    1 CHAPTER 1 GENERAL INTRODUCTION 1.1 Introduction People and things are given names for identification purposes. A name is a title given to a person or a thing. A name is defined by Sebashe (2003:12) as a word or words by which a person, animal, place or a thing is spoken of or referred to. In other words, a name distinguishes a particular thing from others. Names have political, social, economic and religious significance. As far as this study is concerned, the emphasis would be on the political significance of a name. The Black South Africans suffered a significant harm during the apartheid regime. The Europeans dominated in everything which resulted in Blacks losing their identity, culture, values, heritage an tradition. The European domination interfered with the naming patterns of the indigenous people of South Africa. Names of places were virtually Eurocentric. This is evident in town names, for example, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Pietersburg and Potgietersrus. Tables turned when a democratic government was elected in 1994. The affected people started to realize the negative impact of apartheid on numerous things, places names inclusive. The new government started to implement political changes. Some place names are changed to strike a balance between races, new places are named according to what the people want. Place naming starts to shift a distance away from Eurocentric to African names. Towns, streets, sporting facilities, names of settlements, businesses and 2 educational institutions are the most places affected by name changes and new naming patterns. 1.2 Background to the problem The problem of place naming in Africa in general and South Africa in particular started during the colonial period when many European countries scrambled for Africa in the 17th century.

    Amblysomus robustus – Robust Golden Mole continuing decline and possible severe fragmentation of habitat. Currently known from only five locations but probably more widespread. Further field surveys and molecular data are needed to accurately delimit its range. The Highveld grasslands favoured by this species are being degraded by mining for shallow coal deposits to fuel numerous power stations that occur in the preferred high-altitude grassland habitats of this species, which is an inferred major threat. Rehabilitation attempts at these sites appear to have been largely ineffective. These power stations form the backbone of South Africa's electricity network, and disturbance is likely to increase as human populations grow and the demand for power increases. While no mining sites and power generation plants occur at the five localities where this species has been collected, an environmental authorisation application to mine coal at a site near Belfast, close to where this species occurs, is Gary Bronner currently being assessed. Given the ubiquity of mines and power stations in the Mpumalanga grasslands, impacts on this species are likely if it is more widespread than current Regional Red List status (2016) Vulnerable B1ab(iii)* records indicate, which seems probable. It has not been submitted before for any degree or examination in any other University. __I_It __ ·daYOf A~V\.-~t 19 't1-- 111 ABSTRACT The Sterkspruit Intrusion, in the south-western portion of the Barberton greenstone belt, is a sill-like body containing rocks of gabbroic to dioritic composition. It is hosted by a sequence of komatiitic basalts and komatiites of the Lower Onverwacht Group. The intrusion is considered unique in this area in that it lacks ultramafic components and has no affinities with the surrounding mafic- to- ultramafic lavas. The gabbroic suite also contains an unusual abundance of quartz, and the chill margin shows an evolved quartz-normative, tholeiitic parental magma. Based on petrographic and geochemical evidence, the intrusion can be subdivided into four gabbroic zones and a quartz diorite, which is an end product of a differentiating magma. The chill margin records an MgO content of 4.8%, an Mg# of 42, an Si02 value of 52.5% and a normative plagioclase composition of An 44. The sill-like nature of the body, indicated by geochemical trends, and the steep sub-vertical layering, point to a body that has been tilted along with the surrounding lavas.

    Section B: DistrictProfile MpumalangaHealth Profiles Province 13 Mpumalanga Province Gert Sibande District Municipality (DC30) Overview of the district The Gert Sibande District Municipalitya is a Category C municipality located in the Mpumalanga Province. It is bordered by the Ehlanzeni and Nkangala District Municipalities to the north, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State to the south, Swaziland to the east, and Gauteng to the west. The district is the largest of the three districts in the province, making up almost half of its geographical area. It is comprised of seven local municipalities: Govan Mbeki, Chief Albert Luthuli, Msukaligwa, Dipaleseng, Mkhondo, Lekwa and Pixley Ka Seme. Highways that pass through Gert Sibande District Municipality include the N11, which goes through to the N2 in KwaZulu-Natal, the N17 from Gauteng passing through to Swaziland, and the N3 from Gauteng to KwaZulu-Natal. Many innocent Boer and African families were sent to these camps where they died of diseases, such as, poor conditions and lack of shelters. Boer families were sent to concentration camps in Heidelberg. Africans, on the other hand, were sent to the concentration camp in Greylingstad. A possible location for the African concentration camp in Greylingstad is Bakkiesfontein 568 IR. Unfortunately, there is nothing to show where this camp is as a fire destroyed many of the records. Bakkiesfontein 568 IR was chosen as a possible location for the African concentration camp in Greylingstad because of the old house, stream, stone walls, railway, SR fort and the African cemetery. Bakkiesfontein was surveyed by foot. The aim was to find the location of the concentration camp. Areas where pedestrian surveys were conducted included the house, barn, possible midden, graves, stone walls and stone circle. The pedestrian survey showed that Iron Age communities also lived on the farm. Three test-pits were also conducted. Areas where the test-pits were conducted included the midden, between stone walls and on a slope near a stone wall. The test-pits were not that successful. The artefacts found during the test- pits and surveys include; metal, ceramic pieces and pottery, glass pieces and even plastic.
