THATS 7 SERIES (20 books) FOR 14$! THAT'S ONE HELL OF A LABOR DAY DEAL! Grab the before its too late! A bite (and byte) sized take on Photo London. Is photography the most democratic medium? While oil painting, sculpture, and even poetry require a certain amount of education, training and investment, photography – once a refined, gentlemanly pastime – can be practiced fairly easily by any one of the world’s 2.5 billion smartphone users. This wide geographical spread is reflected in Photo London, Britain’s leading photography fair, which opens tomorrow at Somerset House in the British capital, with compelling works representing every continent and every period, from Fox Talbot onwards, including some new pieces created by artificial intelligence. The artist, technologist and Phaidon author Trevor Paglen made his Adversarially Evolved Hallucinations images by training an artificial intelligence programme to recognize certain types of images, such as omens, monsters, and dreams. He then used another AI application to create a new series of eerie, beautiful images, based on the first AI app’s findings. Confused? Then allow Paglen to explain his work and outlook in the fair’s Talks Auditorium, on Thursday 17 May, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm. The street photography pioneer and Phaidon author Joel Meyerowitz also puts in an appearance at the Talks Auditorium on 19 May, 2:15 pm - 3:15 pm discussing a more comprehensible technical development. Entitled Why Colour?, Joel’s talk will cover his early adoption of full-colour photography – shooting on colour film at time when most fine-art photographers were using back and white stock. For more great 20th century colour work, take a look at the Soviet pioneer Boris Mikhailov, whose sexually charged, subversive colour work from the 1960s and 70s is on show at Sprovieri gallery’s stand, alongside more recent photo montages by that great chronicler of New York life Nan Goldin. Roger Ballen’s brilliantly eerie Boarding House and Outland images are a big draw at Spanish gallery Camara Oscura’s booth. The late French fashion photographer Guy Bourdin is represented at Louise Alexander Gallery, which is displaying a rare collection of Bourdin’s Polaroids. The Japanese monochrome master Daido Moriyama has his work on show at not one but three different booths. Look out for his pictures at Akio Nagasawa Gallery, Hamiltons and IBASHO; IBASHO also have works by the fellow Japanese master Nobuyoshi Araki. And anyone intrigued by the interaction between fine photography and architecture should take in Large Glass’s booth, which has Hélène Binet’s photographs on display. Best known for her architectural photography, Binet also shot Zaha Hadid’s Meshworks art installation, a series of nylon- coated wire strands, installed in Rome back in 2000. Through the perennial magic of photography, Binet’s photos capture the spectacle perfectly. Trevor Paglen Julia Bryan-Wilson, Lauren Cornell, Omar Kholeif. The first complete monograph on an artist whose work investigates surveillance and government secrecy in the digital age. Trevor Paglen's art gives visual geography to hidden forces, relentlessly pursuing what he calls the 'unseeable and undocumentable' in contemporary society. Blending photography, installation, investigative journalism, and science, Paglen explores the clandestine activity of government and intelligence agencies, using high-grade equipment to document their movements and reveal their hidden inner workings. This book presents over three decades of Paglen's groundbreaking work, making visible the structures and technologies that impact our lives. Omar Kholeif is an artist, curator, writer, and editor currently working as Manilow senior curator and director of global initiatives at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. "[Paglen's] diverse body of work highlights the clandestine activity of the state and intelligence agencies. A multidisciplinary approach defines his practice, comprising photography, installation, journalism and science. Emphasising the extensive reach of global information and data networks. As a whole, the pieces offer dialogues about the nature of public and private spheres in the 21st century. The book offers readers insight into the socio-political structures that define the everyday experience, establishing its importance to a broad spectrum of audiences."— Aesthetica. "As the latest subject of Phaidon's ever-expanding series of artist monographs, Trevor Paglen occupies a particularly political space. Paglen's subject matter is usually unseen only because there is someone out there who doesn't want it to be. An interview with Lauren Cornell maps out Paglen's rather unusual career trajectory. These experiences provide some background explanation of the subtle complexity of Paglen's photography. For Paglen, it is not simply enough to expose how these powers permeate society; one must also show a way to circumvent them."