THATS 7 SERIES (20 books) FOR 14$! THAT'S ONE HELL OF A LABOR DAY DEAL! Grab the before its too late! A bite (and byte) sized take on Photo London. Is photography the most democratic medium? While oil painting, sculpture, and even poetry require a certain amount of education, training and investment, photography – once a refined, gentlemanly pastime – can be practiced fairly easily by any one of the world’s 2.5 billion smartphone users. This wide geographical spread is reflected in Photo London, Britain’s leading photography fair, which opens tomorrow at Somerset House in the British capital, with compelling works representing every continent and every period, from Fox Talbot onwards, including some new pieces created by artificial intelligence. The artist, technologist and Phaidon author Trevor Paglen made his Adversarially Evolved Hallucinations images by training an artificial intelligence programme to recognize certain types of images, such as omens, monsters, and dreams. He then used another AI application to create a new series of eerie, beautiful images, based on the first AI app’s findings. Confused? Then allow Paglen to explain his work and outlook in the fair’s Talks Auditorium, on Thursday 17 May, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm. The street photography pioneer and Phaidon author Joel Meyerowitz also puts in an appearance at the Talks Auditorium on 19 May, 2:15 pm - 3:15 pm discussing a more comprehensible technical development. Entitled Why Colour?, Joel’s talk will cover his early adoption of full-colour photography – shooting on colour film at time when most fine-art photographers were using back and white stock. For more great 20th century colour work, take a look at the Soviet pioneer Boris Mikhailov, whose sexually charged, subversive colour work from the 1960s and 70s is on show at Sprovieri gallery’s stand, alongside more recent photo montages by that great chronicler of New York life Nan Goldin. Roger Ballen’s brilliantly eerie Boarding House and Outland images are a big draw at Spanish gallery Camara Oscura’s booth. The late French fashion photographer Guy Bourdin is represented at Louise Alexander Gallery, which is displaying a rare collection of Bourdin’s Polaroids. The Japanese monochrome master Daido Moriyama has his work on show at not one but three different booths. Look out for his pictures at Akio Nagasawa Gallery, Hamiltons and IBASHO; IBASHO also have works by the fellow Japanese master Nobuyoshi Araki. And anyone intrigued by the interaction between fine photography and architecture should take in Large Glass’s booth, which has Hélène Binet’s photographs on display. Best known for her architectural photography, Binet also shot Zaha Hadid’s Meshworks art installation, a series of nylon- coated wire strands, installed in Rome back in 2000. Through the perennial magic of photography, Binet’s photos capture the spectacle perfectly. Trevor Paglen Julia Bryan-Wilson, Lauren Cornell, Omar Kholeif. The first complete monograph on an artist whose work investigates surveillance and government secrecy in the digital age. Trevor Paglen's art gives visual geography to hidden forces, relentlessly pursuing what he calls the 'unseeable and undocumentable' in contemporary society. Blending photography, installation, investigative journalism, and science, Paglen explores the clandestine activity of government and intelligence agencies, using high-grade equipment to document their movements and reveal their hidden inner workings. This book presents over three decades of Paglen's groundbreaking work, making visible the structures and technologies that impact our lives. Specifications: Format: Paperback Size: 290 x 250 mm (11 3/8 x 9 7/8 in) Pages: 160 pp Illustrations: 200 illustrations ISBN: 9780714873442. Lauren Cornell is director of the graduate program and chief curator at the Hessel Museum of Art at CCS Bard, New York. Julia Bryan-Wilson is professor in the Department of History of Art at the University of California, Berkeley. Omar Kholeif is an artist, curator, writer, and editor currently working as Manilow senior curator and director of global initiatives at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. "[Paglen's] diverse body of work highlights the clandestine activity of the state and intelligence agencies. A multidisciplinary approach defines his practice, comprising photography, installation, journalism and science. Emphasising the extensive reach of global information and data networks. As a whole, the pieces offer dialogues about the nature of public and private spheres in the 21st century. The book offers readers insight into the socio-political structures that define the everyday experience, establishing its importance to a broad spectrum of audiences."— Aesthetica. "As the latest subject of Phaidon's ever-expanding series of artist monographs, Trevor Paglen occupies a particularly political space. Paglen's subject matter is usually unseen only because there is someone out there who doesn't want it to be. An interview with Lauren Cornell maps out Paglen's rather unusual career trajectory. These experiences provide some background explanation of the subtle complexity of Paglen's photography. For Paglen, it is not simply enough to expose how these powers permeate society; one must also show a way to circumvent them."— Source (Northern Ireland) Holiday Across the Pond. On July 28, 2013, Michael and Amanda Szapkiw took Lars and Elisabeth (Elliot) Gren to Logan Airport, in Boston, MA for their flight to London. Having been impacted by Mrs. Elliot Gren’s writing and speaking, the Szapkiws were delighted to help the Grens on the first leg of their journey. They had traveled to the United Kingdom multiple times on speaking engagements over a span of close to thirty years, however this time was different than most. This time Lars and Elisabeth (Elliot) Gren came to the UK on holiday. For close to three weeks, from the end of July through mid August, 2013, they explored the Welsh countryside and briefly visited parts of England and Scotland. The majority of their time was spent with Steve and Stella Price. Steve was the Gren’s family physician and friend for many years in Boston, MA. Now living in Wales, the Prices graciously hosted Lars and Elisabeth in their home. Dr. Price has a rich knowledge of Welsh history, which made him an excellent tour guide. Soon after arriving in the UK, Lars set off to tour the Big Pit coal mine, which is now a prize winning National Coal Museum located in Blaenavon, Torfaen, South Wales. After being lowered 300 feet down a mineshaft, he was guided through the same tunnels hundreds of miners had walked in years gone by. The coal mine was one of Mr. Gren’s favorite places to visit, “Not necessarily because of the beauty” says Lars, “but just the thought of those miners who began by lying on their sides digging coal out with a pick.” Countless miles were covered by car and train to cities and towns all across the United Kingdom, but a favorite site was Bath, England. Not only is the city full of history, it also attracts many artists. Musicians performed in shifts, making for an almost non-stop program of live music.
