March/April 2021 Newsletter COUPEVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WOLF PUP NEWS M A R C H / A P R I L 2 0 2 1 N E W S L E T T E R | V O L . 3 MORE INSIDE THIS NEWSLETTER Counselor's Corner - 2 Student Illness Protocol - 8 GREETINGS FROM MR. EBERSOLE Hello, Coupeville Elementary School Families! We are off to a M A R C H 1 4 great start with our hybrid, in-person learning and I want to thank each and every one of our families for your commitment to your student’s education during this pandemic. I know it has not been easy for any of us, but your patience, perseverance, and partnership with us has been inspiring. Thank you. As we continue in the hybrid, in-person model, it will be important that we continue to be vigilant about our mitigation efforts, such as wearing a mask, social distancing, and washing and sanitizing our hands frequently. Another key is to keep your student home when they are feeling under the weather. IC: WGME.COM Please be sure to read the Student Illness Protocol article on page 8 for an explanation of what needs to happen when your DAYLIGHT student is absent from school and familiarize yourself with SAVING TIME COVID-19 symptoms, if you haven’t already. Together we can BEGINS AT keep our staff, students, and community safe. Thanks again. 2:00 AM Sincerely, Dave Ebersole, CES Principal P A G E 0 1 COUNSELOR'S CORNER Ms. Dana Stone, School Counselor Purposeful People Lessons continue with many classes at CES. In January we talked about PERSEVERANCE and in February we began talking about EMPATHY. We will be wrapping up our lessons on Empathy in mid-March and continue with HONESTY and then COURAGE later in April. Each lesson ends with a story. I’ve found some really great books to illustrate Perseverance like The Thing Lou Couldn’t Do by Ashley Spires and How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers. For Empathy lessons, I read Stand in My Shoes by Bob Sornson and The Sandal Artist by Kathleen Pelley. Most of these books are available at our local public library if you want to check them out yourselves. The definition we are using for HONESTY is “living truthfully in your words, actions and thoughts”. Some conversation starters to try at home include: 1. When is it most difficult for you to tell the truth? 2. How important is it to you that your friends are honest? When your friends are dishonest, how does it make you feel? What should you do about it? The definition we are using for COURAGE is “to choose what is good, right and kind, even when it is hard or scary”. Two conversation starters to try at home are: 1. Talk with your child about what used to frighten you as a child. Be open about how you courageously worked to overcome that fear. Talk about who helped you or what strategy helped you along the way. 2. Talk about the things that frighten you as an adult today. Open up an honest conversation about how you work intentionally to show Courage often. Talking with our students about these character words is so fun. I am always amazed at how insightful students can be, even at six years old! You may be amazed at the conversations you will have using the above ideas, or some of your own starters. • Sheigra Dxpedition Report
Sheigra DXpedition Report 12 th to 25 th October 2019 - with Dave Kenny & Alan Pennington This was the 58th DXpedition to Sheigra in Sutherland on the far north western tip of the Scottish mainland, just south of Cape Wrath. DXers made the first long drive up here in 1979, so this we guess, was the 40 th anniversary? And the DXers who first made the trip to Sheigra in 1979 to listen to MW would probably notice little change here today: the single-track road ending in the same cluster of cottages, the cemetery besides the track towards the sea and, beyond that, the machair in front of Sheigra’s sandy bay. And surrounding Sheigra, the wild windswept hillsides, lochans and rocky cliffs pounded by the Atlantic. (You can read reports on our 18 most recent Sheigra DXpeditions on the BDXC website here: http://bdxc.org.uk/articles.html ) Below: Sheigra from the north: Arkle and Ben Stack the mountains on the horizon. Once again we made Murdo’s traditional crofter’s cottage our DX base. From here our long wire Beverage aerials can radiate out across the hillsides towards the sea and the Americas to the west and north west, and eastwards towards Asia, parallel to the old, and now very rough, peat track which continues on north east into the open moors after the tarmac road ends at Sheigra. right: Dave earths the Caribbean Beverage. We were fortunate to experience good MW conditions throughout our fortnight’s stay, thanks to very low solar activity. And on the last couple of days we were treated to some superb conditions with AM signals from the

  • Seattle a Digital Community Still in Transition Jessica Durkin, Tom Glaisyer, and Kara Hadge, Media Policy Initiative June 2010, Release 2.0
New America Foundation An Information Community Case Study: Seattle A digital community still in transition Jessica Durkin, Tom Glaisyer, and Kara Hadge, Media Policy Initiative June 2010, Release 2.0 Seattle, Washington, could be considered a city singularly suited to develop a healthy democracy in the digital age. The city government, citizens and business have created a productive environment for the next generation of information-sharing and community engagement. Years of economic growth and relative prosperity have fostered new, superior practices in news and information. Yet, losing a major print newspaper, as Seattle did when The Seattle Post-Intelligencer closed, adversely affects a community, by leaving it with one less place to provide public service journalism, stories about people and general community updates. In parallel, Seattle has been at the center of an explosion of alternative news outlets, especially online, which has created a critical mass of information portals for geographic and social communities. As the Knight Report, Informing Communities: Sustaining Democracy in a Digital Age, highlights, it is important to understand that there are three important elements to be considered as we analyze media and democracy in the 21st century: • availability of relevant and credible information to all Americans and their communities; • capacity of individuals to engage with information; and • individual engagement with information and the public life of the community. However, despite the relative vibrancy of the media scene, and even with all its demographic and other advantages, it is unclear how much of this innovation is sustainable. The local web is littered with websites that are no longer updated, and few of the startups boast anything like the journalistic firepower or profitability of the papers of the past.