— Source (Northern Ireland) Holiday Across the Pond. On July 28, 2013, Michael and Amanda Szapkiw took Lars and Elisabeth (Elliot) Gren to Logan Airport, in Boston, MA for their flight to London. Having been impacted by Mrs. Elliot Gren’s writing and speaking, the Szapkiws were delighted to help the Grens on the first leg of their journey. They had traveled to the United Kingdom multiple times on speaking engagements over a span of close to thirty years, however this time was different than most. This time Lars and Elisabeth (Elliot) Gren came to the UK on holiday. For close to three weeks, from the end of July through mid August, 2013, they explored the Welsh countryside and briefly visited parts of England and Scotland. The majority of their time was spent with Steve and Stella Price. Steve was the Gren’s family physician and friend for many years in Boston, MA. Now living in Wales, the Prices graciously hosted Lars and Elisabeth in their home. Dr. Price has a rich knowledge of Welsh history, which made him an excellent tour guide. Soon after arriving in the UK, Lars set off to tour the Big Pit coal mine, which is now a prize winning National Coal Museum located in Blaenavon, Torfaen, South Wales. After being lowered 300 feet down a mineshaft, he was guided through the same tunnels hundreds of miners had walked in years gone by. The coal mine was one of Mr. Gren’s favorite places to visit, “Not necessarily because of the beauty” says Lars, “but just the thought of those miners who began by lying on their sides digging coal out with a pick.” Countless miles were covered by car and train to cities and towns all across the United Kingdom, but a favorite site was Bath, England. Not only is the city full of history, it also attracts many artists. Musicians performed in shifts, making for an almost non-stop program of live music. As their holiday drew to a close, Lars and Elisabeth traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland to spend time with Elisabeth’s granddaughter and a couple of her children. Lars climbed the 287 steps to the top of the Scott Monument with his step-great-granddaughter, Valerie, while Elisabeth enjoyed spending time with her namesake granddaughter. While Elisabeth no longer goes on speaking tours, her life and work continues to ignite the hearts of hundreds. Her books and recordings still encourage men and women around the world to seek God more fervently and to carry the gospel to the far reaches of the globe. Countless times complete strangers would hold the hand of their heroine and tell her how her life and books had impacted their lives. Thousands of miles were covered by plane, train and automobile. Old friends were reunited and new acquaintances made. Everything from castles, markets, and chapels were explored side by side. And while this journey had ended, more are most certainly on the horizon. One of the first places Lars explored was the Big Pit coal mine in Blaenavon, Torfaen, South Wales. After descending 300ft. into the belly of the earth, he toured the underground tunnels and learned about mining from a former miner. For the majority of their trip, Mr. and Mrs. Gren stayed with Steve and Stella Price, old friends from Boston, MA. The Prices are the care takers of the Hanover Chapel located in Llanover, Wales. This chapel was pastored by Robert Jermain Thomas, in the 1800s, who was martyred while bringing the gospel to Korea. Hundreds of Koreans now come each year to the chapel to show respect for the Welshman who helped to bring the gospel to Korea. The visiting Koreans were also inspired to hear Lars tell the story of Jim Elliot, Elisabeth’s first husband, who was martyred while bringing the gospel to the Auca Indians in Ecuador. Over the years of traveling the Grens have made many friends in the UK. One such friend is Daphne Beaker. Everyone enjoyed the couple days spent together and the time to reminisce on the past and catch up on current events. In the nearly three weeks spent in the UK from the end of July to the mid part of August, 2013, Lars and Elisabeth journeyed throughout the Welsh country side and parts of England, visiting historical sites. Steve and Stella Price where superb personal tour guides, not only knowing the best places to visit, but also the rich history behind so many of the sights. A guitarist plays English and Celtic folk songs in the historic square in Bath, England. Out of all the places that were visited, Bath was one of Lars’ favorites. As a proud Norwegian, Mr. Gren enjoyed a cup of coffee with Steve Price at The Norsk Coffee Shop. While a coffee shop now, it was previously a Norwegian church for the sailors who came through Cardiff Bay. Towards the end of their visit to the UK, the Grens journeyed by train to Edinburgh, Scotland to spend time with their granddaughter and a couple of her children. With Lars leading the way, he and his step-great- granddaughter, Valerie Martin, climbed the 287 steps to the top of the Scott Monument together. From the top of the Scott Monument you could see much of Edinburgh as well as thousands of people who had congregated for the Edinburgh International Festival. The festival was created in 1947 to provide a platform for the performing arts. Mrs. Gren and her namesake granddaughter, Elisabeth Martin, are normally separated by thousands of miles not to mention an ocean. Because of that, their time together was very special and memorable. Imagin. Gloria Price. Gloria worked at a dry cleaning establishment in Spain with