STATEMENTS SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA “To be the state and national leader in providing quality sporting opportunities in the school environment for all school age children in Victoria.” SCHOOL SPORT AUSTRALIA “To co-ordinate and administer appropriate quality sporting opportunities for all students in Australian schools by facilitating, supporting and leading the States and Territories in their development of sports education.” SSV Team Officials Manual 2017-18 3 GENERAL INFORMATION Each year, talented Victorian school students have the opportunity to trial for a place in the School Sport Victoria (SSV) Team Vic state team and participate in annual School Sport Australia (SSA) Championships including the Pacific School Games (PSG) held every second year. In 2017, fifty teams will be selected across twenty one sports, involving over one thousand primary and secondary school students representing 'Team Vic'. The sports include Australian Football, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Diving, Football (Soccer), Goalball (Pacific Schools Games (PSG) only), Golf, Hockey, Netball, Orienteering, Rugby League, Softball, Surfing, Swimming, Tennis, Touch, Track and Field, Triathlon and Volleyball. The SSA Championships offer gifted and talented students the opportunity to participate in higher levels of sporting competition against students from other Australian states and territories. You can view further trial information regarding the nomination process for each sport re. dates, times, venue, age eligibility, nomination closing dates, trial fees and Championship venue and dates - by clicking on the respective links under the Team Vic tab - http://www.ssv.vic.edu.au/team-vic on the SSV website – www.ssv.vic.edu.au Please note that participation in SSV Team Vic state teams is self-funded, so students will be required to contribute to the costs of being a member of a team. Costs include host state and administration levies, uniform, flights, transport, accommodation and meals. SSV makes every effort to keep all costs to a minimum and tries to assist team members through contact with schools, sponsor letter and a media release. SSV also conducts a State Teams raffle to assist with meeting the costs of participation, plus students can also apply for grants from the Australian Sports Commission Local Sporting Champions Program or nominate for an opportunity to obtain funding from the Sports Excellence Scholarship Fund. To be eligible for selection, students must be in regular attendance as a fulltime student at a School Sport Victoria member school; available to attend selection trials and training sessions; and meet the costs of participation. Students registering for trials are indicating that they will be available for trials. Team training schedules will be available at the trials and team training which is generally held on weekends or during school holidays. S-Trend is the SSV Team Vic teams’ uniform provider. All players and officials will need to order compulsory garments and competition garments for their sport as required. The wearing of old / previous Team Vic (ie. BLK ) garments will not be permitted. More information will be provided at your induction. SSV Team Officials Manual 2017-18 4 ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES On behalf of the President & the Board of School Sport Victoria (SSV), congratulations on your appointment as a SSV Team Vic State Team Official for 2017 and 2018. The role of the Team Official is incredibly rewarding and a great development opportunity for you, your fellow Team Officials and the students in your care. The Team Official’s role starts from the moment you are appointed and continues until the end of your appointment period, with the Championships being the celebration of all of your efforts. At the conclusion of the Championship, you will be very satisfied with the work you have done and the progress of your team members. The following guidelines will assist you in understanding what to expect in your respective role as a Team Official with School Sport Victoria. TEAM OFFICIALS’ JOINT RESPONSIBILITIES All team officials are responsible for the following: 1. ‘Duty of Care’ of students during trials, training sessions and the Championships 2. Ensuring their own behavior reflects that of a representative of the Department of Education and Training showing courtesy and consideration to others at all times – to be a role-model for students and parents. 3. Being aware of School Sport Victoria and School Sport Australia policies 4. The behavior and conduct of the team members at

Matt works closely with the swim programs and Performance Psychology Team who facilitate wellbeing programs for Years 6, 8 and 10 students.     Origins of Hockey in Sydney, and of our Club A 2013 Perspective Sydney University Hockey Club is proud to be the oldest surviving hockey club in NSW and the oldest university hockey club in Australia. We started in 1906 and are the only club (surviving or otherwise) that was involved in creating the first men’s and women’s hockey competitions in NSW Brett Radcliffe, Rowan Johnston and Anne Simmons October 2103. V1.0 Origins of Hockey in Sydney, and of Our Club Research by Sydney University Hockey Club archivist Brett Radcliffe and others has significantly changed our knowledge of our own history, and has shed new light on the history of hockey in Sydney, in New South Wales and even in Australia. Sydney University Hockey Club is proud to be the oldest surviving hockey club in NSW, the oldest university hockey club in Australia and probably the third oldest surviving club in Australia. We started in or before 1906 and are the only club (surviving or otherwise) that was involved in creating the first men’s and women’s hockey competitions in NSW. There are records of Sydney University’s men’s team playing in 1906 and our women in 1907. Early in 1906 our men’s team was strong enough to beat the previously invincible Navy team, which suggests they may have played before. If we started as early as 1905, we’d be equal oldest, but a 1906 start means (we think) third oldest. We do not yet have proof a team was playing in 1905: even our own team of 1906 is hard to trace.

Sports Expos Prior to 2001 girls’ sport was fragmented with multiple, smaller associations providing an overlapping, but limited Skills Development range of sports to the Independent Girls’ Schools. Since 2001 the 24 member schools have increased the GSV Office amount of sport in which their school participates. They are also more satisfied with the cohesive organisation, the wider variety of schools and greater diversity of talent against which 86 Anderson Street, South Yarra 3141 to compete.
