A Croácia e sua participação no Eurovisão: do apelo pacifista ao reconhecimento cultural de uma tradição Mauro Neves Resumo: A Croácia, juntamente com a Bósnia-Herzegovina e a Eslovênia, foi um dos primeiros países balcânicos a participar do Festival Eurovisão da Canção (Eurovisão) após a desintegração da Iugoslávia, país este que havia sido o único país do leste europeu a ter tomado parte no certame musical europeu até 1992. A entrada no Eurovisão em 1993 dessas três novas nações balcânicas, oriundas da desintegração iugoslava iniciada em 1991, deu-se em meio à Guerra da Bósnia (1992-1995), e por isso mesmo, representou a introdução de um novo imaginário dos Balcãs dentro desse programa musical de grande audiência e de longa história, de certa maneira procurando aproximar os países nascidos dessa desintegração à comunidade europeia. Após uma breve síntese histórica do Eurovisão como um todo e das participações da Iugoslávia, 27 participações entre 1961 e 1992, passaremos a analisar as 21 participações da Croácia entre 1993 e 2013, discutindo o que estas representaram não só como forma de procurar integrar o país na Europa, como também como forma de tentar criar um novo imaginário sobre o país para os próprios croatas. The African Roots of Cuban Music By Boima Tucker British sociologist Paul Gilroy suggested the history of culture in the Atlantic world is characterized by constant exchange. One of the most traceable elements of that exchange, is the musical connections between communities of African descent on either side of the ocean. These musical practices operate as sites of resistance, cultural retention, and social cohesion that allow us to understand some of the ways we all are formed by trans-continental processes. During the dawn of recorded music in the early part of the 20th century, Cuba—one of many New World sites of African and indigenous resistance to European colonisation and enslavement—would become a hotbed for musical export in the emerging industrialized system of music distribution. Folk musical traditions from across the island would come together in Havana’s studios, and then get dispersed around the entire Atlantic world. In the early part of the 20th Century, Cuban musical styles like son, mambo and guaguanco followed migrants and sailors out across the Atlantic, hitting radio waves in the ports of landing, and spreading throughout the interior of the countries they landed in. With its strong traces of West and Central African rhythms, this music would find legions of devoted followers on the African continent. Local artists would try their hand at recreating the sound, and start to mix elements of their own local traditions creating what we now know as Congolese rumba, soukous, mbalax, semba, kizomba, and highlife, etc. These styles, amongst many others on the continent, would go on to form the backbone of national identity in the post-independence period, their propagation supported with enthusiasm by the leaders of the new nations. -

FOR THE HOMELAND: TRANSNATIONAL DIASPORIC NATIONALISM AND THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST SLAVIŠA MIJATOVIĆ A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GEOGRAPHY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, CANADA December 2014 © Slaviša Mijatović, 2014 Abstract This project examines the extent to which the Eurovision Song Contest can effectively perpetuate discourses of national identity and belonging for diasporic communities. This is done through a detailed performance analysis of former Yugoslav countries’ participations in the contest, along with in-depth interviews with diasporic people from the former Yugoslavia in Malmö, Sweden. The analysis of national symbolism in the performances shows how national representations can be useful for the promotion of the state in a reputational sense, while engaging a short-term sense of national pride and nationalism for the audiences. More importantly, the interviews with the former Yugoslav diaspora affirm Eurovision’s capacity for the long-term promotion of the ‘idea of Europe’ and European diversities as an asset, in spite of the history of conflict within the Yugoslav communities. This makes the contest especially relevant in a time of rising right-wing ideologies based on nationalism, xenophobia and racism. U radu su analizirani tekstovi pjesama popularne glazbe u Hrvatskoj na nacionalnoj i regionalnoj razini te se samim time on može podijeliti na dva dijela. U prvom dijelu razmatra se hrvatski nacionalni identitet, koji se u popularnoj glazbi u većoj mjeri iskazivao u razdoblju Domoviskog rata, kada je došlo do pojačanih osjećaja domoljublja i potrebe da se kroz glazbu podiže moral i ohrabruje civilno stanovništvo i hrvatske branitelje, a ostavština rata prisutna je i nakon njegovog završetka.