her partner Cliff Pughes, but fled to England after she accidentally burned it down. She turned up on where Stella and Eva lived, telling them that she was lying low after getting into trouble with gangsters. Upon arriving, Gloria immediately began interfering into Stella's life, attempting to reconcile Stella and her ex-boyfriend Karl Munro after hearing they had split up. Gloria tried to take charge of the Rovers, throwing the hotpot out and offering Karl a shift at the . She was kicked out by Stella when she found out and asked Leanne and Nick Tilsley to put her up instead. However, Gloria then began to interfere with Nick's Bistro. Cliff turned up but Gloria quickly sent him packing, although Nick's mother Gail McIntyre talked to Cliff and found DQ out that Gloria's stories of living it up in Spain were fantasies, but agreed to keep it a secret if she moved back into the Rovers. Gail then helped Gloria to build bridges with Stella. Gloria convinced Stella to enter the Rovers into the Lancashire Leisure magazine's "Pub of the Year" competition, but named herself as landlady in the competition instead of Stella. She put up a comments box and encouraged customers to leave feedback, but instead re-wrote the comment cards herself, and barred Norris Cole after finding a note from him saying she was vulgar and loud, although Stella later unbarred him. Gloria also turned the pub into a B&B for a night to impress one of the judges for the competition, much to Stella's annoyance. Gloria became embroiled in a scheme of Gail's to expose Lewis Archer as a con man, and prove this to . She pretended to Lewis that she was terminally ill and looked to him for support. Gloria proposed to Lewis that they run away together with £10,000, but Lewis declined saying that he loved Audrey. When Lewis found out about the scheme, he ended his relationship with Audrey because she knew about it, and planned revenge on Gloria and Gail. When the Rovers had won the "Pub of the Year" competition, Gloria arranged a presentation at the pub that evening, but Lewis got his revenge by exposing that Gloria had rigged the comments box. Stella kicked her out once more, angry that her mother had humiliated her and risked the reputation of her business. It was mentioned in November 2012 that Gloria had left England and travelled to Istanbul, where she was working with a man selling carpets on the Grand Bazaar. In February 2013, Gloria returned to with her new fiancé Eric Babbage - a carpet salesman, much to Stella's dismay. After she returned, Gloria decided that it was time for a family get together, so she organised a dinner at Nick's Bistro. She then started a row with Leanne's ex-husband Peter, telling him to stay away from her family. Eric started to see Gloria's true colours and realised that he didn't want to marry her. He later confessed this to Eva, asking her to go away with him on a trip round the world. Eric later died shortly afterwards, and both Gloria and Eva were horrified by this. Later on, Eric's solicitor arrived with Eric's wife, Doris. She told Gloria, Stella and Eva all about their marriage. She confessed to Gloria that she was after his money, and that he had left all his money and belongings to her, not Gloria. Gloria was left astounded and upset by this. After Doris and Eric's solicitor had left, Eva told Gloria all about her and Eric's little plan of going around the world. Both Stella and Eva thought that Gloria was after his money, but Gloria confessed that she wasn't and that she was truly in love with him. Gradually, both Stella and Eva made up with her and told her that they wanted her to remain in Weatherfield. In May 2013, Gloria found out that she was left £80,000 in Eric's will. She put the money towards getting the Rovers repaired after it was burned down in March. However in September, the Prices moved out into 13 Coronation Street when Stella decided to sell up after Karl was revealed to be the arsonist responsible for the Rovers' fire, and to have killed Stella's friend Sunita Alahan. Gloria began to work in Nick's Bistro along with Stella, especially when Nick was suffering brain damage after a car accident. Gloria leaves with . In February 2014 Gloria decided to leave Weatherfield and go travelling, and invited Dennis Tanner to come along with her, despite knowing he was married to Rita Tanner. Although Dennis was originally not up for it, he decided to depart with Gloria as he liked the thought of adventure and excitement. Gloria drove off in a Jaguar E-Type with Dennis in tow, as a devastated Rita looked on and they boarded a ferry that night. However the union didn't last long. Feeling Gloria was too controlling, Dennis used the money he had to get a plane back to the United Kingdom two months later. Gloria later settled down in France, and Eva went to stay with her in February 2015 after she separated from her boyfriend . In June Leanne and Simon went to visit Gloria for a short break to cope with the death of Kal Nazir after he perished during the Victoria Court fire. In June 2017, Eva told Aidan that Gloria had moved to Morocco to sell carpets; leaving her daughter Stella in France after a recent break up. Eva went out for a two week holiday to support her mother.
