Although Saturday games in the social league didn’t go to plan with 2 losses, Sunday proved to be the day. All games played were won with their "social” team Storm 1 (Wellington Yellow) placed 5th overall, and their Wellington Under 19’s had their first win in the NZ Series, against the Auckland men’s team 6-2. Previous NZ series games were played at the Christchurch Open held over the weekend of 25/26 March. Coby also participated in this where his "social” team (Wellington White) placed 4th overall, and the Wellington Under 19’s lost both their NZ series games to both Wellington men’s (7-0) and Christchurch men’s (14-2). Coby was awarded the "Best Defender" of the tournament. The next date to remember is the Wellington Open, which will be held on the weekend of 22-24 September, where the boys will play the last round of the NZ series and also, along with their club mates, play for the last time for the NZ Under 15 title.

The school leaders were very competitive especially today at morning break with last minute entries.

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT The homework for the year 9 and 10 students is done online. The students have the school login and password as well as their own. It is important that all students have a calculator for their first round of testing happening over the next few weeks. INTERNATIONAL HOMESTAYS REQUIRED Heretaunga College is looking for homestays for International students who have an interest in horses and horse riding.

Could this be your family?

International students enrol at our school as part of our equestrian programme. Students live locally with an English speaking homestay family with an interest in horses, and are supervised by a Homestay Co-ordinator. Students need access to a horse to ride either for pleasure or in competitions. Riding lessons at different levels of expertise are organised by the school.

Equestrian Programme The school is able to offer students with an interest in horse riding or equestrian activities, an exciting opportunity to continue their interest while studying in New Zealand. The Equestrian Programme is an addition to our regular High School Programme

Lara from Germany is a past student in this programme. This is what she has to say:

Lara Di Martino Hi, I live in Bremen, Germany and have come to study at Heretaunga College for six months. In Germany I have my own horses and ride most days during the week. In New Zealand the school has introduced me to people who own horses that I am able to ride. I ride two to three times a week which includes dressage and show jumping. One session is with a teacher. I will be participating in show jumping competitions when the season begins. I have enjoyed my stay in New Zealand so much that I wish I could extend my stay.

We have a lot of interest from International students wishing to study at Heretaunga College and are keen to extend our available homestay families.

If selected you can receive $235 per week homestay payment.

If you wish to know more about this please do not hesitate to contact the Homestay Manager Ms Nadine Te Pohe at [email protected]

Heretaunga College has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Ministry of Education. Copies are available from the school or www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international

ANZ OLYMPIC SCHOOLS PROGRAMME

Supporting Heretaunga College through the ANZ Olympic Schools Programme

ANZ has developed the ANZ Olympic Schools Programme with the New Zealand Olympic Committee to inspire and motivate New Zealand's youth, through the magic and celebration of the Olympic Games. The ANZ Olympic Schools Programme helps schools to give the next generation the confidence to strive to the best they can be: enriching their lives through the Olympic Values of Joy of Effort, Fair Play, Respect for Others, Pursuit of Excellence and Balance of Body, Mind and Character. The programme provides schools with great resources, certificates of achievement, and letters of encouragement from ANZ Olympic Ambassadors.

How you can help In addition to the great resources schools can receive, ANZ has also tailored the programme so the school community can help earn credits to spend at the ANZ Awards Centre and also secure the chance to have an Olympic Ambassador visit the school.

For anyone planning to take out a home loan with ANZ, make sure they let their banker know they support Heretaunga College.

For every home loan drawn down over $50,000 the school can earn credits to spend on items from the ANZ Awards Centre, items such as sports equipment or computers. As an example an eligible home loan drawn down by someone linked to your school to the value of $50k or more will entitle the school to 800 credits – that’s about $400 of spending power at the ANZ Awards centre.

Age Concern New Zealand have launched for Elder Abuse Awareness. Age Concern would love younger kiwis to get behind this campaign.

You could do a variety of things to show support and encourage more understanding about this hidden issue:

 wear purple day”  Include information in your newsletter  photo or essay competitions about connection to older family and friends (background paper attached)  encourage staff, families and students to sign up as an Age Concern Dignity Champion.

Elder Abuse Hits Close to Home Age Concern is raising awareness of elder abuse during Elder Abuse Awareness Week from 15-22 June 2017 which begins on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15 June 2017.

Something many people find shocking is that elder abuse often happens within families. Many older people feel ashamed their own flesh and blood are treating them badly and this shame or stigma means people don't always report abuse. This is one of the reasons it stays hidden. It’s not ok - Age Concern New Zealand needs help stopping elder abuse in our communities. We need your support to speak up and make sure we all play a part protecting our older Kiwis.

Unfortunately Age Concern elder abuse statistics show that: 75% of alleged abusers are family members 50% of the alleged abusers are adult children or grandchildren 50/50 - alleged abusers are as likely to be female as male

Please seek help if you suspect any abuse is happening - www.ageconcern.org.nz.
