During the course of the research and writing, many individuals and institutions have given much needed assistance and encouragement: Dr. Jackie Grobler supervised and directed the study with great skill and energy and has also been a supportive friend. His critical reading of the text provided rich insights. Thanks to him for his unfailing support at all stages of the study. His house had become my third home away from my house and work office. Professor Ray Silverman of the University of Michigan [UM], Ann Arbor, provided valuable mentorship and guidance during the nascent stage of the work and encouraged my inquiry into American commemorative history for comparative purposes. Professor Franz provided wise council and material on the early relationship between the Boers and the indigenous Africans of the Transvaal in the late 1830s and early 1840s as he continued to take interest in my research. I am grateful to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, for the African Scholarship Exchange Program support that made this study possible. The African Studies Center (ASC) International Institute under the directorship of Professor Kelly Askew provided a much needed six months scholarship (February to July) to the UM, Ann Arbor in 2009 during which I was exposed to rich material on the subject of commemoration and construction of collective memories. The ASC organized that I continued to receive much needed material until February 2014. Kate Christlieb of the interlibrary loan section at Hatcher Library of the UM played a crucial role in ensuring that I received material as expected. Thanks also to the University of Pretoria [UP] for the initial sponsorship that kick started research on this project. In the same vein, my thanks go to Ms Alett Nel, the History Librarian in the Merensky Library of the UP for her consistent assistance. I owe special thanks to the families of sculptors Harry Johnson and the late Phil Minnaar for their support and generosity. Harry Johnson shared remembrances of his youth and mother. The Johnson family welcomed me and my wife to their farm and studio in Groblersdal. For at least two days the family hosted us and Harry not only ushered me to his studio, but also exposed me to some of his primary operations, that also informed this study. Both his wife and son shared with us during a braai one evening, the family story that chronicled the history of the sculptor‘s career. Phil Minnaar and his wife also welcomed me to their studio in ix Garsfontein, Pretoria East. The Minnaars also shared not only a family scrapbook that chronicled the history of Phil‘s career, but their friendship as well. The theoretical approach to this study is embedded in neo- functionalism. In order to illustrate this, the South African province, the Limpopo Province is used as an illustrative case study. In particular, the study will analyse the role of the International Relations Unit (IRU) within the Office of the Premier (OtP) in the Limpopo Province as a case study. Limpopo is the main focus of this study because it, inter alia, borders on three sovereign states (Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe) which place the province in a good position to engage in international relations, mutual intentions and friendly relations with its neighbouring and other distant countries. The results of this study is that provinces have become important foreign policy and international relations actors in the area of low politics; however the national government remains as the main actor in the international relations and foreign policy making process.

    THE HISTORY OF THE PIETERSBURG [POLOKWANE] JEWISH COMMUNITY by CHARLOTTE WIENER Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the subject JUDAICA at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SUPERVISOR: MR CEDRIC GINSBERG NOVEMBER 2006 SUMMARY Jews were present in Pietersburg [Polokwane] from the time of its establishment in 1868. They came from Lithuania, England and Germany. They were attracted by the discovery of gold, land and work opportunities. The first Jewish cemetery was established on land granted by President Paul Kruger in 1895. The Zoutpansberg Hebrew Congregation, which included Pietersburg and Louis Trichardt was established around 1897. In 1912, Pietersburg founded its own congregation, the Pietersburg Hebrew Congregation. A Jewish burial society, a benevolent society and the Pietersburg-Zoutpansberg Zionist Society was formed. A communal hall was built in 1921 and a synagogue in 1953. Jews contributed to the development of Pietersburg and held high office. There was little anti-Semitism. From the 1960s, Jews began moving to the cities. The communal hall and minister’s house were sold in 1994 and the synagogue in 2003. Piet en sy mense van die Diamantstreek aangebied is. Die tablo is geneem uit die verhoogstuk "Ons vir jou Suid-Afrika" en is briljant aangebied - almal was selfs aangetrek in histories-korrekte uitrustings! Na die boodskap van Mnr. Frans Jooste van die Kommandokorps is die oggend by Coligny afgesluit met die sing van "Die lied van jong Suid-Afrika" en almal het na Lichtenburg vertrek vir die verrigtinge daar. Daar is bymekaargekom by die standbeeld van Genl. De la Rey waar almal, te midde van groot belangstelling van die plaaslike bevolking, met trots die aankoms van die ossewa by die standbeeld toegekyk het. Na ’n kranslegging deur die Leier, Mnr. Steyn von Rönge, die sprekers en lede van die publiek, is Professor A.W.G. Raath aan die woord gestel om almal bietjie meer van die geskiedenis van die Rebellie te vertel.

An Exiled Namibian Activist’s Perspective; with an introduction by Professor Mburumba Kerina, Johannesburg, Porcupine Press, 2014. 376 pages, appendices, photographs, index of names. ISBN: 978-1-920609-71-9. The article argues that Long Road to Liberation , being a rich, diverse, uneven memoir of an exiled Namibian activist, offers a sobering and critical account of the limits of liberation politics, of the legacies of a protracted struggle to bring Namibia to independence and of the imprint the struggle left on the political terrain of the independent state. But, it remains the perspective of an individual activist, who on account of his personal experiences and long absence from the country of his birth, at times, paints a fairly superficial picture of many internal events in the country. The protracted diplomatic-, political- and liberation struggle that culminated in the independence of Namibia in March 1990, has attracted a crop of publications written from different perspectives. This has produced many competing narratives. It would be fair to say that many of the books published over the last decade or so, differ in their range, quality and usefulness to researchers and the reading public at large. This observation also holds for memoirs, a genre of writing that is most demanding, for it requires brutal honesty, the ability to truthfully recall and engage with events that can traverse several decades.
