorrect transpositions and missing dynamics that would surely have been corrected in due course by a professional copyist. Nonetheless, the composer’s intentions were entirely clear, as was the ambitious scope of the piece, which significantly extends our understanding of Vaughan Williams’ artistic development. Given the context, the title A Cambridge Mass (for SATB soloists, double chorus and orchestra) immediately suggested itself, and not just on account of Vaughan Williams receiving the university degree. -

The effervescence of New York's underground scene was contagious and spread to England with a 1976 tour of the Ramones that was artfully manipulated to start a fad (after the "100 Club Festival" of september 1976 that turned British punk-rock into a national phenomenon). In the USA the punk subculture was a combination of subterranean record industry and of teenage angst. In Britain it became a combination of fashion and of unemployment. Music in London had been a component of fashion since the times of the Swinging London (read: Rolling Stones). Punk-rock was first and foremost a fad that took over the Kingdom by storm. However, the social component was even stronger than in the USA: it was not only a generic malaise, it was a specific catastrophe. The iron rule of prime minister Margaret Thatcher had salvaged Britain from sliding into the Third World, but had caused devastation in the social fabric of the industrial cities, where unemployment and poverty reached unprecedented levels and racial tensions were brooding. -

BALBOA STUDIO FILMOGRAPHY INTRODUCTION This work presents filmography data from the Balboa studio, owned and operated by the Horkheimer Brothers at Long Beach, California, from June 1913 to March 1918. It is divided into four sections : 1. Filmography classified by title 2. Filmography classified by US exchange 3. List of actors, with associated filmography 4. List of directors, with associated filmography. The research was conducted within the following archives, which I gratefully thank : Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal (Paris) British Film Institute Library (London) Free Library (Philadelphia) Library of Congress (Washington) Long Beach Public Library (Long Beach) Margaret Herrick Library (Beverly Hills) New York Public Performing Arts Library (New York City) Some of the consulted periodicals were English, most of them were American. Since the Balboa studio was fully independent and without any long-term connection with a large US exchange company, it must be emphasized that some pictures, including features, never got a national release. Some of them were presented in England, but not in the US, some others probably only knew a limited and regional release. For example, this is the case of the first five-reel feature directed by Henry King, The Brand of Man (1915), totally unknown in every periodical listed below, and therefore also unknown from the AFI Catalog. It is nevertheless certain that all the pictures mentioned in this document had actually been produced. Two picture mentioned by the AFI Catalog (The Policewoman and The Explorer) have not been included here, because most probably these projects never reached the production phase. The list of actors which is presented here included every man, woman and child known to have been connected with Balboa at any time during their carrier. -

Most viewers will probably agree that there is nothing really comparable in the contemporary world of political cartooning to the drafting skill and flamboyance of these single-panel graphics, which appeared in such popular periodicals as Puck and Judge. This early outburst of what we refer to today as clash-of-civilizations thinking did not go unchallenged, however. The turn of the century also witnessed emergence of articulate anti- imperialist voices worldwide—and this movement had its own powerful wing of incisive graphic artists. In often searing Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem “The White graphics, they challenged the complacent Man’s Burden” was published in 1899, during a propagandists for Western expansion by high tide of British and American rhetoric addressing (and illustrating) a devastating about bringing the blessings of “civilization and question about the savage wars of peace.
