Remembering & October 6–13, 2018 With Jack Herney, Instructor of History, Emeritus Dear Members of the Exeter Family,

World War I began in June of 1914 with an assassin’s bullet, and ended four years later with more than ten million soldiers lost and three royal houses in ruins. Emeritus History Instructor Jack Herney '46, '69, '71, '74, '92, '95 (Hon.) is an expert on this earth-shattering conflict, which is still referred to in Europe as “the Great War.” Glasgow DENMARK Edinburgh In October 2018, join Jack and fellow members of the Exeter family on a World War I-themed journey through Belgium and France. From Paris, travel to Meaux to discover the impressive Museum of the Great War before continuing to the battlefield sites of Château-Thierry and Belleau Wood. In Reims, the heart of the French Champagne region, see the city’s magnificent Gothic cathedral. Spend Derry a day visiting the war museum and cemeteries of , where over 300,000 soldiers died. We will also see nearby battlefields and cemeteries, and witness the deeply Dublin moving , a nightly bugle tribute to those who died in the Great War. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9: VERDUN, FRANCE This morning begins with a visit to the extraordinary Gothic Cathedral of Reims. Then we drive to Verdun, the site of some of the fiercest battles of the Great War. See the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and memorial, the largest American military cemetery in Europe, and the Montfaucon Monument. After lunch in Verdun, visit the , the national cemetery. The vaults of the ossuary alone contain the remains of 130,000 unidentified French and German soldiers who perished on the battlefield during the “Hell of Verdun.” Continue to the nearby site of Fleury-devant-Douaumont. The town ruins serve as a testament to the villages that “died for France.” Return to Reims for a social hour and recap of the day’s events. B,L

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10: YPRES, BELGIUM Travel to Ypres to tour the In Flanders Fields Museum, housed in the famous Cloth Hall and highlighting the personal stories of ordinary local citizens during World Smiling angel, Reims Cathedral War I.
