LANGUAGES AT FIRBANK Learning languages in addition to English extends students’ literacy and their capacity to communicate. It strengthens their understanding of the nature of language, culture and communication. All language study will develop students’ intercultural competency and develop new ways of seeing and being in the world. Students learn to communicate and interact to access and exchange information, to express feelings and opinions, to participate in imaginative and creative experiences. They work with a range of texts designed for language learning, online resources and authentic texts. Students also develop a deep understanding of how language works. All Year 7 students will participate in the Languages Breakfast. FRENCH Bonjour! Why learn French? French is spoken in many countries around the world and used in many international organisations. Australia and the French-speaking world have significant shared history and strong contemporary connections. Learning French will not only broaden students’ employment opportunities but will also enable them to communicate in a world of linguistic and cultural diversity. Their learning journey will take them through their own world and that of the French communities. They will explore several topics from family relationships, friendships, school life, travel and leisure activities to global and social issues. They will also participate in excursions and see French films during International Film Festivals. Exchange programs may also be facilitated so they can immerse themselves in the French language and culture. GERMAN Guten Tag! Why learn German? It is the most spoken native language in the European Union. Germany has the biggest economy in Europe. It is the nation with the largest outbound tourist trade in the world. German is a key language for science, music, literature and philosophy. Berlin is a hot spot for startups and innovation. There are many opportunities for employment, exchanges, scholarships and grants. German and English share many similar words and grammatical features so students can engage with authentic texts at an early stage. It is a largely phonetic language with many similar sounds as English. Nouns are capitalised which aids comprehension of written texts. In Years 7-12 girls will progress from topics related to their personal world at beginner level to quite sophisticated global and social issues at VCE level. We include topics about modern Germany including pop music, food and fairytales along the way. Students will have the opportunity to participate in excursions, see films and participate in cultural activities. In 2019 we had a very successful German Study Tour. Often, we host young assistants from Germany to provide support in oral activities. In 2020 we will be using a new, vibrant textbook at Year 7. https://cengage.com.au/secondary/ganz-klasse CHINESE Ni hao! Why learn Chinese? China is one of the world’s oldest and richest continuous cultures, over 5000 years old. It is the most populous nation in the world, with 1.28 billion people. One fifth of the planet speaks Chinese. Mandarin Chinese is the mother tongue of over 873 million people, making it the most widely spoken first language in the world. There are more people speaking Chinese than English. It’s the number one spoken language in the world. China is the second largest economy in the world. China is one of largest trading partners of the Australia. Many Australia companies do business in China and have long-term investments there. International businesses prefer to hire people who speak more than one language. China has become a huge market, and business leaders are looking for people who can speak Chinese and operate successfully in a Chinese cultural context. Chinese has a relatively uncomplicated grammar. Chinese has no verb conjugation (no need to memorize verb tenses!) and no noun declension (e.g., gender and number distinctions).
